The inhibitor of human α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase (α-NaGalase) was isolated from a water-ethanol extract of the brown algae . Currently, tumor α-NaGalase is considered to be a therapeutic target in the treatment of cancer. According to NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometric analysis, it is a high-molecular-weight fraction of phlorethols with a degree of polymerization (DP) equaling 11-23 phloroglucinols (CcPh).

Most proteins have the ability to self-associate into homooligomeric protein complexes, which consist of two or more identical subunits. Today, modern methods of molecular modeling are an integral part of the study of many biologically active molecules. In silico methods are widely used in structure establishing and function and activity prediction of lectins - carbohydrate-binding proteins.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, the incidence of which is still widespread throughout the world, are actualizing the search and development of new, more effective antiherpetic drugs. The development of multifunctional drug delivery systems, including liposome-based ones, has become a relevant and attractive concept in nanotechnology. The ability of complexes of κ- and Σ-carrageenans (CRGs)-sulfated polysaccharides of red algae, with echinochrome A (Ech), as well as the liposomal form of the Σ-CRG/Ech complex-to inhibit different stages of HSV-1 infection in Vero cells was studied.

The sulfated polysaccharides from cystocarpic plants of Mazzaella parksii were studied. Fractionation at a given KCl concentration allowed us to assume, and stepwise fractionation to prove, that these polysaccharides consisted of several carrageenans that differed in structure and molecular weight. As a result of stepwise fractionation with KCl, nine gelling (1-9) and one non-gelling (10) fractions were obtained.

Two new guanidine alkaloids, batzelladines O () and P (), were isolated from the deep-water marine sponge The structures of these metabolites were determined by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and ECD. The isolated compounds exhibited cytotoxic activity in human prostate cancer cells PC3, PC3-DR, and 22Rv1 at low micromolar concentrations and inhibited colony formation and survival of the cancer cells. Batzelladines O () and P () induced apoptosis, which was detected by Western blotting as caspase-3 and PARP cleavage.

Post-menopausal dry mouth or xerostomia is caused by reduced salivary secretion. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of echinochrome A (Ech A) in alleviating submandibular gland dysfunctions in ovariectomized rats that mimic menopause. Female rats that were eight-weeks-old were randomly divided into SHAM-6, -12; OVX-6, -12; and ECH-6, -12 groups (consisting of 6- and 12-weeks post-sham-operated, ovariectomized, and Ech A-treated ovariectomized rats, respectively).

Polysaccharides' derivatives are promising biologically active compounds for biotechnology, nutrition, industries, and are becoming increasingly important in medicine and pharmacy. Laminaran from brown alga Saccharina cichorioides (ScL) was chemically modified to obtain the carboxymethylated derivative (ScLCM) with improved structure and bioactivity. ScLCM was identified as (1 → 3)-β-D-glucan with -CH-COOH groups at some positions 2, 4, and 6 of glucose residues.

The B12-producing strains DSM 1650 and sp. CCUG 2519 (both formerly ), with the most distributed pathway among bacteria for exogenous choline/betaine utilization, are promising recombinant hosts for the endogenous production of B12 precursor betaine by direct methylation of bioavailable glycine or non-proteinogenic -alanine. Two plasmid-based de novo betaine pathways, distinguished by their enzymes, have provided an expression of the genes encoding for -methyltransferases of the halotolerant cyanobacterium or plant to synthesize the internal glycine betaine or -alanine betaine, respectively.

We aimed to observe the effects of Echinochrome A (Ech A) on systemic changes using a rat model of preeclampsia. The results showed that an infusion of angiotensin II (Ang II) through an osmotic pump (1 μg/kg/min) on GD 8 increased systolic and diastolic blood pressures and reduced fetal weight and placental weight. The diameters of the glomeruli were expended and glomeruli capillaries were diminished.

The diverse therapeutic feasibility of the sea urchin-derived naphthoquinone pigment, Echinochrome A (Ech A), has been studied. Simple and noninvasive administration routes should be explored, to obtain the feasibility. Although the therapeutic potential has been proven through several preclinical studies, the biosafety of orally administered Ech A and its direct influence on intestinal cells have not been evaluated.

Six fucoidan fractions were isolated from the brown alga Alaria angusta. Structures of enzymatic hydrolysis products of the fraction 1AaF2 (Fuc:Gal ~ 1:1; 33 % of sulfates) by fucanase from Wenyingzhuangia fucanilytica were studied by chemical and instrumental (NMR spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry) methods. It was shown that 1AaF2 consisted of two structurally different fucoidans: a sulfated 1,3;1,4-α-L-fucan and an enzyme-resistant sulfated and acetylated complex fucogalactan (Fuc:Gal ~ 1:2; 19 % of sulfates) 1AaF2_HMP containing extended 1,3-linked fucose and 1,3/1,4-linked galactose fragments (up to 5 residues).

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are prototypical ligand-gated ion channels, provide cholinergic signaling, and are modulated by various venom toxins and drugs in addition to neurotransmitters. Here, four APETx-like toxins, including two new toxins, named Hmg 1b-2 Met and Hmg 1b-5, were isolated from the sea anemone and characterized as novel nAChR ligands and acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) modulators. All peptides competed with radiolabeled α-bungarotoxin for binding to muscle-type and human α7 nAChRs.
