Unlabelled: To determine the occurence of embolism in retinal circulation after invasive cardiovascular procedures and the risk of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO).

Material And Methods: During a 3 month period 153 patients (303 eyes)--101 male/52 female--who had undergone coronarography or stent implantation were examined before and 24 hours after the procedure. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was taken, visual field examination was done and fundoscopy was performed.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the neck after total laryngectomy.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an unusual, life threatening, rapidly advancing infection characterized by widespread fascial and subcutaneous tissue necrosis and gangrene of the skin. It most commonly affects the extremities, abdominal wall and perineum, whereas cervical NF is rare. NF of the head and neck is often caused by both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms found in the upper aerodigestive tract.

Laparoscopic transgastric gastrocystostomy pancreatic pseudocyst.

Article presents a laparoscopic cystogastrostomy of pancreatic pseudocysts. Pancreatic pseudocyst is a common complication of acute or chronic pancreatitis. It is treated by drainage.

Bacterial colonization or infection in chronic sinusitis.

The aim of this study was the determination of bacteria present in maxillary and ethmoid cavities in patients with chronic sinusitis and to correlate these findings with bacteria simultaneously present in their nasopharynx. The purpose of this correlation was to establish the role of bacteria found in chronically inflamed sinuses and to evaluate if the bacteria present colonized or infected sinus mucosa. Nasopharyngeal and sinus swabs of 65 patients that underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery were cultivated and at the same time the presence of leukocytes were determined in each swab.

Absence of Helicobacter pylori in healthy laryngeal mucosa.

Objectives: To evaluate the presence of Helicobacter pylori in healthy laryngeal mucosa.

Design: Prospective analysis of Helicobacter pylori colonisation in healthy laryngeal mucosa, using the 13C urea breath test and polymerase chain reaction analysis.

Subjects: Twenty randomly chosen men (28-78 years) without laryngeal pathology or gastrointestinal disease were investigated.

Simultaneous chickenpox and measles infection among migrant children who stayed in Italy during the second half of June 2011.

We are reporting on a household outbreak of measles, in which cases of simultaneous measles and chickenpox infection occured in children of a family who resided in Italy during the incubation period (June 2011). In three children, fever and generalized confluent macular rash were the dominant symptoms. Serology testing revealed simultaneous measles and chickenpox infection in four children.

Giant aneurysm of basilar artery.

In the article we showed the patient, a woman with unruptured giant aneurysm of basilar artery, we showed the done examinations, and therapy dilemmas about what to do in the given case. We found in literature a number of examples which suggest operation treatment, but of embolisation too, some suggest conservative treatment.

Effect of elevated catecholamine levels on cerebral hemodynamics in patients with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.

The aim of the study was to assess the correlation between the levels of catecholamines and cerebral hemodynamics in patients with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study included 50 patients with chronic PTSD hospitalized for psychiatric treatment for the first time, and 50 healthy control subjects. All study subjects were in the 30-50 age group.

Angiomyoma--angioleiomyoma of the cheek.

The authors present the case of an angiomyoma--angioleiomyoma of the cheek in a 58-year-old man. The tumour was palpable, although clinically not visible, and the only case of a tumour of smooth muscle treated in the Clinical Department of Oral Surgery over the last 40 years. The operation was performed in the Outpatient Department by intraoral procedure.

Non-invasive ultrasound guided compression repair of post puncture femoral pseudoaneurysm.

Background: Pseudo aneurysm (PSA) of femoral artery is the second common post puncture complication. If PSA is less than 18 mm, it can be closed spontaneously and it can be asymptomatic. If not, it needs treatment.

Spontaneous resolution of post-traumatic chronic subdural hematoma: case report.

Spontaneous resolution of post-traumatic chronic subdural hematoma is a very rare and unexpected event. It has been rarely reported in the literature, mostly cases of chronic subdural hematoma resolution in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Operative procedure is generally considered the treatment of choice for chronic subdural hematoma.

Primary malignant melanoma of gallbladder.

Gallbladder primary malignant melanoma (GPMM) is a rare and controversial entity. The existing controversy on the subject appears mainly because of the lack of definitive objective criteria of primitivity. Objective criteria proposed by the specific literature for distinguishing GPMM from secondary gallbladder melanoma include the exclusion of previous primitive melanoma, absence of synchronous involment of other sites, the unicity of lesion, its polipoid or papilary shape and the presence of a junctional melanocitary component.

Laparoscopic treatment of achalasia--first case in Croatia.

Esophageal achalasia is a primary esophageal motility disorder. Commonly used treatments are botulinum toxin injections, endoscopic balloon dilation and surgical myotomy with or without fundoplication. We are hereby presenting the first case of laproscopic myotomy with fundoplication performed in Croatia.

Gastric adenocarcinoma metastases to the alveolar mucosa of the mandible: a case report and review of the literature.

Malignant tumours rarely metastasize to the oral cavity. When they do, such metastases may arise from various locations including the lung, breast, kidney, prostate and colon. Soft tissue oral metastasis from gastric adenocarcinoma is extremely rare, and limited information exists regarding the presentation and work-up of metastatic gastric carcinoma into the oral soft tissue.

A correlative study of histology and imprint cytology of gastric mucosa biopsy in the diagnosis gastric cancer.

The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of gastric mucosa imprint cytology in detecting stomach cancer. Analyzed were 364 cytological and pathohistiological samples taken from 335 patients having suspected diagnosis of gastric cancer. Every specimen was submitted to slide imprinting and then fixed in formalin for further processing with routine histopathology.

[Ocular dirofilariasis: a case report].

A case of ocular dirofilariasis in a female patient is presented. The zoonosis caused by parasites of the genus Dirofilaria is relatively rare in humans, with a higher incidence in south and central Europe, Asia and Africa. In Europe, dirofilariasis is mostly caused by the species Dirofilaria repens.

Treatment of common bile duct stones--is the role of ERCP changed in era of minimally invasive surgery?

Unlabelled: In 10-15% of the patients that underwent cholecystectomy, common bile duct stones were found either during the preoperative, intraoperative or postoperative evaluation. Their treatment traditionally was based on open approach and extraction of calculi, with development of endoscopic procedures we have ERCP with endoscopic sphincterotomy, but due to rapid development of laparoscopic procedures now-days we have other therapeutic options such as laparoscopic transcystic extraction and laparoscopic choledohotomy.

The aim of the study was to assess the possible correlation between catecholamine and cortisol levels and changes in cerebral hemodynamics in patients with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mechanical ventilation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, noninvasive vs. invasive method (randomized prospective study).

Acute respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presents an increasing problem throughout the world. The aim of this study was to compare invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) for patients with COPD. A prospective, randomized trial was performed in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit for the period of 36 months and included 156 patients with COPD.

The comparison of anthropometrical parameters of the four-year-old children in the urban and rural Slavonia, Croatia, 1985 and 2005.

The aim of the study is to identify the secular trends in the anthropometrical parameters of the 4-year-old children in Slavonski Brod, Slavonia, Croatia, and the nearby rural area by comparing data of height, weight, and mid-arm circumferences from 2005 with the historical control data published in 1985. The cross-sectional study of 342 children, aged 4 years, from Slavonski Brod and the nearby villages was taken in 2005. The body height, weight, and mid-arm circumferences were measured and compared with the historical control data from the study performed in 1985 in the same area using the same methods.

Comparison of 18F-FDG positron emission tomography and computed tomography in patients with colorectal carcinoma and lymphoma: our initial clinical experience.

Findings obtained by fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) and computed tomography (CT) were compared in patients with malignant lymphoma and colorectal carcinoma. In 14 malignant lymphoma patients, 16 18F-FDG PET procedures were performed to assess chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy outcome (remission). One patient with clinically overt relapse of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma underwent PET to assess disease dissemination prior to prescribing second-line chemotherapy.

Duke Treadmill Score in prioritizing patients for coronary angiography: retrospective study of a Croatian regional hospital.

Aim of the study was to determine the potential of Duke Treadmill Score (DTS) in prioritizing patients for coronary angiography in a transitional country clinical setting. We analyzed 114patients with suspected stable coronary artery disease who underwent exercise treadmill testing, and coronary angiography in Slavonski Brod General Hospital. DTS was calculated from treadmill test as: exercise time--(5 x ST deviation in mm)--(4 x exercise angina).

Increased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background And Objectives: Studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus have shown conflicting results. We conducted this study to determine whether postmenopausal women with diabetes have higher BMD than non-diabetic women of similar age, and to investigate the relationship between BMD and relevant clinical characteristics in these groups of women.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed lumbar spine, femoral neck, and radius BMD data and other relevant clinical data for 130 postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 166 non-diabetic women collected during a voluntary screening for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women without a history of low bone mass or osteoporotic fractures.
