Purpose: The limitations in cancer treatment and the inadequacy of classical methods have made it necessary to discover therapeutics in cancer treatment. The cytotoxicity of thymoquinone, which has quite different properties in terms of biological activities, in ovarian cancer cells, and the changes in the expression levels of apoptotic genes (p53/caspase-3 (casp-3)) were investigated.

Methods: In the study, thymoquinone (5, 50, 100, 250 and 500 µM and 24, 48, 72 hours) were applied to ovarian adenocarcinoma cancer cell line (OVCAR3), at different concentrations.

Gremlin-1 is associated with lung disease and plays a role in the initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This suggests that Gremlin-1 may be associated with lung involvement in COVID-19 and poor clinical outcomes and warrants further investigation. This prospective, cross-sectional, single-blind study was the first to investigate Gremlin-1 levels in COVID-19 patients and whether Gremlin-1 levels could be used to predict and guide clinical follow-up in outpatients and inpatients.

Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) systems using ionizing radiation may increase the risk of secondary cancer and normal tissue toxicity due to additional radiation exposure caused by large field sizes or repeated scans during X-ray imaging. As an alternative to these modalities, surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) systems which do not employ ionizing radiation have been developed. This study presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of the Varian Identify SGRT system by using an anthropomorphic Alderson Rando phantom in three different aspects: (a) the accuracy and reproducibility of the system in different regions of interest (ROI) for varying couch displacements, (b) the setup accuracy of the system for patient positioning based on different computed tomography (CT) slice thicknesses, and (c) the potential influence of obstructing SGRT cameras by the gantry on the system's overall accuracy and reproducibility.

Although it is known that the relative abundance of Akkermansia, a bacterial genus commonly associated with health, increases in the gut microbiota of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, the exact reason for this increase remains unclear. This study was aimed to identify potential changes in Akkermansia within the gut microbiota of PD patients in Türkiye. For this purpose, shotgun metagenomics and a novel Akkermansia genus-specific amplicon sequencing technique was used to investigate the presence of specific Akkermansia strains associated with cognitive impairment (CI) stages in PD and to examine potential genes within these strains.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to describe the retinal characteristics (phenotypes) of patients with CLN-related retinal dystrophy at two medical centers in the U.S. and Brazil, comparing findings to existing literature.
  • - Eleven patients with verified variants in CLN genes underwent various eye examinations, leading to the identification of five new genetic variants and four new phenotypic presentations linked to previously known gene variants.
  • - The research highlighted significant variations in symptoms among patients with the same genetic mutations, indicating that understanding the relationship between genotype and phenotype remains complex, necessitating further research for better patient guidance.

Background:  Complex underlying mechanisms consisting of cytotoxic, excitotoxic, and inflammatory effects of intraparenchymal hemorrhage (ICH) are responsible for the highly detrimental effects on brain tissue. Oxidative stress also plays a significant role in brain damage after ICH; however, it is less important than other factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress parameters malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant-reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CT) activities in operated and nonoperated patients with spontaneous ICH.
