Preclinical imaging studies of posttraumatic epileptogenesis (PTE) have largely been proof-of-concept studies with limited animal numbers, and thus lack the statistical power for biomarker discovery. Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therapy (EpiBioS4Rx) is a pioneering multicenter trial investigating preclinical imaging biomarkers of PTE. EpiBios4Rx faced the issue of harmonizing the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures and imaging data metrics prior to its execution.

Cisplatin resistance remains a major impediment to effective treatment of ovarian cancer. Despite initial platinum responsiveness, thiol-containing peptides and proteins, glutathione (GSH) and metallothionein (MT), bind and inactivate cisplatin in cancer cells. Indeed, high levels of GSH and MT in ovarian cancers impart cisplatin resistance and are predictive of poor prognosis.

Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a major neurodegenerative disease accounting for 20% of symptomatic epilepsy cases. A long latent phase offers a potential window for prophylactic treatment strategies to prevent epilepsy onset, provided that the patients at risk can be identified. Some promising imaging biomarker candidates for posttraumatic epileptogenesis have been identified, but more are required to provide the specificity and sensitivity for accurate prediction.

Background And Purpose: Our aim was to evaluate whether serial administration of the macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agent gadoteridol in children is associated with T1-weighted hyperintensity within the dentate nucleus, an imaging surrogate for gadolinium deposition.
Materials And Methods: We identified a retrospective cohort of 10 patients younger than 18 years of age who underwent between 4 and 8 gadoteridol-enhanced MR imaging examinations of the brain from 2016 to 2017. For comparison, we identified a retrospective cohort of 9 pediatric patients who each underwent 6 gadodiamide-enhanced MR imaging examinations.

Background And Aims: Separate randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed water exchange (WE) colonoscopy outperformed other techniques in minimizing insertion pain and optimizing adenoma detection rate. Longer insertion time required for removal of infused water, residual air, and feces might have hampered its wider adoption. We evaluate the impact of WE compared with air or carbon dioxide insufflation (GAS) on room turnaround efficiency measured by cecal intubation, withdrawal, and total procedure times.

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common cyanotic congenital heart defect. It involves anatomical abnormalities that change the normal flow of blood through the heart resulting in low oxygenation. Although not all of the underlying causes of TOF are completely understood, the disease has been associated with varying genetic etiologies including chromosomal abnormalities and Mendelian disorders, but can also occur as an isolated defect.

Pulmonary edema increasingly is recognized as a perioperative complication affecting outcome. Several risk factors have been identified, including those of cardiogenic origin, such as heart failure or excessive fluid administration, and those related to increased pulmonary capillary permeability secondary to inflammatory mediators. Effective treatment requires prompt diagnosis and early intervention.

The oncogenic activation of the ETS-related gene () due to gene fusions is present in over half of prostate cancers in Western countries. Because of its high incidence and oncogenic role, ERG and components of ERG network have emerged as potential drug targets for prostate cancer. Utilizing gene expression datasets, from matched normal and prostate tumor epithelial cells, an association of NOTCH transcription factors with expression status was identified, confirming that factors are direct transcriptional targets of ERG.

Alcohol (EtOH) intoxication causes changes in the rodent brain -aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAR) subunit composition and function, playing a crucial role in EtOH withdrawal symptoms and dependence. Building evidence indicates that withdrawal from acute EtOH and chronic intermittent EtOH (CIE) results in decreased EtOH-enhanced GABAR subunit-containing extrasynaptic and EtOH-insensitive 12 subtype synaptic GABARs but increased synaptic 42 subtype, and increased EtOH sensitivity of GABAR miniature postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) correlated with EtOH dependence. Here we demonstrate that after acute EtOH intoxication and CIE, upregulation of hippocampal 42 subtypes, as well as increased cell-surface levels of GABAR 2 and 1 subunits, along with increased 211 GABAR pentamers in hippocampal slices using cell-surface cross-linking, followed by Western blot and coimmunoprecipitation.

Background: Identifying patients with obstructive coronary artery disease can be challenging for primary care physicians. Advances in precision medicine may help augment clinical tools and redefine the paradigm for evaluating coronary artery disease in the outpatient setting. A blood-based age/sex/gene expression score (ASGES) incorporating key features of precision medicine has shown clinical validity with a 96% negative predictive value and 89% sensitivity in estimating a symptomatic patient's current likelihood of obstructive coronary artery disease.

Accumulating evidence suggests that abnormal levels of homocysteine are associated with vascular dysfunctions, cancer cell proliferation and various neurodegenerative diseases. With respect to the latter, a perturbation of transition metal homeostasis and an inhibition of catalase bioactivity have been reported. Herein, we report on some of the molecular bases for the cellular toxicity of homocysteine and demonstrate that it induces the formation of sulfcatalase, an irreversible inactive state of the enzyme, without the intervention of hydrogen sulfide.
