Purpose Of Review: To explore the definitions of sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy and how that impacts interpretation of the available data and considerations of long-term prognosis and management.
Recent Findings: The field of sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy has been hampered by lack of consensus about its proper definition, with a great deal of heterogeneity in clinical trial data in both individual studies and meta-analyses and consequent disparity of estimates of incidence, prognosis, and clinical significance. New diagnostic techniques, while potentially shedding light on pathophysiology, have only exacerbated these challenges.

Background: Older adults often mount a weak immune response to standard inactivated influenza vaccines. To induce a stronger response and better protection, a high-dose (HD) version of the inactivated Fluzone vaccine is recommended for individuals >65 years of age. While better immunogenicity and protection against the vaccine strain has been shown, it is not known if the HD vaccine also induces a robust antibody response to heterologous strains.

Background: Meningiomas exhibit considerable clinical and biological heterogeneity. We previously identified four distinct molecular groups (immunogenic, NF2-wildtype, hypermetabolic, proliferative) that address much of this heterogeneity. Despite the utility of these groups, the stochasticity of clustering methods and the use of multi-omics data for discovery limits the potential for classifying prospective cases.

Introduction: Population aging and increased cancer incidence have made the treatment of cancer in older individuals an increasingly important issue. Geriatric 8 (G8) is a screening tool developed to identify patients who would benefit most from a comprehensive geriatric assessment (GA). Previous G8 studies have involved older patients, but the age-related significance and usefulness of G8 is unknown.

Although dietary guidelines concerning carbohydrate intake for athletes are well established, these do not include recommendations for daily fibre intake. However, there are many scenarios in sports nutrition in which common practice involves the manipulation of fibre intake to address gastrointestinal comfort around exercise, or acute or chronic goals around the management of body mass or composition. The effect of fibre intake in overall health is also important, particularly in combination with other dietary considerations such as the elevated protein requirements in this population.

In cognitive psychology, research on attention is shifting from focusing primarily on how people orient toward stimuli in the environment toward instead examining how people orient internally toward memory representations. With this new shift the question arises: What factors in the environment send attention inward? A recent proposal is that one factor is cue familiarity-detection (Cleary, Irving & Mills, Cognitive Science, 47, e13274, 2023). Within this theoretical framework, we reinterpret a decades-old empirical pattern-a primacy effect in memory for repetitions-in a novel way.

Background: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluate the efficacy of an intervention remain underutilized in community-based environmental health research. RCTs that use a pragmatic design emphasize the effectiveness of interventions in complex, real world settings. Pragmatic trials may be especially relevant when community-based interventions address social and environmental determinants that threaten health equity.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) holds remarkable potential for the rapid and portable detection of trace molecules. However, the analysis and comparison of SERS spectra are challenging due to the diverse range of instruments used for data acquisition. In this paper, a spectra instrument transformation framework based on the penalized functional regression model (SpectraFRM) is introduced for cross-instrument mapping with subsequent machine learning classification to compare transformed spectra with standard spectra.

In the healthcare landscape, diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS have benefited from the patient's perspective. For fungal diseases, the patient voice remains absent in critical areas such as policy formulation, funding decisions, and research priorities. Patients affected by fungal disease, along with their caregivers and advocacy groups, possess invaluable insights into the challenges and unmet needs they face.

O-Fucosylation plays crucial roles in various essential biological events. Alongside the well-established O-fucosylation of epidermal growth factor-like repeats by protein O-fucosyltransferase 1 (POFUT1) and thrombospondin type 1 repeats by POFUT2, we recently identified a type of O-fucosylation on the elastin microfibril interface (EMI) domain of Multimerin-1 (MMRN1). Here, using AlphaFold2 screens, co-immunoprecipitation, enzymatic assays combined with mass spectrometric analysis and CRISPR-Cas9 knockouts, we demonstrate that FUT10 and FUT11, originally annotated in UniProt as α1,3-fucosyltransferases, are actually POFUTs responsible for modifying EMI domains; thus, we renamed them as POFUT3 and POFUT4, respectively.

The aim was to explore factors associated with intestinal tissue levels of anti-TNF alpha (anti-TNF), anti-TNF antibodies, and cytokines in pediatric patients with Crohn Disease (CD). In a prospective exploratory study of CD patients undergoing ileocecal resection or colonoscopy between 6/2020 and 1/2023, we analysed tissue levels of anti-TNF, anti-TNF antibodies, and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-17, IL-1β, IFN-γ) from intestinal biopsies. Mixed-effects regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used.

Objective: Transcutaneous osseointegration prosthetic systems (TOPS) offer a stable skeletal attachment for artificial limbs post-extremity amputation, serving as an alternative to socket attachment. Press-fit osseointegration implants (OI) utilized in TOPS consistently enhance quality of life and mobility for amputees, particularly those experiencing socket-related issues. Despite notable benefits, late complications such as infection and implant loosening pose challenges unique to TOPS due to their percutaneous nature.

Objectives: Evaluating craniofacial phenotype-genotype correlations prenatally is increasingly important; however, it is subjective and challenging with 3D ultrasound. We developed an automated label propagation pipeline using 3D motion- corrected, slice-to-volume reconstructed (SVR) fetal MRI for craniofacial measurements.
Methods: A literature review and expert consensus identified 31 craniofacial biometrics for fetal MRI.

Background Aims: Longitudinal outcomes in children with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remain unclear due to the absence of a standardized monitoring approach. This study aimed to 1) define improvement and worsening in children with MASLD, 2) estimate rates of improvement or deterioration with standard of care (SOC) over one and two years, and 3) identify baseline and longitudinal factors associated with improvement or worsening.
Approach And Results: Using data from two large randomized controlled trials, we derived definitions for composite improvement and worsening of MASLD based on associations between changes in ALT, GGT, and liver histology after one and two years.
