Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the causes of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with a focus on sex differences, obesity, and genetic factors using inbred mouse strains.
  • - Male mice displayed higher levels of hepatic triglycerides on a high-fat, high-sugar diet, while differences in body fat percentage were the strongest predictors of liver fat accumulation, explaining 30% of variation in both sexes.
  • - Genetic mapping revealed significant differences in how male and female mice regulate liver fat, with gonadectomy affecting male mice more; results suggest sex-linked variations in body fat distribution, HDL levels, and genetics play a role in NAFLD.

Among immunocompromised individuals, members of the human Herpesviridae family are frequently encountered pathogens. Cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and human herpesvirus-6, -7, and -8 all establish latency after infection and can reactivate during periods of immunosuppression, leading to both direct and indirect adverse effects on the host including severe organ dysfunction as well as allograft rejection and loss after transplantation. While not all herpesviruses are primary respiratory pathogens, many of their manifestations include involvement of the respiratory tract.

In this study, we have identified cystathionine (CTH), a sulfur containing metabolite, to be selectively enriched in human breast cancer (HBC) tissues (∼50-100 pmoles/mg protein) compared with undetectable levels in normal breast tissues. The accumulation of CTH, specifically in HBC, was attributed to the overexpression of cystathionine beta synthase (CBS), its synthesizing enzyme, and the undetectable levels of its downstream metabolizing enzyme, cystathionine gamma lyase (CGL). Interestingly both CBS and CGL could not be detected in normal breast tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how red and processed meat consumption affects survival rates in patients with upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) and lung cancers.
  • Analyzing data from a case-control study in Los Angeles County, researchers found that higher red and processed meat intake was linked to increased mortality in UADT cancer patients.
  • The results indicated a significant association for UADT cases, with a weaker correlation noted for lung cancer, suggesting diet may play a role in cancer outcomes.

Ferumoxytol is an ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) particle that is FDA-approved for parenteral treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease. Because of the association between gadolinium-based contrast agents and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with severe chronic kidney disease, we sought to evaluate the diagnostic role of ferumoxytol-enhanced MR venography in children with chronic kidney disease. Twenty children underwent 22 high-resolution ferumoxytol-enhanced MR venography examinations at 3.

Cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) is an enzyme in the transulfuration pathway that can catalyze the condensation of homocysteine (Hcy) and cysteine (Cys) to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and cystathionine (CTH). CBS-derived H2S is important in angiogenesis and drug resistance in colon and ovarian cancers, respectively. However, the mechanisms by which cancer cell-derived H2S is utilized by cancer cells as a protective agent against host-derived activated macrophages are not yet investigated.

Here we show that the Ino80 chromatin remodeling complex (Ino80C) directly prevents euchromatin from invading transcriptionally silent chromatin within intergenic regions and at the border of euchromatin and heterochromatin. Deletion of Ino80C subunits leads to increased H3K79 methylation and noncoding RNA polymerase II (Pol II) transcription centered at the Ino80C-binding sites. The effect of Ino80C is direct, as it blocks H3K79 methylation by Dot1 in vitro.
