Purpose: Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) typically presents with urologic symptoms and abnormal imaging findings. However, some patients present with normal conus medullaris level and filum terminale appearance on MRI. This research seeks to assess the intended surgical results in this particular group of TCS patients who do not present with urologic complaints, under the premise that the surgical approach goes a long way in preventing the onset of urologic abnormalities.

Objective: Subcentimeter papillary thyroid carcinoma (sPTC), also known as papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, is associated with a good prognosis and low mortality risk. However, some sPTCs exhibit biologically aggressive characteristics. The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting the prognosis and aggressiveness of sPTC by considering the demographic characteristics of patients with sPTC and the pathologic characteristics of the tumors.

Background The human vertebral column generates movements under versatile, dynamic loads. Understanding how the spine reacts to these movements and loads is crucial for developing new spine implants and surgical treatments for intervertebral disc injuries. Mechanically uni-axial compression models have been extensively studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Intestinal metaplasia (IM) and Helicobacter pylori (HP) are identified as risk factors for developing gastric cancer (GC), with the WNT signaling pathway playing a significant role in this transition.
  • A study involving 104 patients analyzed the expression of WNT pathway-related genes in those with GC, IM, and control groups using advanced PCR methods.
  • Results showed that the genes RHOA, CSNK1A1, DVL2, FZD8, and LRP5 were overexpressed in GC and IM patients, particularly in those with metastasis or HP positivity, indicating these genes might serve as poor prognosis biomarkers for gastric cancer.

Objective: At present, there is no reliable indicator for dietary compliance and disease severity in patients with celiac disease (CD). The aim of this study is to evaluate mean platelet volume (MPV) level as a biomarker for detection of disease activation, dietary adherence, and assessment of disease severity.

Methods: Eighty-one patients with CD and 50 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study.

Introduction: Ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) is an antibody-drug conjugate and its survival advantage has been shown in advanced human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. However, clinical trials underrepresent patients ⩾65 years of age, leading to a lack of information in this population. We analyzed the real-world outcomes of older women who were treated with T-DM1 therapy.

Gastric cancer (GC) development can be attributed to several risk factors including atrophic gastritis (AG), intestinal metaplasia (IM), and the presence of Helicobacter pylori (HP). Also, histone modification is an epigenetic mechanism that plays a pivotal role in GC carcinogenesis. In this preliminary study, we aimed to describe the expression profiles of histone modification in the AG, IM, and GC patient groups.

Transfus Apher Sci

June 2017

Departments of Hematology, Medical Faculty, Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey. Electronic address:

Studies about leukocytapheresis have emerged with the need of search for alternatives to conventional treatment in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Leukocytapheresis is a novel non-pharmacologic approach for active ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), in which leukocytes are mechanically removed from the circulatory system. Patients with active IBD treated with leukocytapheresis using a Cellsorba E column between 2012 and 2015, were enrolled in Turkey.

Background: Infants presenting with lysosomal acid lipase deficiency have marked failure to thrive, diarrhea, massive hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, rapidly progressive liver disease, and death typically in the first 6 months of life; the only available potential treatment has been hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality in this population. The study objective was to evaluate safety and efficacy (including survival) of enzyme replacement with sebelipase alfa in infants with lysosomal acid lipase deficiency. This is an ongoing multicenter, open-label, phase 2/3 study conducted in nine countries.
