Article Synopsis
  • Genital psoriasis affects about 60% of psoriasis patients, presenting challenges in treatment, but IL-17 inhibitors like bimekizumab have shown promise for this difficult condition.
  • A 16-week study on 65 participants revealed that 98.4% achieved clear improvement in genital psoriasis, demonstrating both effective symptom relief and enhanced quality of life.
  • The results indicate bimekizumab could be a beneficial treatment for genital psoriasis, but further research with larger and longer studies is needed to confirm these findings.

Purpose: Psoriasis, a common systemic inflammatory disorder, presents with gender-related differences in the quality of life (QoL) and treatment outcomes. This post hoc analysis from the Phase 3b SUPREME study explored gender-related differences in patient characteristics and efficacy of secukinumab 300 mg on Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 75/90/100 and impact on QoL using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis through week 24.

Patients And Methods: The proportion of patients achieving PASI 75/90/100 was computed using a nonresponder imputation approach.

We evaluated the role of CRP and other laboratory parameters in predicting the worsening of clinical conditions during hospitalization, ICU admission, and fatal outcome among patients with COVID-19. Consecutive adult inpatients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and respiratory symptoms treated in three different COVID centres were enrolled, and they were tested for laboratory parameters within 48 h from admission. Three-hundred ninety patients were enrolled.

Obesity and Bone: A Complex Relationship.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2021

Orthopaedic and Traumatology Unit, Department of Medicine, University of Perugia, 06156 Perugia, Italy.

There is a large literature on the relationship between obesity and bone. What we can conclude from this review is that the increase in body weight causes an increase in BMD, both for a mechanical effect and for the greater amount of estrogens present in the adipose tissue. Nevertheless, despite an apparent strengthening of the bone witnessed by the increased BMD, the risk of fracture is higher.

Osteoporosis in Men: A Review of an Underestimated Bone Condition.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2021

Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department, University of Perugia, Ospedale S.Maria della Misericordia, S. Andrea delle Fratte, 06156 Perugia, Italy.

Osteoporosis is called the 'silent disease' because, although it does not give significant symptoms when it is not complicated, can cause fragility fractures, with serious consequences and death. Furthermore, the consequences of osteoporosis have been calculated to weigh heavily on the costs of health systems in all the countries. Osteoporosis is considered a female disease.

Aim In the scientific literature there are no papers that clarify which method of surgical fixation in transverse metacarpal fractures has the best functional outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare the hand strength obtained using two different methods in the treatment of these fractures. Methods A total of 52 patients who presented a transverse metacarpal fracture were enrolled.

Aim The septic non-union is a common compliance in bone healing due to bone infection. Bone resection, associated with Ilizarov osteo-distraction technique, is commonly used in these cases. The aim of this study was to analyse clinical and radiological results of teriparatide in combination with the Ilizarov technique and to compare this treatment with the standard treatment.

Introduction: Neuropathic pain (NP) is caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system, which can severely impact patients' quality of life. The current-approved treatments for NP comprise of both centrally acting agents and topical drugs, including capsaicin 8% dermal patches, which is approved for the treatment of peripheral NP.

Areas Covered: The authors summarize literature data regarding capsaicin use in patients who suffer from NP and discuss the clinical applications of this topical approach.

Schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis and Chagas disease: the leading imported neglected tropical diseases in Italy.

J Travel Med

February 2020

Department of Experimental & Clinical Medicine, University of Florence, Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit, Careggi University and Hospital, Florence, 37024, Italy.

Background: In recent years, an increasing number of individuals affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have been observed in Italy, due to migration, international travels and climate changes. Reliable data on the current NTD epidemiology in Italy and the health system preparedness on this issue are not available.

Methods: We report the results of a survey on selected NTDs (schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis, echinococcosis, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, cysticercosis, filariasis and scabies) in nine Italian sentinel centres, in order to investigate their occurrence throughout the country and identify which ones are a priority for public health interventions, development of protocols for case management, and training activities.

Background: Dupilumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody targeting the alpha subunit of IL-4 was recently approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) in adult patients.

Objective: To assess dupilumab effectiveness and safety in adults with moderate-to-severe AD in a real-life Italian multicentre retrospective cohort.

Methods: Adult moderate-to-severe AD patients, referring to 39 Italian centers, received dupilumab in the context of a national patient access program.

Tea is one of the most consumed beverages in the word. Here we report the concentrations of metals and phthalates in 32 commercial tea packages. The data were used to estimate the average daily intake of metals and phthalates, and associated Hazard Quotients (HQ) were calculated in order to determine risk of non-cancerous health effects for adults consuming tea on a daily basis.

Phenotype and genotype of 87 patients with Mowat-Wilson syndrome and recommendations for care.

Genet Med

September 2018

Clinical Genetics Unit, Department of Obstetrics and Pediatrics, AUSL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Purpose: Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is a rare intellectual disability/multiple congenital anomalies syndrome caused by heterozygous mutation of the ZEB2 gene. It is generally underestimated because its rarity and phenotypic variability sometimes make it difficult to recognize. Here, we aimed to better delineate the phenotype, natural history, and genotype-phenotype correlations of MWS.

Objective: This case-control study was designed to test the hypothesis whether carpal tunnel release (CTR) during fixation of distal radius 23-C2 AO fractures improves outcomes.

Methods: Thirty-five consecutive patients who sustained distal radius fractures of the dominant hand participated in this study. Patients were allocated into two groups: (a) The ORIF + CTR (16 patients (11 males and 5 females)); (b) the ORIF and NOT CTR 19 patients (12 males and 7 females).

Purpose: Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is a genetic disease characterized by distinctive facial features, moderate to severe intellectual disability, and congenital malformations, including Hirschsprung disease, genital and eye anomalies, and congenital heart defects, caused by haploinsufficiency of the ZEB2 gene. To date, no characteristic pattern of brain dysmorphology in MWS has been defined.

Methods: Through brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis, we delineated a neuroimaging phenotype in 54 MWS patients with a proven ZEB2 defect, compared it with the features identified in a thorough review of published cases, and evaluated genotype-phenotype correlations.

The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) represents the future of the geriatric oncology to reduce toxicities and treatment-related hospitalization in the elderly. Most patients receiving docetaxel for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer are in their seventies or older. We explored the efficacy of the CGA in predicting chemotherapy feasibility and response to docetaxel in a cohort of 24 patients aged at least 70.
