Wildland fire entrainment: The missing link between wildland fire and its environment.

Wildfires are growing in destructive power, and accurately predicting the spread and intensity of wildland fire is essential for managing ecological and societal impacts. No current operational models used for fire behavior prediction resolve critical fire-atmospheric coupling or nonlocal influences of the fire environment, rendering them inadequate in accounting for the range of wildland fire behavior scenarios under increasingly novel fuel and climate conditions. Here, we present a new perspective on a dominant fire-atmospheric feedback mechanism, which we term wildland fire entrainment (WFE).

Social media activism and women's health: Endometriosis awareness and support.

Objective: While endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women globally, awareness of the disease as well as research and funding to fight the disease remains lacking as compared with other chronic diseases. This study examines how social media users utilized Instagram to raise awareness of and mobilize activism around endometriosis by analyzing prominent topics, word associations, and feminism themes in endometriosis-tagged posts on Instagram.

Methods: We used a mixed-method approach of combining computational analyses (topic modeling and word association) and human coding (qualitative thematic analysis) of Instagram posts on endometriosis.

Persistent bilateral sclerouveitis following bimatoprost implantation and removal.

Purpose: To report a case of persistent bilateral sclerouveitis following bilateral bimatoprost implantation (Durysta) that required implant removal and oral steroid course.

Observation: A 75-year-old Caucasian male with no prior ocular inflammation experienced bilateral sclerouveitis post bilateral bimatoprost implantation. Despite implant removal from both eyes, the ocular inflammation persisted, showing cystoid macular edema in both eyes and exudative retinal detachment in the right.

Genome Sequence of Three Siphoviruses in the EE, GA and EA5 Actinobacteriophage Clusters: Biscayne, Bush and GreenIvy.

Bacteriophages Biscayne, Bush and GreenIvy were isolated from soil samples in Miami, FL using NRRL B-24224 as host. Transmission electron microscopy shows siphoviral morphologies for all three phages. Based on gene content similarity to other actinobacteriophages, they are assigned to the EE, GA and EA5 clusters, respectively.

Detection of Eosinophilic Cell-free Granules Based on Expression of CCR3 and MBP Markers in Esophageal Biopsy Specimens of Patients with Suspected and Confirmed Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Purpose: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is the most well-known eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorder (EGID) characterized by the presence of a high number eosinophils within the esophageal epithelium and the clinical signs. Biopsies of patients with suspected EoE may not show a high number of eosinophils, however the presence of granules may help with the diagnosis. This study aims to evaluate the presence of cell-free eosinophil granules in the esophageal tissue of patients with suspected and confirmed EoE to accelerate the diagnosis and treatment of patients with low eosinophil count.

Review of Attributes and Outcomes of Hospitalized Patients with Alcohol Withdrawal.

Background: Alcohol abuse leads to millions of hospital admissions each year in the United States. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is associated with several serious complications, including seizures, delirium tremens, and death. Benzodiazepines have been the mainstay of treatment for hospitalized patients with alcohol withdrawal.

Background: There is a limited data examining the practice of using the airway pressure release ventilation mode for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome among respiratory therapists.

Objectives: To evaluate the current practice and barriers when using airway pressure release ventilation mode in the management of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was disseminated between November 2022 and April 2023 to respiratory therapists in Saudi Arabia.

Postpartum depression in relation to chronic diseases and multimorbidity in women's mid-late life: a prospective cohort study of UK Biobank.

Background: Maternal short-term outcomes of postpartum depression (PPD) were widely examined, but little is known about its long-term association with multiple chronic diseases (multimorbidity) in women's later life. This study aims to assess the association of PPD with chronic diseases and multimorbidity in women's mid-late life.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included female participants in UK Biobank who attended online follow-up assessment and reported their history of PPD.

Current practices in MRI screening in early onset scoliosis.

Purpose: Early onset scoliosis (EOS) has traditionally been an indication for MRI because of its association with neural axis abnormalities (NAAs). Because these abnormalities are often clinically silent and concerns regarding sedation in young children are growing, routine MRI for EOS is debated. This study investigates the current practices of EOS MRI screening among surgeons in the Pediatric Spine Study Group (PSSG).

Epidemiology of Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated Fungal Infections in the Intensive Care Unit: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Invasive fungal disease (IFD) is a morbid superinfection that can arise in critically ill patients with COVID-19 infection. Studies evaluating the full spectrum of COVID-19-associated fungal infections remain limited.

Methods: Single-center retrospective study assessing IFD in patients with COVID-19, hospitalized for ≥ 72 h in the intensive care unit (ICU) between 02/25/20 and 02/28/22 (n = 1410).

Developmental defects in ectodermal appendages caused by missense mutation in edaradd gene in the nfr mangrove killifish kryptolebias marmoratus.

The mangrove killifish, Kryptolebias marmoratus, can reproduce with self-fertilisation, offering a unique and useful genetic tool for generation of genetic mutants and quick identification of mutated genes. From an ENU-mutated mangrove killifish line R228, we have isolated a novel mutant line, no-fin-ray/nfr in which homozygous mutant of adult fish fin ray development is largely reduced. Illumina RNAseq with 3 embryos each from mutants, siblings and the parental WT strain Hon9 (only 9 embryos as total) identified a mutation in the edaradd in a highly conserved C-terminal death domain.

Taming large-scale genomic analyses via sparsified genomics.

Searching for similar genomic sequences is an essential and fundamental step in biomedical research. State-of-the-art computational methods performing such comparisons fail to cope with the exponential growth of genomic sequencing data. We introduce the concept of sparsified genomics where we systematically exclude a large number of bases from genomic sequences and enable faster and memory-efficient processing of the sparsified, shorter genomic sequences, while providing comparable accuracy to processing non-sparsified sequences.

Flow cytometric measurement of CFTR-mediated chloride transport in human neutrophils.

Immune cells express a variety of ion channels and transporters in the plasma membrane and intracellular organelles, responsible of the transference of charged ions across hydrophobic lipid membrane barriers. The correct regulation of ion transport ensures proper immune cell function, activation, proliferation, and cell death. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease in which the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) chloride channel gene is defective, consequently, the CFTR protein is dysfunctional, and the chloride efflux in CF cells is markedly impaired.

Use of patient portals to disclose STI test histories to sex partners among U.S. men who have sex with men: A call for research and guidance.

Background: This study investigates the use of patient portals for disclosing sexually transmitted infection (STI) test result histories to sexual partners among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States.

Methods: Using data from the 2022-2023 American Men's Internet Survey, this cross-sectional analysis examined demographic, behavioral, and healthcare-related factors associated with MSM's utilization of patient portals for sharing STI test results. Participants ( = 2601) were surveyed on portal use, STI testing frequency, and partner disclosure practices.

Geographic Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition of multifactorial origin, is a major cause of irreversible vision loss in industrialized countries. The dry late stage of the disease, known as geographic atrophy (GA), is characterized by progressive loss of photoreceptor cells and retinal pigment epithelial cells in the central retina. An estimated 300 000 to 550 000 people in Germany suffer from GA.

Secondhand vape exposure regulation of CFTR and immune function in cystic fibrosis.

Secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe) is a public health threat for people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and other lung diseases. Primary smoking reduces CFTR channel function, the causative defect in CF. We reported that SHSe worsens respiratory and nutritional outcomes in CF by disrupting immune responses and metabolic signaling.

Microbiome transplants may not improve health and longevity in Drosophila melanogaster.

The gut microbiome, which is composed of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and is involved in multiple essential physiological processes, changes measurably as a person ages, and can be associated with negative health outcomes. Microbiome transplants have been proposed as a method to improve gut function and reduce or reverse multiple disorders, including age-related diseases. Here, we take advantage of the laboratory model organism, Drosophila melanogaster, to test the effects of transplanting the microbiome of a young fly into middle-aged flies, across multiple genetic backgrounds and both sexes, to test whether age-related lifespan could be increased, and late-life physical health declines mitigated.

Biofeedback control of photosynthetic lighting using real-time monitoring of leaf chlorophyll fluorescence.

Optimizing photosynthetic lighting is essential for maximizing crop production and minimizing electricity costs in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Traditional lighting methods often neglect the impact of environmental factors, crop type, and light acclimation on photosynthetic efficiency. To address this, a chlorophyll fluorescence-based biofeedback system was developed to adjust light-emitting diode (LED) intensity based on real-time plant responses, rather than using a fixed photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD).

A rare case of recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast with weak hormone receptor positivity.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is an exceptionally rare malignancy, accounting for less than 0.1% of all breast cancers. Despite its favorable prognosis, optimal management remains undefined due to its rarity and lack of consensus guidelines.

Dengue virus and Zika virus alter endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contact sites to regulate respiration and apoptosis.

During infection, dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), two (ortho)flaviviruses of public health concern worldwide, induce alterations of mitochondria morphology to favor viral replication, suggesting a viral co-opting of mitochondria functions. Here, we performed an extensive transmission electron microscopy-based quantitative analysis to demonstrate that both DENV and ZIKV alter endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contact sites (ERMC). This correlated at the molecular level with an impairment of ERMC tethering protein complexes located at the surface of both organelles.

Combined technique versus stent-retriever alone: Interaction analysis of angioarchitectural and technical features.

Introduction: We aimed to explore if anatomical and technical features could interact and favor the chances of reperfusion according to the treatment strategy: combined technique (CoT) of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) with contact aspiration and stent-retriever (SR) versus SR alone.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of a prospective MT database for carotid terminus or MCA-M1 occlusion, first-line SR alone or CoT, and angiographic run with SR deployed on the first pass. The primary analysis involved the interaction between clinical and angiographic characteristics and first-line MT modality on first-pass effect (FPE; first pass eTICI2c-3).

Advancing Ethical Considerations for Data Science in Injury and Violence Prevention.

Data science is an emerging field that provides new analytical methods. It incorporates novel data sources (eg, internet data) and methods (eg, machine learning) that offer valuable and timely insights into public health issues, including injury and violence prevention. The objective of this research was to describe ethical considerations for public health data scientists conducting injury and violence prevention-related data science projects to prevent unintended ethical, legal, and social consequences, such as loss of privacy or loss of public trust.
