Our objective was to provide a comparative analysis of the trends in racial and ethnic representation within different subspecialties in medicine.

Endocrinological outcomes after transcranial resection of tuberculum sellae meningiomas: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) arise from the anterior skull base. Endocrine status after TSM resection is an important determinant of quality of life. We sought to better characterize the risk of postoperative endocrinopathy for patients with TSM undergoing open transcranial approach (TCA) microsurgical resection.

Neurosurgery perception of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols are widespread in several fields, particularly general surgery, and attempt to deliver surgical care at a lower cost while also improving patient outcomes. However, few institutions have implemented ERAS protocols in neurosurgery. As such, a survey of neurosurgeons on the current state of ERAS in neurosurgery was conducted to provide insight on scaling the practice nationally.

The Minimally Invasive Posterolateral Transcavernous-Transtentorial Approach. Technical Nuances, Proof of Feasibility, and Surgical Outcomes Throughout a Case Series of Sphenopetroclival Meningiomas.

Objective: Sphenopetroclival (SPC) meningiomas are considered among the most complex skull-base neoplasms to approach surgically. We aim to determine whether some SPC meningiomas can be safely and effectively treated using a modified minimally invasive pterional posterolateral transcavernous-transtentorial approach (MIPLATTA).

Methods: Fourteen patients harboring SPC meningiomas were surgically treated through a MIPLATTA.

Practicing neurosurgery in 2021 requires a detailed knowledge of the vocabulary and mechanisms for coding and reimbursement, which should include general knowledge at the global level and fluency at the provider level. It is specifically of interest for the neurosurgeon to understand conceptually the nuances of hospital reimbursement. That knowledge is especially germane as more neurosurgeons become hospital employees.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed health care delivery across the United States. Few analyses have specifically looked at quantifying the financial impact of the pandemic on practicing neurosurgeons. A survey analysis was performed to address this need.

An Assessment of Neurosurgery Resident Clinical and Socioeconomic Training: The 2013 Council of State Neurosurgical Societies Postresidency Survey Results.

Objective: The Council of State Neurosurgical Societies surveyed neurosurgeons applying for oral board certification in 2008 to assess their preparedness to practice. This survey was repeated in 2013 for a subsequent group of board applicants to evaluate the quality of neurosurgery training and identify opportunities for improvement.

Methods: Applicants for the American Board of Neurological Surgeons oral examination from 2008 to 2013 were provided an anonymous survey focused on clinical and socioeconomic skills.

In an effort, to curtail rising health care costs, government and private payers have begun to focus on measuring quality of care. Along with quality improvement initiatives, clinical practice guidelines may also be utilized to provide better care. Clinical practice guidelines are recommendations for clinicians about the care of patients with specific conditions.

Advocacy to Government and Stakeholders.

Participation in the health care and government advocacy arena may represent new and challenging perspectives for the traditional neurosurgeon. However, those with a strong understanding of the laws, rules, regulations, and fiscal allocation process can directly influence the practice of neurosurgery in the United States. We seek to shine light on the black box of how health care laws are passed, the influence and techniques of lobbying, and the role and rules surrounding political action committees.

Background And Purpose: The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the occurrence of ischemic stroke has been the subject of increased speculation but has not been confirmed in large observational studies. We investigated the association between COVID-19 and stroke.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study involving patients discharged from a healthcare system in New York State, from January to April 2020.

Minimizing SARS-CoV-2 exposure when performing surgical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Infection from the SARS-CoV-2 virus has led to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the large number of patients affected, healthcare personnel and facility resources are stretched to the limit; however, the need for urgent and emergent neurosurgical care continues. This article describes best practices when performing neurosurgical procedures on patients with COVID-19 based on multi-institutional experiences.

Methods: We defined data curation as the process of management of data throughout its lifecycle to ensure it can be used into the future. We used a literature review and Delphi exercises to capture insights from the Primary Care Informatics Working Group (PCIWG) of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).
