The aim of the study was to assess biometric factor aberrations and differences among groups of eyes with cataract and pseudoexfoliative syndrome, cataract and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, and cataract and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and to determine biometric factors of the eye specific for the group of glaucomatous patients with pseudoexfoliative syndrome by use of optical low-coherence reflectometry. This retrospective study included 72 patients, and the study sample of 102 eyes was divided into the following three groups according to diagnosis: 29 eyes with pseudoexfoliative syndrome and cataract; 36 eyes with POAG and cataract; and 37 eyes with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and cataract. Data on biometric measurements (central corneal thickness, pupillary diameter, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, axial length, retinal thickness, astigmatism and white-to-white) obtained by use of optical low-coherence reflectometry on a Lenstar LS 900® (Haag-Streit International) were collected and analyzed by thorough survey of medical documentation of patients scheduled for cataract surgery at Department of Ophthalmology, Sveti Duh University Hospital in Zagreb, Croatia.

Postpericardiotomy syndrome (PPS) is worsening or new formation of pericardial and/or pleural effusion mostly 1 to 6 weeks after cardiac surgery, as a result of autoimmune inflammatory reaction within pleural and pericardial space. Its incidence varies among different studies and registries (2% to 30%), as well as according to the type of cardiac surgery performed. We conducted this retrospective analysis of PPS incidence and diagnostic and treatment strategies in patients referred for cardiac surgery for revascularization, valvular and/or aortic surgery.

: Stratifying patients with paroxysmal or short-term persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) who are at greater risk of developing permanent AF is challenging. Aim of our prospective study was to evaluate association of laboratory parameters (biochemistry and complete blood count (CBC)) together with standard demographic, clinical and echocardiography parameters, with AF progression.: We prospectively recruited 579 patients with AF and divided them into two groups at index hospitalization: paroxysmal or persistent (non-permanent AF), and long-term persistent or permanent AF patients (permanent AF).

The purpose of this study was to report the identification OXA-48 carbapenemase in seven extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-positive clinical isolates, fully susceptible to all carbapenems by disk diffusion and E-test methods, but with borderline minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of ertapenem. This report points to the necessity for determination of carbapenem MICs in ESBL-positive isolates and additional phenotypic testing for carbapenemases in all isolates with borderline ertapenem MIC defined by EUCAST. The isolates showed a high level of resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins because of the production of an additional ESBL belonging to CTX-M family.

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), an environmental form of aristolochic acid nephropathy is characterized with later onset and milder forms of hypertension (HT). Thus, we hypothesized that arterial stiffness progresses slower in BEN patients resulting in lower CV mortality. A total of 186 hemodialysed (HD) patients (90 BEN, 96 non-BEN; 67.

Recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) have led to change of approach in clinical practice. New treatments have been approved based on the results of randomized multicenter trials for first line and for salvage therapy, and the results of numerous ongoing clinical trials are permanently providing new answers and further refining of therapeutic strategies. This is paralleled by substantial increase in understanding the disease genetics due to major advances in the next generation sequencing (NGS) technology.

Objectives: Serum chitotriosidase activity (CHIT1) is a biomarker of macrophage activation with an important role in inflammation-induced tissue remodeling and fibrosis. Macrophages have been described to play a crucial role in regulating pathological erythropoiesis in polycythemia vera (PV). The aim of this study was to evaluate CHIT1 in patients diagnosed with Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs).

Background: To analyze the frequency of atypical fluorescence hybridization signal patterns and estimate the complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and major molecular response (MMR) during 12 months of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy in patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia.
Methods: The study included bone marrow and peripheral blood samples from 122 patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia. Detection of the - fusion gene () was performed using fluorescence hybridization with a dual-color dual-fusion translocation probe, and MMR analysis was performed using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction method.

Introduction: Myocardial bridging is congenital anomaly which usually has benign prognosis but there are also reports suggesting that it can be associated with ischemic clinical syndromes presenting with chest pain. Coronary computed tomography angiography is a well-established method for detecting myocardial bridging. However, clinical significance of this anomaly still remains unclear.

Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne infectious disease characterized by three disease stages. In the areas endemic for borreliosis, every acute facial palsy indicates serologic testing and implies specific approach to the disease. Th e aim of the study was to identify and confirm the value of acoustic refl ex and House-Brackman (HB) grading scale as prognostic indicators of facial palsy in neuroborreliosis.

Background: To examine the relationship of the Böhler's angle with age, sex, and laterality, and to analyze the interrater agreement.
Methods: After 248 digital lateral radiographs of the foot were submitted to exclusion criteria, three raters independently measured the Böhler's angle on the remaining 130 X-rays in PACS. The variables were analyzed with correlation coefficients, and one-way ANOVA.

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant public health problem and it is not possible to precisely predict its progression to terminal renal failure. According to current guidelines, CKD stages are classified based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria. Aims of this study were to determine the reliability of predictive equation in estimation of CKD prevalence in Croatian areas with endemic nephropathy (EN), compare the results with non-endemic areas, and to determine if the prevalence of CKD stages 3-5 was increased in subjects with EN.

Botryoid cyst, a rare type of odontogenic cyst, is usually considered a multilocular variant of lateral periodontal cyst. It was first described in 1973, and up to the present less than a hundred cases have been reported in the literature. Botryoid cysts are characterized by a multilocular histologic finding and a higher risk of recurrence than lateral periodontal cysts.
