Recent studies show that oxidative stress has an important role in the etiology of autism. In our study, Nrf2, which is the main regulator of cellular antioxidant response, and Keap1 and Gsk-3β, which are the main proteins that regulate this pathway, were compared between children with autism and healthy controls. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first in which Nrf2, Keap1 and Gsk-3β levels were evaluated together in children with ASD.

Background: Bleeding is the most common adverse event in those with cardiovascular (CV) disease receiving antithrombotic therapy, and it most commonly occurs in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Clinicians often dismiss bleeding as an adverse event that is reversible with effective antithrombotic therapy, but bleeding is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, most likely mediated through an increased risk of CV events. Reducing the burden of bleeding requires knowledge of the potentially modifiable risk factors for bleeding and the potentially modifiable risk factors for adverse outcomes after bleeding.

Tyrosinemia type I is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Fulminant onset of liver failure can occur in the first few months of life. Because all of the clotting factors are produced exclusively in the liver except factor VIII, coagulation abnormalities are very common in patients with severe liver disease.

Intramedullary nailing, which is preferred in tibial diaphyseal fractures, is also frequently used in distal third tibial fractures. Various angular deformities, including varus/valgus deformity, may be observed during postintramedullary nailing. Orthopedic surgeons use several methods to prevent this problem.

The increased rate of antimicrobial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii made it necessary to reconsider old antibiotics such as polymyxins and develop new drugs such as tigecycline. The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility rates of multi-drug resistant A. baumannii clinical isolates to colistin, polymyxin B, and tigecycline by three different methods in microbiology laboratory of Gaziantep University Research Hospital, between September 2006 and April 2008.

Laboratory diagnosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is based on the detection of anti-HCV antibodies by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or chemiluminescence immunoassay (CIA) techniques. However, a consensus related to the problem of low titer (Serum/Cut-off; S/C= 1.0) anti-HCV antibodies is still lacking.

The aim of this study was to identify the Enterococcus spp. and to determine their vancomycin-resistance profiles, in the samples collected from the patients who were described as risky groups for vancomycin-resistant enterococcal (VRE) colonization, in scope of a survey study carried out in our hospital for the first time. Rectal swab samples were taken once in a month from a total of 180 patients who were hospitalized in the Surgery and Intensive Care Units, adult Oncology-Hematology and Pediatric Oncology Units between March-December 2006.

[Evaluation of the methods used for the serologic diagnosis of brucellosis].

Mikrobiyol Bul

April 2002

Gaziantep Universitesi Tip Fakültesi, Infeksiyon Hastaliklari ve Klinik Bakteriyoloji Anabilim Dali, Gaziantep.

Serological tests are the most widely used methods for the diagnosis of Brucella infections, since bacterial isolation techniques are time consuming. The conventional serological methods are the tube and slide agglutination tests, however enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) have gained importance recently as rapid diagnostic techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of standard tube agglutination (STA, Wright test), slide agglutination (Rose-Bengal, RB) and ELISA-IgG and -IgM methods, in the serological diagnosis of brucellosis.

We studied 77 women divided into postmenopausal osteoporotic and premenopausal and postmenopausal non-osteoporotic groups in order to evaluate bone metabolism and diagnostic value of biochemical markers of bone turnover in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Postmenopausal osteoporotic (n: 40), postmenopausal non-osteoporotic (n: 24) and premenopausal non-osteoporotic (n: 13) groups were defined according to bone mineral density (BMD) scores obtained with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Urinary deoxy-pyridinoline (Dpd), pyridinoline (Pyd), serum total alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), osteocalcin (BGP), total calcium, phosphorus, and creatinine levels were determined.
