Article Synopsis
  • Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a viral disease with a high fatality rate, characterized by symptoms like high fever and low blood platelet counts.
  • A study in Gangwon Province, Korea from 2019 to 2021 found that out of 776 suspected cases, 62 were confirmed SFTS, with an average death rate of 19.4%.
  • The research identified eight viral genotypes, with B2 (54.4%) and A (22.8%) being the most prevalent, and highlighted Hwacheon as the area with the highest incidence of the disease.

Anionic surfactants (AS) are becoming a major emerging contaminant of waters due to their widespread use in household and industrial products. The standard chloroform method for analysis of AS in water relies on chloroform extraction of a methylene blue active substance (MBAS), which contains ion pairs between methylene blue (MB) molecules (positively charged) and AS. Due to the poor extractability of chloroform, the procedure is complicated, time-consuming, and subject to anionic interferences.

Anionic surfactants (AS) are detrimental aquatic pollutants due to their well-characterized toxicity to aquatic organisms. The concentration of AS in aquatic environments is increasing because of their extensive use in many industries and households. The standard reference method for AS analysis is to determine a methylene blue active substance (MBAS) complex formed between AS and the methylene blue (MB) cation by using chloroform.

Survey of Zoonotic Trematode Metacercariae in Fish from Irrigation Canal of Togyo-jeosuji (Reservoir) in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Republic of Korea.

Korean J Parasitol

August 2021

Research Center for Fish Environmental Institute/ Wildlife and Fish Research & Conservation Center, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon 24341, Korea.

The infection status of zoonotic trematode metacercariae (ZTM) was investigated in total 568 freshwater fishes (19 species) from the irrigation canal of Togyo-jeosuji (Reservoir) in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, the Republic of Korea for 3 years (2018-2020). All fishes were examined using the artificial digestion method. The metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (CsMc) were detected in 180 (43.

Biologically produced sulfur as a novel adsorbent to remove Cd from aqueous solutions.

J Hazard Mater

October 2021

Department of Biological Environment, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon 24341, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Biological desulfurization processes of landfill gas yield an enormous amount of biologically produced S (BPS) as a byproduct. Capability of BPS to remove Cd from aqueous solutions was tested and its removal efficiency was compared to that of granular activated carbon (GAC). Kinetics of Cd removal by BPS was a two-stage process with an initial rapid adsorption showing 45% of initial Cd was removed within 5 min, followed by a slower adsorption.

Whole-genome sequencing of infectious agents enables the identification and characterization of emerging viruses. The MinION device is a portable sequencer that allows real-time sequencing in fields or hospitals. (Hantaan virus, HTNV), harbored by , causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and poses a critical public health threat worldwide.

Background: Hantaan orthohantavirus (Hantaan virus, HTNV), harbored by Apodemus agrarius (the striped field mouse), causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in humans. Viral genome-based surveillance at new expansion sites to identify HFRS risks plays a critical role in tracking the infection source of orthohantavirus outbreak. In the Republic of Korea (ROK), most studies demonstrated the serological prevalence and genetic diversity of orthohantaviruses collected from HFRS patients or rodents in Gyeonggi Province.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arthropod-borne virus mainly transmitted by species. A total of nine of the 16 imported ZIKV reported cases during the mosquito season in the Republic of Korea (ROK), following the return of local nationals from foreign ZIKV endemic countries, were surveyed for . Surveillance and vector control of , a potential vector of ZIKV, and related species are critical for reducing the potential for autochthonous transmission in the ROK.

Viral etiology of sporadic cases of parotitis among children in Korea during 2013-2014.

J Med Virol

January 2018

Division of Respiratory Viruses, Center for Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Cheongju-si, Chungbuk, Korea.

Recent years have seen a high incidence of mumps, which is generally diagnosed based on clinical features, especially parotitis, without laboratory confirmation in Korea. To better understand the epidemiology of mumps in Korean children, we investigated sporadic suspected mumps cases with parotitis. In total, 237 buccal swabs or throat swabs collected from children with parotitis who had been clinically diagnosed with mumps were tested using real-time PCR for the detection of six viruses (Epstein-Barr virus, Human herpesvirus 6, Mumps virus, Human parainfluenza virus-1, -2, -3, Human adenovirus, Human bocavirus).

A novel immunochromatographic test applied to a serological survey of Japanese encephalitis virus on pig farms in Korea.

PLoS One

April 2016

Division of Arboviruses, National Institute of Health, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea; Department of Biomedical Sciences, Graduate School of Hallym University, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, Korea.

Among vertebrate species, pigs are a major amplifying host of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and measuring their seroconversion is a reliable indicator of virus activity. Traditionally, the hemagglutination inhibition test has been used for serological testing in pigs; however, it has several limitations and, thus, a more efficient and reliable replacement test is required. In this study, we developed a new immunochromatographic test for detecting antibodies to JEV in pig serum within 15 min.
