Endocannabinoid system and aggression across animal species.

Neurosci Biobehav Rev

October 2023

Grupo de Neurociencias: Laboratorio de Cannabinoides, Departamento de Fisiología, Facultad de Medicina, UNAM, Mexico.

This narrative review article summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the relationship between the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and aggression across multiple vertebrate species. Experimental evidence indicates that acute administration of phytocannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, and the pharmacological enhancement of endocannabinoid signaling decreases aggressive behavior in several animal models. However, research on the chronic effects of cannabinoids on animal aggression has yielded inconsistent findings, indicating a need for further investigation.

Metastasis remains the leading cause of mortality in prostate cancer patients. The presence of tumor cells in lymph nodes is an established prognostic indicator for several cancer types, such as melanoma, breast, oral, pancreatic, and cervical cancers. Emerging evidence highlights the role of microRNAs enclosed within extracellular vesicles as facilitators of molecular communication between tumors and metastatic sites in the lymph nodes.

Viral Immunol

October 2023

Departamento de Microbiología y Parasitología, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico City, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • * Interestingly, higher levels of certain cytokines (like IL-1, IL-6) were found in mild COVID-19 patients, along with significant cell damage in both mild and severe cases, contrasting with uninfected individuals.
  • * The study highlights that mild cases show elevated levels of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which may link to stronger IgM and IgG antibody production, and emphasizes the need to understand the cytotoxic effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the oral mucosa.

Pachydermodactyly (PDD) is an uncommon and benign digital fibromatosis of unknown etiology. It is characterized by a fusiform swelling of the medial and lateral sides of the fingers, with unspecific histopathological features of an increased number of fibroblasts, collagen, and mucin deposit in the dermis. Due to its rarity, PDD could be misdiagnosed as rheumatic arthropathies, which could lead to unnecessary immunosuppressant treatments.

Background: Early onset facial paralysis is usually managed with cross-face nerve grafts, however the low number of axons that reach the target muscle may result in weakness or failure. Multiple-source innervation, or 'supercharging', seeks to combine the advantages of different donor nerves while minimizing their weaknesses. We propose a combination of cross-face nerve grafts with local extra-facial nerve transfers to achieve earlier facial reanimation in our patients.

It has been proposed that infection by adipogenic viruses constitutes a "low risk" factor for obesity. Here, we report the presence of adenovirus 36 (Ad36) and its viral load copy number in fat tissue of participants with obesity and normal weight; phylogenetic analysis was performed to describe their relationship and genetic variability among viral haplotypes. Adipose tissue obtained from 105 adult patients with obesity (cases) and 26 normal-weight adult participants as controls were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) amplifying the partial Ad36 E1a gene.

Consensus document on acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) established by the Mexican Association of Hepatology.

Ann Hepatol

May 2024

Gastroenterology Department, Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad # 71 Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico.

Acute-on chronic liver failure (ACLF) has been an intensively debated topic mainly due to the lack of a unified definition and diagnostic criteria. The growing number of publications describing the mechanisms of ACLF development, the progression of the disease, outcomes and treatment has contributed to a better understanding of the disease, however, it has also sparked the debate about this condition. As an attempt to provide medical professionals with a more uniform definition that could be applied to our population, the first Mexican consensus was performed by a panel of experts in the area of hepatology in Mexico.

Pressure alopecias: A review.

J Am Acad Dermatol

January 2024

Trichology Clinic, Department of Dermatology, Hospital General "Dr. Manuel Gea González," Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Pressure-induced alopecias (PAs) are a rare hair loss condition triggered by restricted blood flow to the scalp due to external pressure, occurring in two types: type 1 from prolonged pressure (such as during surgeries) and type 2 from cosmetic procedures involving injectables.
  • Type 2 PA is becoming more common and can be confused with vascular occlusion-induced alopecia, highlighting the need for accurate diagnosis through clinical evaluation and potential use of trichoscopy.
  • While hair loss can be evident, the condition is often self-limiting, with most cases seeing hair regrowth; treatment is generally unnecessary, but prognosis varies based on the extent of ischemia and response to timely interventions

Predictive validity of a parental questionnaire for identifying children with developmental language disorders.

Front Psychol

June 2023

Departamento de Fonoaudiología, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Background: The underdiagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD) in children is a serious problem in developing countries with limited resources. It has long been noted that the concerns parents have about their children's health and development are richly informative, and if this information can be used for diagnosis, it may provide a means to address the problem of underdiagnosis of DLD. This study aimed to quantify the utility of parental linguistic concern questions (PLCQ) on the identification of language disorders in monolingual Spanish-speaking children in Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Proliferating pilar tumors are rare skin tumors that typically occur on the scalp, mainly affecting women and originating from hair follicles.
  • A study conducted at a hospital in Mexico over 23 years identified 17 cases, with a mean age of 54.9 years; most tumors were benign, though 3 cases were malignant.
  • The findings confirm that scalp involvement is common and that while many tumors are asymptomatic and benign, there is a small risk of malignancy that should not be overlooked.
