Electronic address:

Introduction: Hyponatraemia has negative effects on cognitive function and gait stability and is a risk factor for osteoporosis, falls, fractures and hospital mortality. Acute hyponatraemia can lead to neurological dysfunction due to cerebral oedema. Its rapid correction can also be fatal, leading to osmotic demyelination syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • Additional monitoring medicines often have limited safety information due to rare adverse drug reactions not being detected in clinical trials, highlighting the need for real-world studies.
  • A study involving community pharmacists aimed to enhance safety, treatment adherence, and patient knowledge about these medicines in chronic disease patients, showing promising results over a six-month period.
  • Significant reductions in adverse drug reactions and patient non-adherence were achieved, alongside improved understanding of medicines and enhanced quality of life for patients.

Complete Blood Counts and Research Parameters in the Detection of Myelodysplastic Syndromes.

Diagnostics (Basel)

June 2024

Research Unit, Osakidetza Basque Health Service, Barrualde-Galdakao Integrated Health Organisation, Galdakao-Usansolo Hospital, 48960 Galdakao, Spain.

Unlabelled: The diagnosis of Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) is frequently challenging, especially in terms of the distinction from the other non-neoplastic causes of cytopenia. Currently, it is based on the presence of peripheral blood cytopenias, peripheral blood and bone marrow dysplasia/blasts, and clonal cytogenetic abnormalities, but MDS diagnostic features are polymorphic and non-specific. We investigated the utility of complete blood count (CBC) and research parameters (RUO) from the analyzer BC 6800 Plus (Mindray Diagnostics) to discriminate MDS-related cytopenia.

Objectives: To assess the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) and bleeding with or without thromboprophylaxis during neoadjuvant chemotherapy in bladder cancer patients scheduled for radical cystectomy.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in 4886 patients with non-metastatic bladder cancer undergoing cystectomy across 28 centres in 13 countries between 1990 and 2021. Inverse probability weighting analyses were performed to estimate the effect of thromboprophylaxis on VTE and bleeding.

Basic host response parameters to classify mortality risk in COVID-19 and community-acquired pneumonia.

Sci Rep

June 2024

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Respiratorias (CIBERES), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain.

Improved phenotyping in pneumonia is necessary to strengthen risk assessment. Via a feasible and multidimensional approach with basic parameters, we aimed to evaluate the effect of host response at admission on severity stratification in COVID-19 and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Three COVID-19 and one CAP multicenter cohorts including hospitalized patients were recruited.

Acetazolamide-induced pulmonary oedema: A disproportionality analysis from the EudraVigilance database.

Br J Clin Pharmacol

July 2024

Bioaraba Health Research Institute, Osakidetza Basque Health Service, Araba Mental Health Network, Araba Psychiatric Hospital, Pharmacy Service, Gasteiz, Alava, Spain.

To our knowledge, no prior study has analysed a possible association between acetazolamide and pulmonary oedema. The aim of this study was to use data from the EudraVigilance to detect a safety signal for acetazolamide-induced pulmonary oedema. We performed a disproportionality analysis (case-noncase method), calculating reporting odds ratios (RORs) up to 22 February 2024.

Article Synopsis
  • The Covid-19 pandemic significantly affected the mental health of healthcare professionals, with nurses experiencing higher rates of anxiety, depression, and insomnia compared to doctors.
  • A total of 1,580 healthcare workers were studied using various established mental health assessments, revealing that nurses, especially those in high-contact roles, were more vulnerable to mental health issues.
  • Despite the elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression among nurses, both groups reported similar levels of overall quality of life during the pandemic.

Introduction: Contact tracing and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a key element of tuberculosis (TB) control in low TB incidence countries. A TB control and prevention program has been active in the Basque Country since 2003, including the development of the nurse case manager role and a unified electronic record. Three World Health Organization-approved LTBI regimens have been used: isoniazid for 6 months (6H), rifampicin for 4 months (4R), and isoniazid and rifampicin for 3 months (3HR).

Background: Obesity is related to cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) such as dyslipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension, which increase mortality. Basic lipid determinations could underestimate the true atherogenic risk of patients and the impact of bariatric surgery. The objective of the study is to demonstrate the change in the advanced molecular profile of lipoproteins determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in plasma after bariatric surgery, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term mortality rates associated with COVID-19 and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in patients who were hospitalized and later discharged.
  • It utilizes a retrospective analysis of two cohorts, applying Bayesian logistic regression to control for confounding factors while assessing mortality outcomes after one year.
  • Findings suggest that both types of pneumonia have comparable long-term mortality rates, with no significant difference after adjustments, indicating a low probability of distinguishing between them based on mortality risk.

The therapeutic relationship (TR) is essential in mental health nursing care and plays a fundamental role in the understanding and treatment of the patient's health status. Despite being a bidirectional construct, limited evidence is available to shed light on this issue in mental health units and even less so in the first days of admission. This study aimed to examine the association and differences between nurses' and patients' perspectives on the establishment of the therapeutic relationship in acute mental health units during the first days of hospitalization.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the effectiveness of six different therapies for treating relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) over 5 years, using a large dataset from 74 centers across 35 countries.
  • Researchers found that natalizumab and fingolimod were more effective in reducing relapses and worsening disability compared to other therapies like dimethyl fumarate, teriflunomide, glatiramer acetate, and interferon beta.
  • The findings highlight the potential of marginal structural models (MSMs) to simulate clinical trials and compare various treatment outcomes in real-world patient populations.

Background: The frequency and intensity of heat waves have increased and will keep increasing. This meteorological phenomenon, which is considered one of the most dangerous, can affect the entire population, but certain populations are at greater risk. Concretely, elderly people are more prompt to suffer from chronic diseases and therefore to be on medication that can interact with the different temperature-regulating systems of the body.
