Article Synopsis
  • Cushing's disease can lead to a serious problem called Nelson's syndrome after a certain surgery (BADX), but we don’t know enough about it and how to treat it well.
  • Researchers looked at a lot of studies to learn about how common this problem is and how different treatments work.

The number of cases of these adenomas, which are below the detection limit of computed tomography but diagnosed by adrenal venous sampling, has recently been increasing. However, the pathophysiology of these adenomas, especially those manifesting clinically overt hyperaldosteronism despite their small size, remains unknown.

Mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) exist in many tissues, in which they mediate diverse functions crucial to normal physiology, including tissue repair and electrolyte and fluid homeostasis. However, inappropriate activation of MR within these tissues, and especially in the brain, causes hypertension and pathological vascular, cardiac, and renal remodeling. MR binds aldosterone, cortisol and corticosterone with equal affinity.

This prolonged, usually painful, penile erection rarely results from the alpha-adrenergic blocking action of antipsychotics. A 22-year-old African-American man developed priapism during treatment with risperidone and, on a later occasion, during treatment with ziprasidone.
