Objective: This study aimed to determine the reliability levels of the radiographic union scale for tibial fractures (RUST) and the modified version of the system, mRUST, for femoral shaft fractures in pediatric and adult patients and to evaluate the value of the scores for total and each cortex in the decision making on fracture union.

Methods: A total of 15 orthopedic surgeons scored the radiographs of 24 pediatric and 24 adult patients with femoral shaft fractures that were obtained at 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 postoperative weeks treated with elastic stable intramedullary nail in pediatric patients and locked intramedullary nail in adult patients using the RUST and mRUST scores. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used in the evaluation of reliability of the RUST and mRUST scores.

Phase I study on the safety and preliminary efficacy of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

World J Exp Med

March 2021

Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research and Manufacturing (LivMedCell), Liv Hospital, İstanbul 34340, Turkey.

Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the adult as well as in the neonate, with limited options for treatment and significant dysfunctionality.

Aim: To investigate the safety and preliminary efficacy of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in HIE patients.

Methods: Patients who had HIE for at least 6 mo along with significant dysfunction and disability were included.

Introduction: Smoking increases the risk of arrhythmia. QT dispersion (QTd) is an important indicator for the determination of ventricular arrhythmia. In this study, we aimed to determine the arrhythmia risk by evaluating QTd in smokers and to assess the relationship between the level of nicotine addiction and carbon monoxide (CO) level in the expiratory air.

Background: To compare the efficacy, functional outcome, and complication frequency of splinting and external fixation in the initial treatment of ankle fracture-dislocations.

Method: Ankles with poor soft tissue conditions who underwent temporary stabilization due to using a splint or external fixator due to an ankle fracture-dislocation between 2012 and 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Ankles were divided into two groups as the splint (n=69) and external fixator (n=48).

Objective: This study aimed to introduce an alternative pre-biopsy confirmation technique that combines sonography-guided intra-lesional contrast injections and single non-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence in order to identify sonographic correlates of incidentally detected breast MRI lesions which were occult on primary ultrasonography (USG) and mammography examination.

Materials And Methods: From May 2014 through May 2015, a total of 37 incidental breast lesions of 37 patients, which were detected by breast MRI, were evaluated with targeted second look ultrasound (SLUS). The suspected lesion on USG was marked with a gadolinium-based contrast agent under USG guidance.

Small Size Autograft versus Large Size Allograft in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Clin Orthop Surg

March 2021

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Gaziosmanpasa Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: A small autograft diameter negatively affects functional outcomes, knee stability, and the risk of rerupture after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, whereas the strength of allograft decreases over time. Therefore, it is not clear whether the use of smaller autografts or the use of larger allografts in ACL yields better results. The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of smaller autografts and larger allografts for ACL reconstruction.

Objectives: The portal vein variation type significantly affects the outcome of transplant surgery, hepatectomies, and interventional radiological procedures. To reveal variation types, especially rare types, we used high-technology multidetector computed tomography.

Materials And Methods: We evaluated multiphase abdominal multidetector computed tomography scans of 278 consecutive patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that fibromyalgia patients feel older than their actual age and to investigate the associations between their subjective age and clinical parameters such as cognition, depression, anxiety, widespread pain, sleep, and fatigue.

Methods: This observational cross-sectional study enrolled 176 patients with newly diagnosed fibromyalgia and 89 controls. Subjective age was determined by asking the question "how old do you feel?", and the difference between the physiological and subjective ages was calculated.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate visual function and changes in the central macular thickness of patients with unresponsive neovascular age-related macular degeneration who were switched from ranibizumab (Lucentis®) to aflibercept (Eylea®) treatment at 30 months.

Methods: This retrospective study examined patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration who were switched to aflibercept after ≥6 previous intravitreal ranibizumab injections at 4- to 8-week intervals. All patients were switched to intravitreal aflibercept (2.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of preoperative fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) by the postthyroidectomy pathology results.

Method: Seven hundred and ninety-five patients with FNAB and following thyroid operations which have been performed between April 2008 and December 2019 were included in this study. By comparing the results of the FNAB and final pathologies, the specificity, sensitivity, FNR, false positivity ratio (FPR), accuracy and also the effect of nodule diameter on these have been evaluated.

Purpose: There is scarce data on the impact of the presence of mediastinal lymphadenopathy on the prognosis of coronavirus-disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to investigate whether its presence is associated with increased risk for 30-day mortality in a large group of patients with COVID-19.

Method: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 650 adult laboratory-confirmed hospitalized COVID-19 patients were included.

Aim: The logistic clinical SYNTAX score (log CSS) is a combined risk scoring system including clinical and anatomic parameters; it has been found to be effective for the prediction of mortality in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in the primary treatment of acute myocardial infarction is still debated. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the utility of log CSS to stratify the risk of in-hospital mortality in acute STEMI patients undergoing emergent CABG for primary revascularization.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how haemolysis affects ethanol testing using the Synchron assay with an AU680 autoanalyser.
  • Samples were taken from 20 volunteers, with one set experiencing mechanical haemolysis, and then tested for ethanol concentrations.
  • Results showed that while haemolysis caused negative interference in ethanol measurement, the total error values remained within acceptable limits for free hemoglobin up to 10 g/L, indicating that ethanol levels can still be accurately assessed in these samples.

June 2022

Department of Pathology, Gaziosmanpasa Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: We assessed the validity of using serum pepsinogen tests (sPGTs) to differentiate autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) from environmental atrophic gastritis (EAG). We also investigated the correlation and prognostic value between disease stage, according to Operative Link for Gastritis Assessment (OLGA)/Operative Link on Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia Assessment (OLGIM), and sPGT results in patients with gastric atrophy.

Methods: We enroled 115 patients in this prospective study: 95 with atrophic gastritis (16 with AAG and 79 with EAG) and 20 non-atrophic gastritis.
