Existing technologies, such as motion capture, can be expensive or require significant time to setup, collect data, and process and analyze the data. Other methods may rely on surveys or analog tools, which are subject to interpretation.

Implant waste and associated costs in trauma and orthopaedic surgery: a systematic review.

Purpose: Trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery relies on medical implants and materials, often resulting in metalwork wastage (prosthesis, screws, nails, and plates). This places an economic strain on healthcare services and the environment. Our primary outcome is to quantify the implant wastage across the literature, and secondarily investigate the associated costs in this specialty.

Home video review in a pediatric clinical neurophysiology led multidisciplinary team meeting.

Objective: Assessment of the value of review of home videos by a pediatric multidisciplinary team (MDT) in a pediatric neurophysiology department.

Methods: We describe and evaluate the review of home videos alongside clinical history and previous investigations from patients referred to the Evelina pediatric EEG department at a twice-monthly MDT meeting between 01/2021 and 09/2022. We retrospectively analyzed measures of video quality, quantity and duration, time taken from referral to MDT meeting, pre-MDT and post-MDT meeting proposed diagnosis and clinical outcomes.

STEM exam performance: Open- versus closed-book methods in the large language model era.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to remote learning, heightening scrutiny of open-book examinations (OBEs) versus closed-book examinations (CBEs) within science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEM) education. This study evaluates the efficacy of OBEs compared to CBEs on student performance and perceptions within STEM subjects, considering the emerging influence of sophisticated large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-3.

Methods: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review analysed peer-reviewed articles published from 2013, focusing on the impact of OBEs and CBEs on university STEM students.

An overview of immune checkpoint inhibitor toxicities in bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer is the tenth most prevalent malignancy worldwide, with a significant mortality burden. Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the most common histological subtype, and treatment options are guided by whether the disease is muscle-invasive (MIBC) or non-muscle-invasive (NMIBC), with subsequent risk group stratification. The growing popularity of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) to treat MIBC and NMIBC as either monotherapy or combined with intravesical agents, may radically change the treatment paradigm of UC.

Introduction: Significant progress has been made in the diagnosis and management of axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) over recent decades. A greater understanding of the immunopathogenesis of the disease has paved the way for the development of targeted treatments. Their efficacy has been demonstrated in randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses and one head-to-head study of biologic DMARDs.

Ovarian carcinosarcoma (OCS), also known as a malignant mixed Müllerian tumour (MMMT), is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that accounts for less than 5% of ovarian cancers. It is characterized by high morbidity and mortality rates, with a median overall survival (OS) of less than 2 years. Several factors, including advancing age, nulliparity, reduced lactation rates, decreased use of oral contraceptive pills, genetic mutations in BRCA (breast cancer) genes, and the use of assisted reproductive technology, may increase the risk of OCS.

Cardiac Toxicities in Oncology: Elucidating the Dark Box in the Era of Precision Medicine.

Despite current advancements in chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted treatments, the potential for major adverse cardiovascular events, regardless of previous cardiac history, persists. Scoring systems, such as the Heart Failure Association-International Cardio-Oncology Society (HFA-ICOS) risk assessment tool, can be utilized to evaluate several factors including prior cardiac history, risk factors and cardiac biomarkers to categorize patients into low, moderate, high, and very high-risk groups. Common cardiotoxicity complications include new or worsening left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), QT interval prolongation, myocardial ischaemia, hypertension, thromboembolic disease, cardiac device malfunction and valve disease.

The manifestation of gestational RCC often lacks overt symptoms and can mimic physiological changes and disorders associated with pregnancy. Frequently, patients are asymptomatic, and the condition is detected during routine antenatal ultrasonography.

Introduction: Germinal matrix / intraventricular haemorrhage (GMIVH) remains a significant complication of prematurity. The more severe grades are associated with parenchymal haemorrhagic infarction (PHI) and hydrocephalus. A temporising procedure is usually the first line in management of neonatal post-haemorrhagic hydrocephalus (nPHH) as the risk of failure of a permanent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion is higher in the early stage.

MGMT Promoter Methylation: Prognostication beyond Treatment Response.

MGMT promoter methylation is related to the increased sensitivity of tumour tissue to chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) and thus to improved patient survival. However, it is unclear how the extent of MGMT promoter methylation affects outcomes. In our study, a single-centre retrospective study, we explore the impact of MGMT promoter methylation in patients with glioblastoma who were operated upon with 5-ALA.

There is an accelerated demand for non-surgical facial aesthetics (NSFA) encompassing the use of botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. Healthcare professionals may either treat NSFA-related complications in the public sector or practise in the private sector. Currently, there is no standardised undergraduate teaching in the UK to educate healthcare professionals on NSFA.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in females worldwide, and a leading cause of death in the United Kingdom (UK). The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the strongest risk factor for developing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cancer. Across the UK, the national HPV immunisation programme, introduced in 2008, has been successful in protecting against HPV-related infections.

Gum arabic (GA) is a natural product commonly used as a household remedy for treating various diseases in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Despite its claimed benefits, there has been a lack of research on the findings of current clinical trials (CTs) that investigated its efficacy in the treatment of various medical diseases. The aim of this systematic review was to study CTs which focused on GA and its possible use in the management of various medical diseases.

Shear wave elastography (SWE) has shown promise in distinguishing lymph node malignancies. However, the diagnostic accuracies of various SWE parameters that quantify tissue stiffness are yet to be demonstrated. To evaluate the pooled diagnostic accuracy of different SWE parameters for differentiating lymph node malignancies, we conducted a systematic screening of four databases using the PRISMA guidelines.

Pre-labour uterine contractions, occurring throughout pregnancy, are an important phenomenon involving the placenta in addition to the myometrium. They alter the uterine environment and thus potentially the blood supply to the fetus and may thus provide crucial insights into the processes of labour. Assessment in-vivo is however restricted due to their unpredictability and the inaccessible nature of the utero-placental compartment.

IL-10 in cancer: an essential thermostatic regulator between homeostatic immunity and inflammation - a comprehensive review.

Cytokines are soluble proteins that mediate intercellular signaling regulating immune and inflammatory responses. Cytokine modulation represents a promising cancer immunotherapy approach for immune-mediated tumor regression. However, redundancy in cytokine signaling and cytokines' pleiotropy, narrow therapeutic window, systemic toxicity, short half-life and limited efficacy represent outstanding challenges for cytokine-based cancer immunotherapies.
