Objectives: Identifying early predictors of dialysis requirements in earthquake-related injuries is crucial for optimal resource allocation and timely intervention. This study aimed to develop a predictive scoring system, named SAFE-QUAKE (Seismic Assessment of Kidney Function to Rule Out Dialysis Requirement), to identify patients at high risk of developing acute kidney injury (AKI) and requiring dialysis.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 205 patients presenting with earthquake-related injuries.

Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD) accompanies severe asthma in about 15% of the patients and may adversely affect the prognosis. Omalizumab and mepolizumab are biologics used in patients with severe asthma. The objective of this study is to assess the respiratory improvements, after these biologics in severe asthmatic patients stratifed by the presence of concomitant Non-erosive reflux disease (N-ERD) and the effect of omalizumab and mepolizumab in severe asthmatics with N-ERD.

PeerJ

September 2023

Department of Emergency Medicine, Uskudar University, Faculty of Medicine, İstanbul, Turkey.

Background: Understanding mortality risk factors is critical to reducing mortality among elderly hip fracture patients. To investigate the effects of admission and post-operative levels of distribution width of red blood cells (RDW), albumin, and RDW/albumin (RA) ratio on predicting 1-year mortality following hip fracture surgery.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 275 elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery in a tertiary hospital between January 2018 and January 2022.

Aim    Coronary artery tortuosity is a common coronary angiographic finding. This tortuosity can cause myocardial ischemia even in the absence of significant coronary artery stenosis. Our aim was to compare the demographic, clinical and echocardiographic features of patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) and with and without coronary artery tortuosity.

Background: The Uric acid/Albumin ratio (UAR) has recently been identified as a prominent marker in cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we aimed to reveal the effect of UAR on coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients by comparing it with conventional inflammation-based markers.

Methods: In this study, 415 consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography for stable angina pectoris and were found to have chronic total occlusion in at least one coronary artery were retrospectively included.

A Rare Case of Vasospasm Presenting with Acute Coronary Syndrome and Leading to Total Occlusion.

Turk Kardiyol Dern Ars

September 2023

Department of Cardiology, Health Science University, Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital, Diyarbakır, Türkiye.

Coronary vasospasm is characterized by transient and reversible vasoconstriction that can cause myocardial ischemia. Patients with acute coronary syndrome may present to the emergency department with various clinical features, including mortal arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. Coronary angiography was performed in a 61-year-old male patient with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome due to recurrent angina attacks and dynamic changes in electrocardiography.

Infants who undergo cardiac surgery frequently have complications that may advance to multiple organ failure and result in mortality. This study aims to compare three different multiple organ dysfunction scoring systems: the Neonatal Multiple Organ Dysfunction (NEOMOD) score, the modified NEOMOD score, and the Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction-2 (PELOD-2) score in predicting postoperative 30-day mortality in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery. This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2019 and February 2021 in a single unit on neonates operated on due to congenital heart disease in the first 28 days of life.

Objective: In this study, we investigated the relationship between age, creatinine, and left ventricular ejection fraction risk score and the severity of coronary lesions detected by applying fractional flow reserve in the patient group presenting with chronic coronary syndrome. Also, we presented long-term follow-up results in patients whose age, creatinine, and left ventricular ejection fraction score was evaluated by the fractional flow reserve procedure.

Methods: This study was planned retrospectively and in two centers.

Introduction: Malnutrition is defined as a pathological condition arising from deficient or imbalanced intake of nutritional elements. Factors such as increasing metabolic demands during the disease course in the hospitalized patients and inadequate calorie intake increase the risk of malnutrition. The aim of the present study is to evaluate nutritional status of patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) in Turkey, examine the effect of nutrition on the treatment process and draw attention to the need for regulating nutritional support of patients while continuing existing therapies.

Background: In this study, we investigated whether there is a higher incidence of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) procedures related complications in older (≥ 75 years) than in younger (< 75 years) patients.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who had undergone CIED procedures (de novo implantation, system upgrade, generator substitution, pocket revision or lead replacement) at two heart centers in Turkey between January 2011 and May 2023. The primary composite endpoint included clinically significant hematoma (CSH), pericardial effusion or tamponade, pneumothorax, and infection related to the device system.

Objective: We compared the diagnostic accuracies of Ga FAPI-04 PET/CT and F-FDG PET/CT for detecting liver metastases (LMs) in patients with different cancer types.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 63 patients with liver lesions who underwent F-FDG PET/CT and Ga-FAPI-04 PET/CT between May 2020 and May 2022. Patients with histopathologically confirmed primary diagnoses, data that could be accessed retrospectively, liver lesions confirmed by biopsy over at least 3-6 months of follow-up (via ultrasonography, CT, magnetic resonance imaging, PET/CT, or laboratory tests) were included.

The myocardial performance index (MPI) is an index that shows both systolic and diastolic functions of the ventricle. Presystolic wave (PSW) is a late diastolic wave encountered in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and is associated with increased left ventricular stiffness and decreased left ventricular compliance. In our study, MPI was compared between patients with metabolic syndrome and normal patients, and we also investigated whether PSW could predict subclinical left ventricular dysfunction (SCLVD) in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the clinical and laboratory findings that can be used to predict central precocious puberty (CPP) in cases whose breast development started before the age of 8.

Materials And Methods: The chronological age, anthropometric measurements, bone age (BA), hormone test results and pelvic ultrasonography findings of the cases were recorded. Those with a peak luteinizing hormone (LH) level of ≥5 IU/L in the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test were classified as CPP and those with a peak LH level of <5 IU/L were classified as prepubertal cases.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether 25 µg/day dose of triiodothyronine (T3) can also suppress thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level, as well as the routine dose of 50-100 µg/day in T3 suppression test, which is used to the distinguish between resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) and TSH secreting pituitary adenoma.

Methods: In this prospective study, 26 patients with genetically proven RTH were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 comprised 13 patients who were administered 50-100 µg/day T3 for 3-9 days, while Group 2 also comprised 13 patients who were administered 25 µg/day T3 for 7 days for T3 suppression test. The two groups' responses to T3 suppression tests were compared.
