Article Synopsis
  • In the era of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) for hepatitis C, achieving a sustained virological response (SVR) is common, but there's a significant risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation, especially in co-infected patients.
  • Among patients with a history of HCC, 29.6% developed HCC again post-treatment, compared to only 1.3% in those without such a history, highlighting the need for regular monitoring.
  • Guidelines recommend HCC surveillance every 4 months for patients with prior HCC and every 6 to 12 months for those without, while also advising on monitoring for HB

J Midlife Health

January 2019

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Agartala Government Medical College and G.B. Pant Hospital, Agartala, Tripura, India.

Here, we present an unusual case of a 55-year-old woman with recurrent hypotension and bradycardia related to defecation due to an unexpected cause.

Radial access for cardiac catheterization and intervention in India has been growing steadily over the last decade with favorable clinical outcomes. However, its usage by interventional cardiologists varies greatly among Indian operators and hospitals due to large geographic disparities in health care delivery systems and practice patterns. It also remains unclear whether the advantages, as well as limitations of transradial (TR) intervention (as reported in the western literature), are applicable to developing countries like India or not.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) reactivation in patients receiving chemotherapy, biologicals, immunosupressants, or corticosteroids is emerging to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with current or prior exposure to HBV infection. These patients suffer a dual onslaught of illness: one from the primary disease for which they are receiving the culprit drug that led to HBV reactivation, and the other from HBV reactivation itself. The HBV reactivation not only leads to a compromised liver function, which may culminate into hepatic failure; it also adversely impacts the treatment outcome of the primary illness.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those on hemodialysis due to nosocomial infections and past blood transfusions. While a majority of HCV-infected patients with end-stage renal disease are asymptomatic, some may ultimately experience decompensated liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma. Administration of a combination of elbasvir/grazoprevir for 12 weeks leads to high sustained virologic response (SVR) rates in patients with HCV genotypes (GTs) 1a, 1b or 4 and stage 4 or 5 CKD.

Objectives: To detect Cytotoxic T- Lymphocyte Antigen-4 (CTLA4) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at +49A/G (rs231775) and -318C/T (rs5742909) positions in children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) and also assay urinary soluble CTLA4 (sCTLA4) levels in children with minimal change disease (MCD), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) in remission.

Methods: The study included 59 patients of INS (MCD-23, FSGS-15 and SSNS in remission-21) and 35 healthy controls. The CTLA4 SNPs profiling was done in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and urinary sCTLA4 level was assayed by ELISA kit.

Introduction: Subarachnoid block, although being highly efficient with lesser drug doses, often has limitation such as hypotension, continues to be a matter of concern to the anesthetist. The present study was aimed to compare the use of phenylephrine, ephedrine, and mephentermine bolus for maintenance of blood pressure during spinal anesthesia in lower abdominal surgeries.

Subjects And Methods: In a randomized, prospective study, 90 adult patients of either sex who developed hypotension during surgery under subarachnoid block were allocated into three groups to receive bolus phenylephrine, ephedrine, and mephentermine.

Background: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, or Tourette's syndrome, is defined as the presence of both motor and vocal (phonic) tics for more than 12 months, that manifest before the age of 18 years, in the absence of secondary causes. Treatment of motor and phonic tics is difficult and challenging.

Objectives: To determine the safety and effectiveness of botulinum toxin in treating motor and phonic tics in people with Tourette's syndrome, and to analyse the effect of botulinum toxin on premonitory urge and sensory tics.
