Identification of serum biomarkers for chronic kidney disease using serum metabolomics.

This study aimed to identify biomarkers for chronic kidney disease (CKD) by studying serum metabolomics. Serum samples were collected from 194 non-dialysis CKD patients and 317 healthy controls (HC). Using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), untargeted metabolomics analysis was conducted.

Unveiling microbial dynamics in lung adenocarcinoma and adjacent nontumor tissues: insights from nicotine exposure and diverse clinical stages via nanopore sequencing technology.

Background: Lung is the largest mucosal area of the human body and directly connected to the external environment, facing microbial exposure and environmental stimuli. Therefore, studying the internal microorganisms of the lung is crucial for a deeper understanding of the relationship between microorganisms and the occurrence and progression of lung cancer.

Methods: Tumor and adjacent nontumor tissues were collected from 38 lung adenocarcinoma patients and used nanopore sequencing technology to sequence the 16s full-length sequence of bacteria, and combining bioinformatics methods to identify and quantitatively analyze microorganisms in tissues, as well as to enrich the metabolic pathways of microorganisms.

Microbial Communities and Functional Genes in Periodontitis and Healthy Controls.

Background: Periodontitis is a chronic progressive disease and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Recent studies have shown the impact of oral microbial communities on systemic health and diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer's disease. In previous case control studies investigatin the relationship between periodontal disease and the oral microbiota, little attention has been paid to the intersections of these domains.

Safety and immunogenicity of CoronaVac in healthy adults: A prospective observational multicenter real-world study in Henan Province, China.

Vaccination has emerged as the primar approach for managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite certain clinical trials reporting the safety and immunogenicity of CoronaVac, additional multicenter real-world studies are still necessary. In this study, we recruited 506 healthy volunteers who were not infected with COVID-19 or vaccinated.

The changes of gut microbiota and metabolites in different drug-induced liver injuries.

The increasing incidence of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) has become a major concern. Gut microbiota, as another organ of the human body, has been studied in various tumors, cardiovascular metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease and human immunity. The studies mentioned above have confirmed its important impact on the occurrence and development of DILI.

CD9 exacerbates pathological cardiac hypertrophy through regulating GP130/STAT3 signaling pathway.

CD9 is a member of the tetraspanin protein family, which has been widely studied in inflammation and cancer, but not in pathological cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we found that the expression of CD9 was increased in transaortic constriction (TAC) myocardial tissue. Knockdown of CD9 alleviated damage to cardiac function in the TAC model and reduced heart weight, cardiomyocyte size, and degree of fibrosis, and vice versa.

Case Report: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing assists in dynamic pathogen monitoring: powerful tool for progressing severe pneumonia.

Background: Severe community-acquired pneumonia (sCAP) is life-threatening and characterized by intensive care unit (ICU) admission and high mortality. And they are vulnerable to hospital-acquired infection. In such a severe condition, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) outperforms for short turnaround time and broad detection spectrum.

Transcriptional analysis of the expression and prognostic value of lipid droplet-localized proteins in hepatocellular carcinoma.

The accumulation of lipid droplets (LDs) in hepatocytes is the main pathogenesis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is also the key risk factor for the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). LDs behaviors are demonstrated to be associated with HCC advancement, and are tightly regulated by a subset protein localized on the surface of LDs. However, the role of LDs-localized protein in HCC has been rarely investigated.

NSUN2 stimulates tumor progression via enhancing TIAM2 mRNA stability in pancreatic cancer.

NSUN2 is a nuclear RNA methyltransferase which catalyzes 5-methylcytosine (m5C), a posttranscriptional RNA modification. Aberrant m5C modification has been implicated in the development of multiple malignancies. However, its function in pancreatic cancer (PC) needs to be elucidated.

Use of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in diagnosing lung abscesses caused by oral bacteria.

Lung abscesses are one of the most common lower respiratory tract infections worldwide and can seriously endanger life. However, pathogens associated with lung abscesses still cannot be detected quickly and accurately with the current microbial detection technology. Here, the case of a 53-year-old male with a lung abscess caused by oral bacteria is reported.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neurological disease occurring in patients with hepatic insufficiency and/or portal-systemic blood shunting based on cirrhosis. The pathogenesis is not completely clear till now, but it is believed that hyperammonemia is the core of HE. Hyperammonemia caused by increased sources of ammonia and decreased metabolism further causes mental problems through the gut-liver-brain axis.

This study aims to identify the effectiveness of nsPEFs in the treatment of HCC and analyze the alterations in the gut microbiome and serum metabonomics after ablation.

Oral Fungal Alterations in Patients with COVID-19 and Recovered Patients.

The oral bacteriome, gut bacteriome, and gut mycobiome are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the oral fungal microbiota in COVID-19 remains unclear. This article aims to characterize the oral mycobiome in COVID-19 and recovered patients.

Clinical application value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the diagnosis of central nervous system infections.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical application value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in central nervous system (CNS) infections. Both mNGS and routine examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with CNS infections retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of mNGS in this cohort and were ultimately compared with a clinical diagnosis. A total of 94 cases consistent with CNS infections were included in the analysis.

A nanomedicine based on stoichiometric coordination of camptothecin and organoplatinum (II) for synergistic antitumor therapy.

Precise combination therapy, involving multiple chemotherapeutics with pharmacologically synergistic antitumor effects, is a promising approach to address the challenge of monotherapy with insufficient activity towards their targets of interest. We employed Pt←pyridine coordination-driven assembly to construct a stoichiometric coordination complex of camptothecin and organoplatinum (II) (Pt-CPT). The Pt-CPT complex exhibited a remarkable synergistic effect toward several tumor cell lines, which is equal to the optimal synergistic effect of (PEt)Pt(OTf) (Pt) and CPT mixture at various ratios.

Clinical application of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in tuberculosis diagnosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical diagnostic value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for tuberculosis (TB).

Methods: This retrospective study included 52 patients with suspected TB infection. mNGS, targeted PCR, acid-fast staining and, T-SPOT.

The length of stay (LOS) in hospital varied considerably in different patients with COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. The study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of Omicron patients, identify prognostic factors, and develop a prognostic model to predict the LOS of Omicron patients. This was a single center retrospective study in a secondary medical institution in China.

Background: Alterations in oral microbiota in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is less evaluated. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of the oral microbiome in SLE patients and healthy controls, and construct an SLE classifier based on the oral microbiota.

Methods: We sequenced tongue-coating samples of individuals in treatment-naïve SLE (n = 182) and matched healthy controls (n = 280).
