Aging towards walkable futures: insights from a multidisciplinary workshop held in Barcelona, Spain.

Background: The aging of the world's population and the increase in sedentary lifestyles are leading to an increase in walking impairments at older ages. Here, we aimed to comprehensively discuss walking in the context of an aging population; and identify and agree on a list of future research priorities and policy actions.

Methods: We followed a participatory approach and held a multidisciplinary two-day workshop on October, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain, with experts in the fields of aging and walking, and participants from the general public.

Background: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) was one of the most common causes of death in the European Union in 2017. Severity and mortality of CAP increase with age and an aging European population will require increased planning for prevention, control, and management of CAP. The purpose of this study was to provide an updated population-based estimate of the incidence of CAP requiring hospitalization in Northern Europe.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with sorafenib and sintilimab in the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Method: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data from 50 patients with unresectable HCC treated at Yunhe County People's Hospital of Zhejiang Province from January 2023 to December 2023. The patients were divided into two groups according to treatment regimen: a control group (n=20) treated with TACE alone, and a combination group (n=30) treated with TACE combined with sorafenib and sintilimab.

Purpose: Rapid detection of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) from clinical samples facilitates the timely provision of optimal treatment regimens for tuberculosis (TB) patients.

Methods: In November, 2023, the WHO released its second catalogue of resistance-conferring mutations in Mtb. Utilizing this information, we developed a single 17-plex PCR assay covering 16 key resistance genes and modified thermo-protection buffer to amplify 30 kbp DNA directly from sputum samples for nanopore sequencing.

Background: Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is the main bioactive component of poplar type propolis. We previously reported that treatment with caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) suppressed the cell proliferation, tumor growth, as well as migration and invasion of prostate cancer (PCa) cells via inhibition of signaling pathways of AKT, c-Myc, Wnt and EGFR. We also demonstrated that combined treatment of CAPE and docetaxel altered the genes involved in glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle.

Axilla Management in Breast Cancer Surgery: Brief Review and Current Practice Recommendations.

The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the axilla in breast cancer patients has changed significantly over the past 30 years, with the replacement of complete axillary lymph node dissection practices by less invasive approaches. Reference is made to clinical findings that have led to practical treatment recommendations and are paving the way to new levels of de-escalation in breast cancer surgery.

Rating of overall childbirth experience: A qualitative study of a quantitative measurement.

Introduction: Overall childbirth experience scores are used both in research and in clinical settings. Since it is still not fully understood what assessment of childbirth experience on a single-item numeric rating scale or visual analog scale represents, the aim of this study was to explore women's reasoning and thoughts when rating overall childbirth experience numerically.

Material And Methods: A qualitative interview study of 26 women was conducted using a think-aloud technique at a university referral hospital in Sweden.

Methods: A register-based cohort study of 6189 Finnish primiparous women who had a singleton delivery between 2009 and 2015. Data on pregnancy and delivery outcomes, psychiatric diagnosis, prescription drug purchases and offspring congenital anomalies were obtained from Finnish national registers.

Lessons Learned From the Liver About the Undergraduate to Graduate Medical Education Transition.

The burden of cirrhosis and chronic liver disease is growing, yet there is a projected worsening deficit in hepatology providers. As such, cirrhosis and liver disease have been important inclusions within the core curricula of Internal Medicine. Formal assessments of provider preparedness resulting from the curriculum are lacking though.

Development and nomogram prediction of early postoperative recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma based on preoperative CT imaging radiomic features and serum features related to microvascular infiltration.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by high postoperative recurrence rates, and predicting early recurrence is crucial for improving clinical outcomes, yet remains challenging. Both preoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging radiomic features and serum biomarkers related to microvascular infiltration are important indicators of HCC prognosis. This study aimed to develop a nomogram model incorporating both preoperative CT radiomic features and serum biomarkers associated with microvascular infiltration to predict early postoperative recurrence in HCC patients.

Employment Nondiscrimination Protection and Mental Health Among Sexual Minority Adults.

Importance: In the 2020 Bostock v Clayton County decision, the US Supreme Court extended employment nondiscrimination protection to sexual minority adults. The health impacts of this ruling and similar policies related to sexual orientation-based discrimination are not currently known.

Objective: To estimate changes in mental health following the Bostock decision among sexual minority adults in states that gained employment nondiscrimination protection (intervention states) compared with those in states with protections already in place (control states).

This cross-sectional study recruited 150 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules through ultrasound examination from January 2022 to January 2023 at Jinan Central Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University, and Qingyun County Maternal and Child Health Hospital as the case group, which were categorized based on their levels of anxiety and depression.
