Objectives: To investigate if clinical quality of new complete dentures predicts patient satisfaction with and usage of those dentures two years after insertion in the same way that it did initially and three months after insertion.
Methods: Four hundred and seventeen patients recruited to a denture outcome study two years previously were surveyed. In each case aspects of denture quality had previously been rated according to a validated method at the first post-insertion visit and patients had completed a postal questionnaire three months after denture insertion.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteoconductivity of bovine bone mineral in humans. Fifteen patients referred to a private specialist surgical practice were treated consecutively for the repair of alveolar defects, and/or ridge maintenance at the site of extraction sockets, prior to implantation. Bio-Oss xenograft (Geistlich Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland) was utilized as the principal grafting material.

Thirty years ago the author set out the logical sequence of dimensional changes that could occur in the impression materials of the 1970s. In the 21st Century, it appears that little has changed and that what the dental practitioner requires today is the same as it always was--a forgiving material that produces perfect impressions with a minimum of trauma to the patient, dentist and technician.

Clefts of the lip and palate are a common craniofacial anomaly, requiring complex multidisciplinary treatment and having lifelong implications for affected individuals. The aetiology of both cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) and isolated cleft palate (CP) is thought to be multifactorial, with both genetic and environmental factors playing a role. In recent years, a number of significant breakthroughs have occurred with respect to the genetics of these conditions, in particular, characterization of the underlying gene defects associated with several important clefting syndromes.

Osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB (RANK), and RANK ligand (RANKL) are mediators of various cellular interactions, including bone metabolism. We analyzed expression of these three genes during murine odontogenesis from epithelial thickening to cytodifferentiation stages. Opg showed expression in the thickening and bud epithelium.

IKK alpha is a component of the I kappa B kinase (IKK) complex that plays a key role in the activation of NF-kappa B. In Ikk alpha mutant mice and mice expressing a transdominant negative mutant of I kappa B alpha (cI kappa B alpha Delta N), molars have abnormal cusps, indicating that Ikk alpha is involved in cusp formation through the NF-kappa B pathway. However, Ikk alpha mutant incisors also have an earlier phenotype where epithelium evaginates outward into the developing oral cavity rather than invaginating into the underlying mesenchyme.

The first part of this paper discusses the clinical features of patients with hypodontia. Medical, social and clinical factors must be taken into account, along with risks and benefits, before a treatment plan can be recommended and implemented for a patient. An overview of treatment options are considered with examples.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the maintenance requirements of implant-supported fixed prostheses with cantilever arms in edentulous jaws when opposed by fixed prostheses of similar design, by natural teeth, or by complete dentures.
Materials And Methods: The maintenance requirements for the 5-year follow-up period were obtained by examining the dental records of 37 people. Six were provided with fixed prostheses in both arches, 22 with a fixed prosthesis in the mandible opposed by a complete denture, and 9 with a fixed prosthesis opposed by natural teeth.

Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen of humans and has developed an extensive repertoire of putative virulence mechanisms that allows successful colonization and infection of the host under suitable predisposing conditions. Extracellular proteolytic activity plays a central role in Candida pathogenicity and is produced by a family of 10 secreted aspartyl proteinases (Sap proteins). Although the consequences of proteinase secretion during human infections is not precisely known, in vitro, animal, and human studies have implicated the proteinases in C.

We present an unusual case of an unerupted tooth located beneath the inferior dental canal (IDC) seen as an incidental finding on a dental panoramic radiograph (DPR). An unerupted premolar was identified on the DPR lying horizontally and located entirely below the inferior dental canal in the first and second molar region. The crown was distally orientated and was somewhat demineralised.

Adducin is a heterodimer of alpha- with beta- or gamma-subunits that regulates the assembly of the spectrin-based membrane skeleton in erythrocytes. Although adducin has been identified in various non-erythroid cells and tissues, it has been localized at intercellular junctions only in keratinocytes and epidermis. However, no data are available yet on the regulation of individual adducin genes in differentiating versus hyperproliferating keratinocytes.

It is believed that mouse dentition is determined by a prepatterning of the oral epithelium into molar (proximal) and incisor (distal) regions. The LIM homeodomain protein Islet1 (ISL1) is involved in the regulation of differentiation of many cell types and organs. During odontogenesis, we find Islet1 to be exclusively expressed in epithelial cells of the developing incisors but not during molar development.

The aim of the present study was to determine the perceptions of dental students of the acceptability of different forms of behaviour management for children. The effect of client characteristics (typically developing or learning disabled), intervention method (relaxation training and reinforcement or physical restraint) and treatment outcome (good or poor) on acceptability ratings made by fourth year dental students was determined. Students rated the acceptability of treatments on the basis of written vignettes using a standardized measure of the acceptability of behavioural treatments (the Treatment Evaluation Inventory, TEI, Kazdin, French and Sherick 1981).
