Recent advances in the understanding of underlying molecular signaling mechanisms of cancer susceptibility and progression have led to an increase in the use of targeted therapies for cancer treatment. Despite improvements in survival with new treatment options in oncology, resistance to therapy is a major obstacle to the long-term effectiveness of targeted agents in metastatic cancer treatment, culminating in insensitivity to treatment and tumor outgrowth. Adaptive resistance can play an important role in primary and upfront resistance to therapy as well as in secondary or acquired resistance.

Background: In developing countries, esophageal burns are quite common. They are caused by the ingestion of corrosive substances that may lead to esophageal perforation in the short-term and stricture formation in the long-term. Prevention of stricture progression in the esophagus is the main aim of the treatment for corrosive esophageal burns.

Objective: To investigate the susceptibility and specificity of the phenotypic methods to determine plasmidmediated AmpC.

Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted at Duzce University Faculty of Medicine, Microbiology Laboratory from January 2015 to June 2016, and comprised Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia isolates intermediate susceptible or resistant to cefoxitine. Combined disk diffusion test, double disc synergy test, agar gradient test and polymerase chain reaction were used to detect plasmid-mediated AmpC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of lycopene on a hyperoxia-induced lung injury model in rat pups. Full-term rat pups were included in the study 12-24 h after delivery. The pups were separated into 4 groups: normoxia control (NC), hyperoxia control (HC), hyperoxia + lycopene (HL), and normoxia lycopene (NL).

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of pre-ablative stimulated thyroglobulin (Tg) and Tg/thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) to identify lymph node metastasis (LNM) or distant metastases (DM) prior to radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment.

Methods: Patients without metastasis were included in group 1 (n=100), those with LNM were included in group 2 (n=83), and those with DM constituted group 3 (n=23). Tg and TSH values were measured approximately 4 hours prior to RAI ablation therapy.

Objective: Chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the most common etiologic reason for upper airway obstruction in childhood and has been found to be associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders and poor quality of life. In the present study, we investigated the impact of adenotonsillectomy on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, sleep problems, and quality of life in children with chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Methods: The parents of children with chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy filled out the Conners's Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short form (CPRS-RS), Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Parent version (PedsQL-P) before and six months after adenotonsillectomy.

Introduction: Thyroid hormones are essential for the normal development, differentiation, metabolic balance and physiological function of all tissues. Mean platelet volume (MPV) indicates mean platelet size and reflects platelet production rate and stimulation. Increased platelet size has been observed in association with known cardiovascular risk factors.

Fragmented QRS (fQRS) detected on a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) has been demonstrated to be a marker of myocardial fibrosis. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a protein which plays an important role in fibro-inflammatory processes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ICAM-1 levels and the presence of fQRS in hypertensive patients.

Background: A toxin-antitoxin (TA) system is a set of two or more closely linked genes that are encoded as a poison and a corresponding antidote on a protein. In typical bacterial physiology, an antitoxin binds to a toxin and neutralizes it, which prevents the bacterium from killing itself. We aimed to determine whether and isolates have TA genes and to investigate whether there is a relationship between the expression levels of TA genes and resistance to antibiotics.

Background: Ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) may trigger lethal ventricular arrhythmias in patients with structural heart disease. However, this role of VPCs in healthy people remains controversial once that not enough clinical trials are available. Recently, some myocardial repolarization markers, such as Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc ratios, have been reported to be useful for predicting lethal ventricular arrhythmias in various clinical disorders without structural heart disease.
