Stents are increasingly used for coiling difficult aneurysms, to reduce the risk of recurrences, or to modify blood flow. Currently, available bifurcation aneurysm models are ill-suited to assess stent performance before clinical use. We designed a new animal model of wide-neck canine Y-type bifurcation aneurysm (such as middle cerebral artery (MCA) bifurcation) and previously reported one of T-type (such as basilar bifurcation).

  • - This study investigates ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a safe and effective alternative to surgery for managing low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC) in younger patients who prefer active surveillance.
  • - Conducted from 2018 to 2021, the trial included 100 patients with a median age of 42, revealing a high technical success rate, with 95.9% of ablative procedures leading to complete tumor disappearance and a low disease progression rate of 3.1% after a median follow-up of 30 months.
  • - Quality of life (QoL) measurements showed significant improvement in psychological and social aspects without negatively impacting physical QoL, suggesting RFA could

Purpose: The gene expression test (GET) was used to predict the response to chemotherapy and the recurrence risk. Several randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that some patients with node-positive disease can achieve favorable survival outcomes even without adjuvant chemotherapy. This study aimed to predict the results of Oncotype DX (Genomic Health) and MammaPrint (Agendia) using traditional clinicopathological factors.

  • Researchers analyzed data from 244 patients who underwent CAS, measuring LDL-C levels at 6 and 12 months post-procedure.
  • Results showed that higher LDL-C levels at 12 months are independently linked to an increased risk of both STI and ISR, suggesting a need for further research to determine ideal LDL-C targets for preventing these complications.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) hypersensitivity is common; however, many patients do not receive an accurate diagnosis and are using unnecessary alternative drugs or have medication restrictions.

Objective: To establish a protocol for provocation tests that can be performed safely and effectively at home to give patients an accurate diagnosis, whereas also delabeling NSAID hypersensitivity.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 147 patients with NSAID hypersensitivity.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Korean women, with a growing incidence, leading to the establishment of a national breast cancer database by the Korean Breast Cancer Society in 1996 for better understanding and management of the disease.
  • In 2018, over 28,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Korea, with a median age of 52, and the highest incidence occurring in the 40-49 age group, alongside an increase in early-stage cancer diagnoses.
  • The majority of cases were hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative, and the 5-year survival rate improved significantly from previous years, highlighting the need to update national databases for effective breast cancer management.

Purpose: To compare image resolution and depth between the microscope versus intracameral illumination images during 3D heads-up cataract surgery.

Methods: We collected 25 consecutive patients who had cataract surgery using the 3D viewing system. Based on bright, contrast, visibility, and color balance, the digital images (RGB color and three monochromes) extracted at the same point of the procedures were compared between the two illuminations.

Background: Postoperative lymphedema in breast cancer survivors is a serious complication that develops from axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Axillary reverse mapping (ARM) was recently introduced to reduce lymphedema. This pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility of preserving the ARM node using fluorescence imaging for patients at high risk of lymphedema.

Background: Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) and neuromuscular monitoring in anesthetic management are integral for endotracheal intubation, better visualization of the surgical field, and prevention of residual neuromuscular blockade and pulmonary complications. Sugammadex is a drug that reduces risk of residual neuromuscular blockade, with more rapid recovery compared to anticholinesterase. The purpose of this study was to investigate current usage status of NMBAs and antagonist with neuromuscular monitoring, among anesthesiologists in Korea.

Although various cases of neuralgia and its treatments have been reported, not enough evidence is present to recommend a single type of treatment as the most effective. The patient we have dealt with experienced significant interferences in his daily life due to chronic allodynia, but the symptom could not be resolved via previously reported treatments. We report a case of which a patient who presented infraorbital neuralgia after trauma was successfully treated by a novel treatment strategy.

Enhanced efficacy of radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma using a novel vascular disrupting agent, CKD-516.

Hepatol Int

September 2017

Bioimaging Center, Asan Institute for Life Sciences, Asan Medical Center, 88 Olympic-ro 43-gil, Songpa-gu, Seoul, 05505, Korea.

Background: CKD-516 is a novel vascular disrupting agent that shuts down intratumoral blood flow. We therefore hypothesized that concomitant administration of CKD-516 would enhance the therapeutic efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) by reducing heat sink effects. We assessed the effects of the combination of CKD-516 and RFA in a rat orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) model.
