Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the need for better management of healthcare costs, especially in specialized hospital settings like intensive care units (ICUs), due to limited GDP allocation for health.
  • - Researchers compared the costs associated with anaesthesiology and internal medicine ICUs for 855 patients treated over a 20-month period at Gazi University Hospital.
  • - Results showed significant cost differences between the two ICU types, indicating that the Social Security Institution (SSI) should adjust their reimbursement policies to better cover intensive care expenses.

Adv Clin Chem

June 2016

Department of Pediatrics, Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Gazi Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Inborn errors of metabolism are single gene disorders resulting from the defects in the biochemical pathways of the body. Although these disorders are individually rare, collectively they account for a significant portion of childhood disability and deaths. Most of the disorders are inherited as autosomal recessive whereas autosomal dominant and X-linked disorders are also present.

Clinical Results of Meniscal Repair Using Submeniscal Horizontal Sutures.

Arch Bone Jt Surg

July 2015

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Shahid Gazi Hospital, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran.

Background: Parts of the implants placed over the meniscus during meniscal repair can wear down the cartilage in the contact zones and cause chronic synovitis. Placing horizontal sutures under the meniscus may overcome this potential hazard. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the midterm results of arthroscopic meniscal repair using submeniscally placed out-in horizontal sutures.

Aims: In some pulmonary hypertension (PH) patients, we noted a motion pattern where the right ventricular (RV) apex is pulled towards to left ventricle (LV) during systole, caused by traction from the LV ('apical traction', AT). Herein, we characterize patients with AT to investigate its prognostic significance.

Methods And Results: Echocardiograms of 62 pre-capillary PH patients (42 females, age 61 ± 15 years) were retrospectively analysed.

Malign melanoma of the nasal cavity that arises at such an unusual location is an exceptional case only occasionally mentioned in the literature. An amelanotic form, which is an uncommon type for this malignancy, also has an unusual radiological appearence from the classic melanotic form. We report here the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a 46-year-old man who had a nasal cavity mass diagnosed as an amelanotic malign melanoma and discuss the importance of differential diagnosis with such an unusual radiological manifestation in this location.

Ketamine is toxic to chondrocyte cell cultures.

Bone Joint J

July 2014

Gazi University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation, 06200 Ankara, Turkey.

Ketamine has been used in combination with a variety of other agents for intra-articular analgesia, with promising results. However, although it has been shown to be toxic to various types of cell, there is no available information on the effects of ketamine on chondrocytes. We conducted a prospective randomised controlled study to evaluate the effects of ketamine on cultured chondrocytes isolated from rat articular cartilage.

Objectives: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic upper respiratory tract disease that inflames the mucous membranes of the nose and occurs when circulating inflammatory cells including eosinophils and basophils migrate to and accumulate in the inflammation area by passing through the interstitium and capillary walls. To pass through these barriers, the inflammatory cells degrade extracellular matrix proteins. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) released by inflammatory cells mediate the degradation of these proteins.

April 2013

Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Metabolism and Nutrition, Gazi Hospital, 10th Floor, Beşevler, Ankara, 06540, Turkey.

Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSD Ia) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the G6PC gene encoding glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), a key enzyme for the maintenance of glucose homeostasis. Molecular analysis is a reliable and accurate way of diagnosing GSD Ia without to need for invasive liver biopsies for enzyme tests. In some ethnic groups and geographic regions, allelic homogeneity was detected in GSD Ia.

Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common cyanotic congenital heart disease with decreased pulmonary blood flow. Right-to-left shunt and infundibular pulmonary stenosis in this disease lead to a decrease in arterial O(2) saturation. Hypoxia is a strong stimulus for angiogenesis; however, the reason for insufficiency in the pulmonary vascular growth in patients despite chronic arterial hypoxia is still not known.

A tender, pulsatile, bulging mass, about the size of an adult fist, was palpated around the left lower abdominal region. Diagnostic procedures showed a large low-density area around the PTFE graft and angiography revealed a patent graft with no anastomotic leakage.

Department of Neurology, Gazi Hospital and Neuropsychiatry Centre, Gazi University, Besevler, Ankara, Turkey.

Headache treatment has been based primarily on experiences with non-specific drugs such as analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or drugs that were originally developed to treat other diseases, such as beta-blockers and anticonvulsant medications. A better understanding of the basic pathophysiological mechanisms of migraine and other types of headache has led to the development over the past two decades of more target-specific drugs. Since activation of the trigeminovascular system and neurogenic inflammation are thought to play important roles in migraine pathophysiology, experimental studies modeling those events successfully predicted targets for selective development of pharmacological agents to treat migraine.

Introduction: Erectile dysfunction has usually been treated by a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor in men, especially in the past decade. Although sildenafil and vardenafil are widely used, there is a high percentage of people who do not respond to these drugs. This study was performed in order to evaluate the efficacy of the lastly presented phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, tadalafil, in nonresponder group of patients to sildenafil and vardenafil.
