Article Synopsis
  • OSCs (Oxidosqualene cyclases) are important enzymes that change linear triterpenes into tetracyclic compounds, which then serve as precursors for bioactive metabolites.
  • Two OSC genes associated with different synthases, parkeol and lanostadienol, were identified in sea cucumbers from the Sclerodactylidae family to expand knowledge on OSC diversity.
  • Analysis revealed that the two identified OSC genes, OSC1 and OSC2, share a high degree of sequence similarity and suggest distinct evolutionary paths from OSC genes found in the Stichopodidae family.

The natural 5-azaindoles, marine sponge guitarrin C and D, were observed to exert inhibitory activity against a highly active alkaline phosphatase (ALP) CmAP of the PhoA family from the marine bacterium , with IC values of 8.5 and 110 µM, respectively. The superimposition of CmAP complexes with -nitrophenyl phosphate (NPP), a commonly used chromogenic aryl substrate for ALP, and the inhibitory guitarrins C, D, and the non-inhibitory guitarrins A, B, and E revealed that the presence of a carboxyl group at C6 together with a hydroxyl group at C8 is a prerequisite for the inhibitory effect of 5-azaindoles on ALP activity.

Center for Bio-Signal Research, Division of Advanced Predictive Research, Korea Institute of Toxicology (KIT), Daejeon 34114, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Echinochrome A (EchA), a marine-derived natural product, has shown promise in treating cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its cardiac safety remains underexplored. In this study, we utilized human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiac organoids (hCOs) to validate their ability to model the cardiac safety profile of EchA in a human-relevant system.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Department of Bioeconomy and Food Security, School of Economics and Management, Far Eastern Federal University, Vladivostok 690922, Russia.

Matrikines (MKs), the products of enzymatic fragmentation of various extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, regulate cellular activity by interacting with specific receptors. MKs affect cell growth, proliferation, and migration, can induce apoptosis and autophagy, and are also effectively used in biomedicine and functional nutrition. Recently, there has been great interest in the structural features and biological activity of MKs from various sources.

November 2024

Youth Research Laboratory of Recombinant DNA Technologies, Advanced Engineering School, Institute of Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Food Systems, Far Eastern Federal University, 10 Ajax Bay, Russky Island, 690922 Vladivostok, Russia.

Background: The endogenous ecto-enzyme and exogenously administered alkaline phosphatase (ALP) have been evidenced to significantly attenuate inflammatory conditions, including Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-related signaling and cytokine overexpression, barrier tissue dysfunction and oxidative stress, and metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, in experimental models of colitis, liver failure, and renal and cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. This suggests multiple mechanisms of ALP anti-inflammatory action that remain to be fully elucidated.

Methods: Recent studies have contributed to a deeper comprehension of the role played by ALP in immune metabolism.

Background: Gonorrhea, induced by Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection, stands as a prevalent sexually transmitted inflammatory disease globally. Our earlier research illuminated that N. gonorrhoeae-infected macrophages provoke inflammation by activating the intracellular sensor NACHT, LRR, and PYD domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, a pivotal regulator in inflammatory diseases governing the maturation and secretion of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18.

Sulfated polysaccharides SpvF1, SpvF2, SpvF3, and SpvF4 from the brown alga collected north of Hon Do (Nha Trang Bay, Vietnam) were isolated and studied. The structure of the obtained polysaccharide was studied using chemical methods and NMR spectroscopy. Fucoidans were low-sulfated (SpvF1, SpvF2) and medium-sulfated (SpvF3, SpvF4) heterogeneous polysaccharides.

In the present study, we investigated the antiproliferative effect of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) from marine Gram-negative bacterium Cobetia marina (formerly C. pacifica) KMM 3878 against human leukemia cells in vitro and the potential molecular mechanism underlying this activity. Our results showed that the CPS could inhibit the proliferation of HL-60 cells in a dose-dependent manner with no effect on normal PBMC cells.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are a family of integral membrane proteins that selectively transport water and glycerol across the cell membrane. Because AQPs are involved in a wide range of physiological functions and pathophysiological conditions, AQP-based therapeutics may have the broad potential for clinical utility, including for disorders of water and energy balance. However, AQP modulators have not yet been developed as suitable candidates for clinical applications.

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins, whose biological effects are exerted via binding to glycoconjugates expressed on the surface of cells. Exposure to lectins can lead not only to a change in the structure and properties of cells but also to their death. Here, we studied the biological activity of lectins from the mussels Crenomytilus graynus (CGL) and Mytilus trossulus (MTL) and showed that these proteins can affect the proliferation of human lymphoma cells.
