Reasonable design of bimetallic nanomaterials with support is beneficial to improve catalytic performance. This work reports a new kind of sodium sesquicarbonate-supporting FeO@Pt etching FeO@Pt@SiO, which exhibits highly efficient and stable catalytic reduction performance towards 4-NP. Sodium sesquicarbonate-supporting FeO@Pt has an interconnected one-dimensional network structure that provides sufficient channels for mass transfer.

The effectiveness of photocatalysts can be impacted by the high compounding efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which depends on the morphology of the photocatalyst. Here, a hydrangea-like N-ZnO/BiOI composite has been prepared for achieving efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under visible light. The N-ZnO/BiOI exhibits a high photocatalytic performance, degrading nearly 90% of TCH within 160 min.

To improve the poor stability of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), corn-straw biochar (BC) was used as a support for the synthesis of composites of nZVI-biochar (nZVI/BC) in different mass ratios. After a thorough characterization, the obtained nZVI/BC composite was used to remove hexavalent chromium [Cr(vi)] in an aquatic system under varying conditions including composite amount, Cr(vi) concentration, and pH. The obtained results show that the treatment efficiency varied in the following order: nZVI-BC (1 : 3) > nZVI-BC (1 : 5) > nZVI alone > BC alone.

Baitouweng Decoction is a famous Chinese medicinal decoction that has been used to treat diarrhea over thousands of years. In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of Baitouweng Decoction in the treatment of diarrhea. Wistar rats were randomly assigned into 4 groups: control group, dampness-heat diarrhea model group(modeling by complex factors including high-sugar and high-fat diet, improper diet, hot and humid environment, drinking and intraperitoneal injection of Escherichia coli), Baitouweng Decoction(3.

In this study, raw attapulgite and two aluminium hydroxide-modified attapulgites prepared using different aluminium salts were calcined at 600 °C to successfully prepare three novel adsorbents (C-ATP, C-ATP-SO and C-ATP-Cl). The three adsorbents were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Batch experiments revealed that the Cd(ii) adsorption capacity of the three adsorbents increased with increasing pH, increasing the initial concentration of Cd(ii) in solution, and with longer adsorption times.

For exploration of a type of synthetic antioxidant dietary fiber (ADF), porous starch (PS), modified by esterification with ferulic acid (FA) moieties, was synthesized successfully, with different degree of substitution (DS). The ester linkage of FA modified PS was confirmed by C solid-state NMR and FT-IR. XRD analysis showed that starch ferulates had a different crystal structure from the V-type pattern of native starch, suggesting that the starch gelled during the esterification reaction, then re-crystallized into a different structure.

The gelatinization of potato starch and the effect of NaCl on starch gelatinization were monitored successfully by H NMR spectroscopy. Variable temperature (VT) H NMR measurement, from 316 K to 340 K, was conducted on a suspension of potato starch and deuterium water as well as a mixture of potato starch, NaCl and deuterium water. The hydration level of starch was determined with the increase of temperature.

Proper pretreatment of herbal material containing essential oils (EOs) could enhance its volatile components release through either removing physical barriers or conquering chemical bonds and thereby improve hydrodistillation yield. In this regard, a trial pretreatment including pulverization, enzymolysis, short time microwave irradiation and acidolysis of seeds was integrated into the essential oil (EO) preparation to elevate the EO yield. On the basis of Plackett-Burman design analysis, three parameters (acidolysis duration, HCl concentration of acidolysis and sieving mesh) were significant for the EO preparation.

April 2016

College of Resources and Environmental Sciences/Gansu Provincial Key Lab of Aridland Crop Science, Gansu Agricultural University, Lanzhou 730070, China.

Studies were conducted to determine the role of 3-methylthioproprionic acid (MTPA) in the pathogenicity of potato stem canker, Rhizoctonia solani, and the concentrations required to inhibit growth of R. solani under laboratory and plant house-based conditions. The experiments were laid out in a completely randomized design with five treatments and five replications.
