Tubed myocutaneous pectoralis major flap: A rescue option in esophagus reconstruction.

This article presents a complex case of total pharyngoesophageal defect reconstruction in a patient with recurrent supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma. After failed attempts with free microsurgical techniques due to complications, a tubed myocutaneous pectoralis major flap was successfully employed. The procedure aimed to achieve alimentary continuity, speech, and swallowing functionality.

A The recent years of the cardiovascular medicine saw a rapid development of advanced imaging modalities. The new era of personalized medicine takes advantage of what can be interpreted from medical images, searching for underlying connections between image phenotyping and biological characteristics to support precise clinical decisions. The application of radiomics in cardiovascular imaging has lagged behind other fields, such as oncology.

Is amiodarone still a reasonable therapeutic option for rhythm control in atrial fibrillation?

Amiodarone is the most potent antiarrhythmic drug available and is commonly prescribed to treat and prevent not only life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias but also atrial fibrillation (AF). The latest European Society of Cardiology AF guidelines state that amiodarone is recommended for long-term rhythm control in all AF patients but that other antiarrhythmic drugs should be considered first whenever possible, due to its extracardiac toxicity. In patients without significant or with only minimal structural heart disease, amiodarone is not listed as a possibility in their therapeutic scheme.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection: a country dissemination experience and outcomes.

Objective: An increasing use of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been reported in Western countries, although some differences in training schemes and outcomes have been described. We aimed to report the training model, implementation, and outcomes of ESD in Portugal.

Methods: All endoscopists trained at our center from our country (n = 9) were invited to a survey regarding: (a) training period; (b) ESD outcomes and (c) implementation of ESD in each respective center.

Screening, Diagnosis and Management of Atrial Fibrillation in Cancer Patients: Current Evidence and Future Perspectives.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, carrying a high morbimortality burden, and this also holds true in cancer patients. The association between AF and cancer goes even further, with some studies suggesting that AF can be a marker of occult cancer. There is, however, a remarkable paucity of data concerning specific challenges of AF management in cancer patients.

Transapical off-pump mitral valve repair with NeoChord™ implantation: An early single-center Portuguese experience.

Introduction: Transapical off-pump NeoChord DS1000™ implantation is a minimally invasive surgical mitral valve repair (MVr) procedure to treat degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR), which is performed using the NeoChord DS1000™ system with two and three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic guidance on a beating heart. It has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in carefully selected patients.

Objective: The authors aim to analyze short-term clinical and echocardiographic results after mitral valve repair using the NeoChord™ system.

Impact of oral anticoagulation therapy on postoperative atrial fibrillation outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common complication after cardiac surgery. Recent studies had shown this phenomenon is no longer considered transitory and is associated with higher risk of thromboembolic events or death. The aim of this study was to systematically review and analyze previous studies comparing oral anticoagulation therapy with no anticoagulation, regarding these long-term outcomes.

ESPRAS Survey on Breast Reconstruction in Europe.

Background:  The European Leadership Forum (ELF) of the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (ESPRAS) previously identified the need for harmonisation of breast reconstruction standards in Europe, in order to strengthen the role of plastic surgeons. This study aims to survey the status, current trends and potential regional differences in the practice of breast reconstruction in Europe, with emphasis on equity and access.

Materials And Methods:  A largescale web-based questionnaire was sent to consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeons, who are experienced in breast reconstruction and with understanding of the national situation in their country.

Percutaneous therapeutic options for an increasing variety of structural heart diseases (SHD) have grown dramatically. Within this context of continuous expansion of devices and procedures, there has been increased demand for physicians with specific knowledge, skills, and advanced training in multimodality cardiac imaging. As a consequence, a new subspecialty of 'Interventional Imaging' for SHD interventions and a new dedicated professional figure, the 'Interventional Imager' with specific competencies has emerged.

Differential impact of a cardiac rehabilitation program in functional parameters according to patient gender.

Introduction: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (EBCR) programs are of paramount importance in the management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) survivors. Albeit this, female patients tend to be less referred for these programs, while also having a poorer prognosis. We aimed at assessing the impact of a contemporary EBCR program on functional parameters after an AMI, and specifically the impact of gender on its potential benefits.

Strengthening Plastic Surgery in Europe - ESPRAS Survey at ESPRAS European Leadership Forum (ELF).

Comparative Methodological Assessment of the Randomized GLOBAL LEADERS Trial Using Total Ischemic and Bleeding Events.

Background: Time-to-first-event analysis considers only the first event irrespective of its severity. There are several methods to assess trial outcomes beyond time-to-first-event analysis, such as analyzing total events and ranking outcomes. In the GLOBAL LEADERS study, time-to-first-event analysis did not show superiority of ticagrelor monotherapy following one-month dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention to conventional 12-month DAPT followed by aspirin monotherapy in the reduction of the primary composite end point of all-cause mortality or new Q-wave myocardial infarction.

EASAPS/ESPRAS Considerations in getting back to work in Plastic Surgery with the COVID-19 Pandemic - A European point of view.

The aim of this paper is to summarize the results of a consensus process and a European webinar of the two societies, European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Surgery (EASAPS) and the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Societies (ESPRAS) on what is considered safe practice based on the scientific knowledge we have today. This review of the current situations gives considerations which have to be taken into account when getting back to work in plastic surgery with COVID-19 in Europe. At all times, one should be familiar the local and regional infection rates in the community, with particular emphasis on the emergence of second and third waves of the pandemic.

The present article provides an overview of the current and expected effects of plastic surgery in Europe. It presents the experience of departments for plastic and reconstructive surgery, as evaluated by interviews with members of the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (ESPRAS). The objective of this overview is to summmarise current information in our area of work and to make this accessible to a broad group of readers.

Myocardial deformation measures by cardiac magnetic resonance tissue tracking in myocarditis: Relationship with systolic function and myocardial damage.

Introduction And Objectives: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-based tissue tracking (TT) enables quantification of myocardial deformation and may be used as an objective measure of myocardial involvement in myocarditis. The aims of this study were to characterize myocardial deformation alterations in myocarditis and to determine their relationship with the extent of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), regional wall motion abnormalities (WMA) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).

Methods: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted by identifying patients with clinically suspected myocarditis who underwent CMR between 2012 and 2016.
