Article Synopsis
  • TNF inhibitors (TNFi) are effective for treating axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), but data on how long patients continue using them and reasons for stopping is limited.
  • In a study of 255 US Veterans over ten years, 84.3% of patients persisted with TNFi after 12 months, but only 47.1% remained after 36 months; infliximab showed higher persistence compared to adalimumab, while secondary non-response was the leading cause of discontinuation.
  • Factors like age, smoking, and comorbidities didn't predict persistence, but conditions like stroke increased discontinuation rates, highlighting the need for further research and better access to alternative therapies.

How and when symbionts are acquired by their animal hosts has a profound impact on the ecology and evolution of the symbiosis. Understanding symbiont acquisition is particularly challenging in deep-sea organisms because early life stages are so rarely found. Here, we collected early developmental stages of three deep-sea bathymodioline species from different habitats to identify when these acquire their symbionts and how their body plan adapts to a symbiotic lifestyle.

Our understanding of metabolic interactions between small symbiotic animals and bacteria or parasitic eukaryotes that reside within their bodies is extremely limited. This gap in knowledge originates from a methodological challenge, namely to connect histological changes in host tissues induced by beneficial and parasitic (micro)organisms to the underlying metabolites. We addressed this challenge and developed chemo-histo-tomography (CHEMHIST), a culture-independent approach to connect anatomic structure and metabolic function in millimeter-sized symbiotic animals.

The literature demonstrates links between socioenvironmental characteristics, dysregulation of the stress response system, and PTSD, though few studies integrate these factors in one model. In a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data collected by the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW), structural equation modeling evaluated the relationships between socioenvironmental stress, cumulative biological risk (CBR), and PTSD symptom severity. The model hypothesized that exposure to socioenvironmental stress was associated with PTSD and that this relationship is mediated by increased CBR.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have been recently revised and implemented for well-established response criteria to standard first-line ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy at 12 months after treatment initiation for the early identification of high-risk patients with inadequate treatment responses who may require treatment modification. However, there are only very limited data concerning the real-world clinical management of patients with PBC in Germany.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate response rates to standard first-line UDCA therapy and subsequent Second-line treatment regimens in a large cohort of well-characterized patients with PBC from 10 independent hepatological referral centers in Germany prior to the introduction of obeticholic acid as a licensed second-line treatment option.

Linear and generalized linear models are used extensively in many scientific fields, to model observed data and as the basis for hypothesis tests. The use of such models requires specification of a design matrix, and subsequent formulation of contrasts representing scientific hypotheses of interest. Proper execution of these steps requires a thorough understanding of the meaning of the individual coefficients, and is a frequent source of uncertainty for end users.

Coherent Electron Optics with Ballistically Coupled Quantum Point Contacts.

Phys Rev Lett

September 2020

Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik, Leibniz-Institut im Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V., Hausvogteiplatz 5-7, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

The realization of integrated quantum circuits requires precise on-chip control of charge carriers. Aiming at the coherent coupling of distant nanostructures at zero magnetic field, here we study the ballistic electron transport through two quantum point contacts (QPCs) in series in a three terminal configuration. We enhance the coupling between the QPCs by electrostatic focusing using a field effect lens.
