In this scoping review, we attempt to approach the topic of culture media and conditions from the practitioners' perspective aiming to highlight, in a comprehensive fashion, important aspects regarding the options available, introduce points of debate and controversy, while maintaining the viewpoint of the practicing embryologist's concerns.

Quantification of three beta-lactam antibiotics in breast milk and human plasma by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/positive-ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

The use of cephalosporins during breast feeding raises several issues, including the risk of drug exposure through breast milk for the infant. In this paper, a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/positive ion electrospray mass spectrometric assay (HILIC/ESI-MS) was developed for the quantitation of cefuroxime, cefoxitin, and cefazolin in breast milk and human plasma. The assay was based on the use of small sample size, 25 μL of biological samples, following acetonitrile precipitation of proteins and filtration that enabled injection into the HILIC/ESI-MS system.

Strategies to improve anxiety and depression in patients with COPD: a mental health perspective.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease characterized by progressive and only partially reversible symptoms. Worldwide, the incidence of COPD presents a disturbing continuous increase. Anxiety and depression are remarkably common in COPD patients, but the evidence about optimal approaches for managing psychological comorbidities in COPD remains unclear and largely speculative.

Synchronous adenocarcinoma and echinococcosis in the same ovary: a rare clinical entity.

Background: Serous adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of ovarian carcinoma, while ovarian echinococcosis is a rare disease of the female genital system. The simultaneous presence of adenocarcinoma and echinococcosis in the same ovary is extremely rare and little data exist regarding diagnosis and treatment approach.

Materials And Methods: In the present paper, we report a rare case of a 66-year-old Greek Caucasian woman of rural origin, with an adnexal mass, ascitic and pleural fluid.

Introduction: Infants born from mothers with Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) experience several complications, including a higher rate of postnatal hypocalcemia. In this study, we investigated the association between calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) and neonatal hypocalcemia observed in GDM pregnancies.

Methods: Our study consisted of 58 pregnant women with GDM and 40 healthy women and their neonates.

Effects of anthracyclines on aortic distensibility in patients with lymphomas: a prospective study.

Introduction: Anthracyclines have been widely used in the treatment of haematological malignancies. Their major adverse effect is cardiomyopathy, but their effect on vascular elasticity has not been completely elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of anthracyclines on aortic elastic properties in patients with lymphomas.

The association of Restless Legs Syndrome with hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), is a sensory-motor neurological disorder that appears to be surprisingly common in the community. Periodic limb movements in sleep are typically encountered in more than 80% of RLS patients and comprise involuntary muscular jerks in the lower limbs, such as flexion of the knees or ankles.  Iron deficiency and dopaminergic neuronal dysfunction in the central nervous system are currently thought to be the likely pathophysiological culprits.

Contribution of psychological factors in dropping out from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease rehabilitation programs.

Significant positive effects, particularly on psychological state in patients who completed the follow-up pulmonary rehabilitation programs, are indicated by a large number of studies. Yet, a remarkable proportion of selected patients drop out from these programs. In this study, we investigated existing differences on psychological variables among COPD patients who complete and those who drop out from pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
