Chest x-ray resolution after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Aim To analyse the resolution of chest X-ray findings in relation to laboratory parameters in patients infected with acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a two- month followup. Effect of atorvastatin on systolic and diastolic function in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Aim To investigate the benefit of high-dose lipophilic statin therapy on cardiac remodelling, function and progression of heart failure (HF) in patients with ischemic heart disease. Methods A total of 80 patients with ischemic HF diagnosis were followed during 6 months, and they were divided in two groups. First group (n=40) was treated by high-dose lipophilic statin therapy (atorvastatin 40 mg) and conventional therapy for HF, while the second group (n=40) had no atorvastatin in the therapy.

Is preoperative hypoproteinemia associated with colorectal cancer stage and postoperative complications?

Aim To investigate the relationship between preoperative level of serum albumin in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), stage of CRC and postoperative complications. Methods This cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted at the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery of the University Clinical Centre Sarajevo (UCCS). A total of 107 patients surgically treated for CRC in the period between 2013 and 2018 were enrolled in this study and divided into two groups: with hypoalbuminemia (group A) and without hypoalbuminemia (group B).

The wish to allocate the funds to high-quali-ty research and to establish right criteria for scientific evaluation and academic career progression, make scientific criteria increasingly important to measure the quality of research and knowledge valorization. However, it is very difficult to apply the right criteria which can objectively assess scientific research.

Biomarker Potential of Preoperative Tumor Size in Determination of the Lymphovascular Invasion in Squamous Cell Lung Cancer and Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Introduction: The invasion of blood and lymph vessels with tumor tissue represents a negative prognostic factor of the disease course in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the marker value of a preoperatively determined size of pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma and its impact on lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in resected lung tissue.

Materials And Methods: The conducted observational cross-sectional study included 322 patients with a complete resection of confirmed squamous cell lung carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma.

Objective: The aim of this article was to enlist main principles of editing biomedical scientific journals adopted at annual meeting of Academy of Medical Sciences of Bosnia & Herzegovina (AMSB&H).

Methods: The evidence for writing this Guideline was systematically searched for during September 2020 in the PUBMED and GOOGLE SCHOLAR databases.

Effect of Therapeutic Hypothermia on Liver Enzymes in Patients With Stroke.

Introduction: A promising strategy that can lead to longer brain cell survival after an acute stroke is therapeutic hypothermia. It represents a controlled decrease in body temperature for therapeutic reasons. It is increasingly represented as a therapeutic option and is one of the most challenging treatments that improves neurological recovery and treatment outcome in patients with acute stroke.

Clinical use of an analysis of oxidative stress and IL-6 as the promoters of diabetic polyneuropathy.

Aim To investigate interleukin 6 (IL-6) values depending on duration of diabetes mellitus (DM) and evaluate possible correlation with diabetic polyneuropathy. Methods The research study included 90 patients with DM divided into three groups (30 patients each) according to the duration of DM: group A - patients who had DM for less than 10 years, group B - duration of DM was 10 to 20 years, and group C - patients with DM over 20 years. Control group (K) included 30 healthy participants.

Introduction: Many evidence indicates that Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) have strong reactivity with tumor cells and may serve as a useful marker in identifying patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).

Objectives: The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between preoperative concentration of serum levels of CEA and CA 19-9 and progression of colorectal cancer.

Methods: The retrospective study included 80 patients operated for colorectal cancer at the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery, Clinical Center of University of Sarajevo, from 2013 to 2018.

Appropriateness of colonoscopy at a tertiary care centre - are we overdoing gastrointestinal endoscopy?

Aim To evaluate the pattern of indications and a spectrum of colonic pathology, and to determine appropriateness of indications for colonoscopy in order to improve patient selection for colonoscopy. Methods This retrospective study includes 294 patients who were referred to the Gastroenterology Department from a primary care physician in order to approach endoscopic examination. Study data included patients' anamnestic data (comorbidities, positive family history, performed radiological examinations) an indication for the procedure, and colonoscopy findings.

Against the Odds: Management of Ureteral Calculus in Patient With Crossed Fused Renal Ectopia.

Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is a rare congenital abnormality of the urinary tract where the kidneys are fused on one side, while the ureter of the ectopic kidney crosses the midline with the normal entrance in the bladder on the contralateral side. Congenital anomalies are associated with a stone formation whose management represents a real challenge. To our knowledge, we report the second case of CFRE associated with ureteral stone, which has been successfully resolved with Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) and the first of its kind where a sufficient degree of stone disintegration has been achieved after a single session with a complete stone clearance during the follow-up.

Objectives The aim of the study was to determine carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) values in patients who developed and did not develop preeclampsia (PE), and to determine whether CIMT values could be predictors of PE development. Methods The study included pregnant women who were examined by regular ultrasound examination at the Materno-Infantil Presidente Vargas Hospital (HMIPV) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from April 2016 to September 2017. Increased Levels of Coagulation Factor XI in Plasma Are Related to Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Background: Alzheimer's disease is a complex disorder of unclear etiology that develops in the elderly population. It is a debilitating, progressive neurodegeneration for which disease-modifying therapies do not exist. Previous studies have suggested that, for a subset of patients, dysregulation in hemostasis might be one of the molecular mechanisms that ultimately leads to the development of neurodegeneration resulting in cognitive decline that represents the most prominent symptomatic characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.

Aim To evaluate a correlation of serum level of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) to the risk of the occurrence of complications in patients with the early phase of ST-segment elevation myocardical infarction (STEMI) treated with fibrinolytic therapy prior to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods A total of 54 patients with the diagnosis of STEMI treated with fibrinolytic therapy (alteplase) prior to PCI were included. Patients were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Clinic for Heart, Blood Vessel and Rheumatic Diseases in the period January to March 2018.

Kinking of Bilateral Internal Carotid Arteries as Cause of Cognitive Dysfunction.

Introduction: Dolichoarteriopathies of the internal carotid artery (DICAs) is divided into three forms: tortuous, coiling and kinking. In case of kinking, internal carotid artery forms a sharp angle of <90 degrees, while in the background there is metaplasia of a tunica media with unknown etiology. The association with stroke is still questionable, but it is believed that it can be associated with cerebral ischemia and with clinical symptomatology that accompanies cerebral ischemia.

Cardiac biomarkers and left ventricular systolic function in acute myocardial infarction with ST- segment elevation in diabetes mellitus type 2 patients.

Aim To determine a status of systolic function in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 with ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), to determine values of cardiac biomarkers in patients with DM type 2 with STEMI and correlate the parameters with ejection fraction of left ventricle (EFLV). Methods A total of 80 patients were divided into two groups, the study group (group I) consisting of 40 patients admitted with the diagnosis of DM type 2 and STEMI, and a control group (group II) with 40 patients with STEMI without diagnosed DM type 2.
