Unlabelled: Assisted reproductive technology has evolved tremendously since the emergence of in vitro fertilization (IVF). In the course of the recent decade, there have been significant efforts in order to minimize multiple gestations, while improving percentages of singleton pregnancies and offering individualized services in IVF, in line with the trend of personalized medicine. Patients as well as clinicians and the entire IVF team benefit majorly from 'knowing what to expect' from an IVF cycle.

There are numerous reports on embryo culture media and conditions in the laboratory, as the subject is multifaceted and complex, reflecting the variation in practice. In this scoping review, we attempt to approach the topic of culture media and conditions from the practitioners' perspective aiming to highlight, in a comprehensive fashion, important aspects regarding the options available, introduce points of debate and controversy, while maintaining the viewpoint of the practicing embryologist's concerns.

Phyllodes tumors (PTs) of the breast constitute an uncommon group of mammary fibroepithelial lesions with ambiguous biologic behavior. Recent evidence suggests that epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), a driving force of cancer progression is implicated in PTs pathogenesis. Integrin-linked kinase (ILK), a focal adhesion kinase, has been implicated in cancer and EMT and represents a novel cancer therapeutic target.

Information on drug transfer into the breast milk is essential to protect the infant from undesirable adverse effects of maternal consumption of drugs and to allow effective pharmacological treatment of breastfeeding mothers. Metronidazole and fluconazole are two drugs frequently used in nursing women to treat various infections, thus questioning infant's safety due to drug exposure through breast milk. In this article a porous graphitized carbon LC/ESI-MS assay was developed for the quantitation of metronidazole and fluconazole in breast milk and human plasma.

Homozygous beta-thalassemia represents a serious hemoglobinopathy, in which an amazing prolongation in the survival rate of patients has been achieved over recent decades. A result of this otherwise positive evolution is the fact that bone problems have become a major issue in this group of patients. Through an in-depth review of the related literature, the purpose of this study is to present and comment on the totality of the data that have been published to date pertaining to the prevention and treatment of thalassemia bone-disease, focusing on: the contribution of diet and lifestyle, the treatment of hematologic disease and its complications, the management of hypercalciuria, the role of vitamins and minerals and the implementation of anti-osteoporosis medical regimen.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammation process of bone caused by a pathogenic microorganism and associated by edema, thrombosis of small vessels and eventually bone necrosis. Infection of bone occurs as a consequence of hematogenous dissemination of bacteria, invasion from a contiguous focuw of infection and skin breakdown. We report a case of lower limbs osteomyelitis due to Nocardia spp in a 68 years old man with Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) during his treatment of underlying vasculitis.

miRNAs have an important role as their deregulation is linked to endometrial cancer. : A custom miScript® miRNA PCR Array was used to investigate for the first time the expression of eight miRNAs in forty-nine histologically confirmed Liquid Based cytology endometrial samples. The expression profile of the same miRNAs was also examined in sixty formalin-fixed tissue samples.

Background: Cervical cancer screening has traditionally been based on cervical cytology. Given the aetiological relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical carcinogenesis, HPV testing has been proposed as an alternative screening test.
Objectives: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of HPV testing for detecting histologically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) of grade 2 or worse (CIN 2+), including adenocarcinoma in situ, in women participating in primary cervical cancer screening; and how it compares to the accuracy of cytological testing (liquid-based and conventional) at various thresholds.

Preeclampsia has been linked to high morbidity and mortality during pregnancy. However, no efficient pharmacological options for the prevention of this condition are currently available. Preeclampsia is thought to share several pathophysiologic mechanisms with cardiovascular disease, which has led to investigations for the potential role of statins (HMG CoA reductase inhibitors) in its prevention and early management.

To evaluate the predictive value of genes involved in resistance to platinum-taxane chemotherapy in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Microdissected formalin-fixed tumoral samples from 187 EOC patients' primary tumors (90 and 97 samples from matched patients in the experimental and validation sets, respectively) were analyzed. All specimens were analyzed for ATP7b, BRCA1, BRCA2, PARP1, UIMC1(RAP80), HOXA9, DAXX, TXN (TRX1), THBS1 (TSP1) and PRR13 (TXR1) mRNA expression by quantitative real-time PCR.

The use of cephalosporins during breast feeding raises several issues, including the risk of drug exposure through breast milk for the infant. In this paper, a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/positive ion electrospray mass spectrometric assay (HILIC/ESI-MS) was developed for the quantitation of cefuroxime, cefoxitin, and cefazolin in breast milk and human plasma. The assay was based on the use of small sample size, 25 μL of biological samples, following acetonitrile precipitation of proteins and filtration that enabled injection into the HILIC/ESI-MS system.

Background: Sequential administration of anthracycline and taxane is the current standard of care adjuvant regimen for node-positive early breast cancer. Due to long-term toxicity concerns, anthracycline-free regimens have been developed. We compared a sequential dose-dense anthracycline and taxane regimen with the anthracycline-free regimen of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease characterized by progressive and only partially reversible symptoms. Worldwide, the incidence of COPD presents a disturbing continuous increase. Anxiety and depression are remarkably common in COPD patients, but the evidence about optimal approaches for managing psychological comorbidities in COPD remains unclear and largely speculative.

Background: Serous adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of ovarian carcinoma, while ovarian echinococcosis is a rare disease of the female genital system. The simultaneous presence of adenocarcinoma and echinococcosis in the same ovary is extremely rare and little data exist regarding diagnosis and treatment approach.

Introduction: Anthracyclines have been widely used in the treatment of haematological malignancies. Their major adverse effect is cardiomyopathy, but their effect on vascular elasticity has not been completely elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of anthracyclines on aortic elastic properties in patients with lymphomas.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), is a sensory-motor neurological disorder that appears to be surprisingly common in the community. Periodic limb movements in sleep are typically encountered in more than 80% of RLS patients and comprise involuntary muscular jerks in the lower limbs, such as flexion of the knees or ankles. Iron deficiency and dopaminergic neuronal dysfunction in the central nervous system are currently thought to be the likely pathophysiological culprits.

Significant positive effects, particularly on psychological state in patients who completed the follow-up pulmonary rehabilitation programs, are indicated by a large number of studies. Yet, a remarkable proportion of selected patients drop out from these programs. In this study, we investigated existing differences on psychological variables among COPD patients who complete and those who drop out from pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
