Background: Current guidelines recommend a rhythm control strategy in patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) while catheter ablation has been shown to be a safer and more efficacious approach than antiarrhythmic medications.
Methods: HECMOS was a nationwide snapshot survey of cardiorenal morbidity in hospitalized cardiology patients. In this sub-study, we included 276 cases who had a history of AF, particularly on the rhythm strategy, and catheter ablation procedures had been performed before the index admission.

The development of angina in the setting of new-onset left bundle branch block (LBBB) that resolves at the same time with the disappearance of LBBB, without coexistent myocardial ischemia, denotes the painful LBBB syndrome. In this illustrative case report we describe a young male patient with painful LBBB syndrome. The LBBB was rate-dependent occurring during exercise and the patient was successfully treated with bisoprolol.

Background: This study was designed to analyze and compare plasma levels of 8-isoprostane (8-epiPGF2α), a biomarker of lipid peroxidation, and uric acid (UA), a marker of the antioxidant status, in standard laparoscopic (LC) and laparoendoscopic single-site cholecystectomy (LSSC).
Materials And Methods: Forty patients with noncomplicated cholelithiasis were randomized to undergo either LSSC (n = 20) or LC (n = 20). The patients had body mass index <30, American Society of Anesthesiologists score I or II, and no previous upper gastrointestinal surgery.

Background: Laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) surgery is an evolution of laparoscopic surgery aiming at decreasing the patient's parietal trauma associated with abdominal operations. LESS has been found so far to be efficient and have the same good results as the standard four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy. α-Defensins are antimicrobial peptides of the organism.

Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) after pneumonectomy is a well-known, dreaded complication associated with a high mortality rate. We present a case of video-assisted thoracoscopic management of a silent, small BPF. After thoracoscopic removal of all debris and inflammatory tissues, the identified BPF was successfully sealed by thoracoscopic instillation of tissue glue.

Mediastinal exploration is a common procedure used for the diagnosis of the thoracic diseases and the staging of lung cancer. A retrospective review was performed to assess sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and morbidity of video-assisted cervical mediastinoscopy (VACM). From 1999 to 2006 a total of 139 VACMs were performed in 138 patients.

Objectives: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to examine the association between baseline C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after successful electrical cardioversion (EC).
Background: Current evidence links AF to the inflammatory state. Inflammatory indexes such as CRP have been related to the development and persistence of AF.

Headache represents a rare manifestation of myocardial ischemic pain. It is believed that this clinical symptom results from convergence of heart autonomic fibers with somatic inputs originating from the head. The authors describe for the first time the case of a 73-year-old woman who experienced an acute non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction that manifested solely with intense occipital headache associated with vomiting and impaired level of consciousness.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a necrotizing vasculitis that mainly affects the respiratory tract and kidneys. Of note, involvement of the heart is being increasingly recognized in these patients. Cardiac manifestations can arise from the coronary arteries, pericardium, myocardium, endocardium, valves, conduction system and great vessels, but in most cases cardiac involvement is clinically silent.

Forty five rabbits underwent haemorrhagic shock for 30 minutes and reinfusion of shed blood. They were killed 30 minutes later.
