A predictive score for retinopathy of prematurity by using clinical risk factors and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels.

Aim: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels.

Methods: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1 day of life, 1, 2, 3 and 4 week of life was analyzed.

The inflammatory cytokine interleukin-23 is elevated in lung cancer, particularly small cell type.

Aim Of The Study: Interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-23 play roles in inflammation and autoimmunity. The function of the IL-17/IL-23 pathway has not been completely evaluated in cancer patients. We aimed to investigate serum IL-17 and IL-23 levels and their relationship with clinicopathological and biochemical parameters in lung cancer patients.

Prolonged Tp-e Interval, Tp-e/QT Ratio and Tp-e/QTc Ratio in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with increased risk of malignant ventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac electrical inhomogeneity may be the leading cause of the increased arrhythmic risk in patients with T2DM. The peak and the end of the T wave (Tp-e) interval and associated Tp-e/QT ratio are promising measures of ventricular repolarization indicating transmural dispersion of repolarization.

Long term survival with the combination of interferon and chemotherapy in metastatic melanoma.

The prognosis of metastatic melanoma is poor. Pre-targeted treatment era, the combination of interferon-α (IF-α) plus chemotherapy had been used and have generally short response duration. Herein, we present a metastatic melanoma case that achieved long-term durable complete response (CR) IF-α plus chemotherapy and IF-α maintenance therapy and had lower Regulatory T (Treg) cells.

Monostotic Paget's disease of the second metacarpal.

Paget's disease of the bone is a focal chronic disorder proceeding with elevated osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity in the affected area. The most common sites are pelvis, femur, lower lumbar vertebrae and skull. Monostotic disease is reported in 15-30% of all cases.

CD4+CD25(high), CD8+CD28- cells and thyroid autoantibodies in breast cancer patients.

Aim Of The Study: To investigate the percentage of CD4+CD25(high) cells (including Treg cells) and CD8+CD28- cells in breast cancer patients with and without high levels of autoimmune thyroid antibodies.

Material And Methods: Thirty-five women with breast cancer (9 of them having high thyroid antibodies) and fourteen healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. Flow cytometry was used to count CD4+CD25(high) cells and CD8+CD28- suppressive cells (CD8 cell subtypes).

Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio are prolonged in patients with moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea.

Background: Prolongation of the peak and the end of T wave (Tp-e) has been reported to be associated with ventricular arrhythmias. Tp-e/QT ratio and Tp-e/QTc ratio are used as an index of ventricular arrhythmogenesis. An increased incidence of ventricular arrhythmias has been reported in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Sertoli cell tumor of the testis: a case with late metastasis.

We report on a 20-year-old male who underwent a radical orchidectomy when he was 12 years old which revealed a Sertoli cell tumor in his right testis, and who presented with a 5 x 3 cm retroperitoneal metastatic mass 8 years after orchidectomy. Current experience on Sertoli cell tumor of the testis (SCTT) is insufficient to prognosticate the clinical behavior of the primary tumor on the long term. Case reports in the literature on patients with late metastases suggest a very long followup after orchidectomy may be required.

The spectrum of diseases causing fever of unknown origin in Turkey: a multicenter study.

Objective: The purpose of this trial was to determine the spectrum of diseases with fever of unknown origin (FUO) in Turkey.

Methods: A prospective multicenter study of 154 patients with FUO in twelve Turkish tertiary-care hospitals was conducted.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 42+/-17 years (range 17-75).

Treatment of congenital venous avalvulosis using a surgically created autogenous vein valve.

A patient with venous valve hypoplasia resulting in chronic venous insufficiency is presented and a method of surgical correction by creation of an autogenous femoral vein valve described. A saphenous vein segment was opened posteriorly and inverted cephalad into the common femoral vein to construct a monocuspid vein valve. At 1 month after operation the patient experienced significant symptomatic improvement.
