Acetazolamide therapy evaluation in haemorrhagic stroke.

The influence of acetazolamide in patients with hemorrhagic stroke was assessed in 54 patients in comparison with the influence of other therapies in 68 patients included in a control group. Modified Rankin Scale and mortality rate were evaluated at three different moments: onset, 72 hours and control (3 weeks-one month from the onset). A better outcome was seen when acetazolamide was given.

Postoperative outcome of intracranial meningiomas; long-term prognosis.

A retro- and prospective study was carried out in 150 patients who underwent surgery for benign (grade I) intracranial meningiomas (ICM). The mean duration of the follow-up was of 4 years. The subjects were divided into 4 groups according to the intervals of follow-up examination.

Neurosurgical stress and immune function.

The present study was carried out in 31 neurosurgical patients with unaffected consciousness and concerned by the severity of their condition. The severity of stress was established by the comparison between the pre- and postoperative peripheral blood lymphocyte populations and subpopulations (B, T, Th lymphocytes, serum complement and circulating immune complexes). The peripheral blood lymphocyte populations and subpopulations were determined by the technique of sheep red blood cell rosette.

Management of the neurosurgical emergencies in pregnancy.

This study presents the files of nine pregnant women with severe neurosurgical diseases (traumatic, vascular, and tumoral) who were treated in the Neurosurgical Clinic, from 1982 to 1988. Conclusions were drawn after a survey according to the optimal therapy applied, to the mother or fetus priority, to the age of patients and to the severity of the neurological impairment. The early intervention of a team including the neurosurgeon, obstetrician and the specialist in the intensive care unit saves one life or both.

Conservative treatment for multilocular empyema. Case report.

The case of a 35-year-old patient is reported. After a two-week interval following an ORL puncture in the frontal sinuses, the patient showed a suppuration on the right hemisphere and was admitted in the territorial neurosurgical clinic. Due to a progressive neurological impairment (loss of consciousness and left hemiplegia) the patient was transferred to the Neurological Clinic of "G.

Unilateral exophthalmos in a diabetes case with major ocular complications: diabetic retinopathy and neovascular glaucoma. Case report.

Unilateral exophthalmos associated with an inflammatory pseudotumoral process in a woman with insulin-dependent diabetes diagnosed 30 years earlier is reported. The discussion is focussed on the complications: diabetic retinopathy and neovascular glaucoma as well as on the therapy applied.

Intraorbital metastases.

Intraorbital metastases are rare. Tumors that metastasize more frequently in the orbit are: tumors of the breast, thyroid, prostate, spinocellular epithelioma, urinary bladder and Ewing sarcoma with an orbital location. The dominant feature of intraorbital metastases is exophthalmos.

Posterior fossa extradural hematomas in children: report of nine cases.

Extradural post-traumatic posterior fossa hematoma is a rare condition estimated to complicate about 0.13% of all craniocerebral injuries, and represents 5.8% of the entire group of extradural hematomas in our records.

Abnormal somatosensory evoked potentials in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The sensory symptoms and the involvement of the sensory tracts in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were much debated by various authors. The SEPs were studied in 10 patients with ALS by percutaneous stimulation of the median and tibial nerves. The SEPs were recorded at: Erb's point, cervical level (CII), lumbar level (L1) and parietal level.

Carotid endarterectomy.

Our study is based on 102 patients who underwent 104 carotid endarterectomies between 1980 and 1992. Sixty-three patients (61.8%) has surgery at left carotid artery bifurcation.

Subacute subdural hematoma.

The subacute subdural hematoma (SASDH) is an entity which is still to be analyzed because the attention of the clinicians was directed towards the acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and to the chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). A series of 69 patients with SASDH was studied outlining the particularities of the affection. A trauma caused the hematoma but it was a milder one.

Traumatic intracerebral hematoma. A report of 50 cases.

The study presents an analysis of demographic, clinical and paraclinical characteristics of 50 cases as well as the surgical treatment results of 50 cases with traumatic intracerebral hematoma (TIH) out of 70 admitted. The men showed the greatest incidence, the male/female ratio was 5:1. Age mean was 55.

Calcium blockers in ischemic stroke.

The study investigated the evolution of 72-nifedipine treated cases with ischemic stroke. Dipyridamole was administered to 72 controls. Subjects showed clinical improvement, thus calcium blockers can constitute a therapy alternative.

Head injuries with temporal lobe compression.

The present study is based on the evolution of 219 cases of temporal compressive craniocerebral trauma admitted to the neurotraumatology department between 1985 and 1990. Correlations are made between the accident-operation time interval and the results obtained. Special emphasis is laid on the paraclinical methods used to make an accurate and complete diagnosis, of which computerized tomography is the most reliable for head injuries.

Palm-chin reflex in acute ischaemic stroke.

The majority of 71 cases with acute cerebrovascular ischaemic stroke displayed an absence of the palm-chin (palmomental) reflex in the affected part of the body, during the first three weeks, poststroke. After this period the reflex is present again. In our opinion, the absence of the palm-chin reflex in the acute ischaemic stroke shows a more important semiologic value than its presence.

Cerebral dysfunction revealed by EEG mapping in the schizoform epileptic psychosis.

Twenty schizophrenia-like psychotic patients suspected of epilepsy were explored using EEG techniques (recordings in the 10-20 International System, source derivation, EEG mapping and EEG spectral reaction mapping by photic and somesthetic stimulation). In 16 of them, latent epileptic disorders were found. EEG spiking foci could be located either: (a) in temporal, (b) fronto-basal, or (3) in the sagittal-line leads.

Time-related variations of some biochemical parameters in patients with short- or long-lasting post-traumatic coma.

The variation in time of some blood biochemical parameters was investigated in 100 patients with acute head injury and coma of variable duration, in parallel with the clinical course. The purpose of this study was to establish possible correlations between the severity of the trauma (assessed according to the coma classification proposed by C. Arseni) and the variation of the parameters studied.

The interaction of the two cerebral hemispheres in the integration of the language system.

Based on the data obtained following the investigation of patients with organic pathological foci in the right hemisphere, the authors demonstrate the thesis of bilateral integration of the language system by the interaction of two cerebral hemispheres. They advance as main point in supporting this idea the primary and secondary disturbances induced in one chain of language or another by lesions in various zones of the right hemisphere not only in left-handed patients but also in right-handed ones.
