The Darwin Tree of Life (DToL) project aims to generate high-quality reference genomes for all eukaryotic organisms in Britain and Ireland. At the time of writing, PacBio HiFi reads are generated for all samples using the Sequel IIe systems by the Wellcome Sanger Institute's Scientific Operations teams, however we expect lessons from this work to apply directly to the Revio system too, as core principles of SMRT sequencing remain the same. We observed that HiFi yield is highly variable for DToL samples.

The cultivation period of shiitake () is approximately 120-150 d, which is longer than that of other edible mushrooms. The development of fruiting bodies in shiitake is affected by light exposure. In this study, we investigated the effects of blue light on the production and ergothioneine contents of shiitake mushrooms.

In this study, a binary composite adsorbent based on activated carbon and phosphoric acid geopolymer foam (ACP) was prepared by combining phosphoric acid geopolymer (PAGP) with activated carbon (AC) and applied for the removal of methylene blue (MB). Activated carbon was thoroughly mixed with a mixture of fly ash and metakaolin in varying ratios, followed by phosphoric acid activation and thermal curing. The ACP adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), surface area analyser (SAP), and thermogravimetric analyser (TGA).

Erythritol is a beneficial sugar alcohol that can be used as a sugar substitute for diabetic patients. Erythritol is a bioproduct produced by microorganisms as a response to high osmotic pressure and stress in the growth medium. High concentrations of carbon source substrate can increase the osmotic pressure and provide more nutrient supply for yeast growth and metabolism.

Members of the families Thermosynechococcaceae and Thermostichaceae are well-known unicellular thermophilic cyanobacteria and a non-thermophilic genus was newly classified into the former. Analysis of the codon usage bias (CUB) of cyanobacterial species inhabiting different thermal and non-thermal niches will benefit the understanding of their genetic and evolutionary characteristics. Herein, the CUB and codon context patterns of protein-coding genes were systematically analyzed and compared between members of the two families.

Background: We evaluated 1-year engagement in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care and associated factors among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in a large cohort of oral PrEP users in the Paris region, France.
Methods: We included in this analysis cisgender GBMSM enrolled in the ANRS PREVENIR cohort study from 3 May 2017 to 28 February 2019. We categorized 1-year PrEP engagement into 4 categories: high (consistent visits, attendance, and prescription refills at months 3, 6, 9, and 12), low (missed visits or no prescription refills), disengagement (PrEP discontinuation), and lost to follow-up.

Background: Several studies suggested the genetic association between IL10RA variants and susceptibility to Behcet's disease (BD). However, the precise mechanism of the association is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism underlying the genetic associations between IL10RA polymorphisms and the risk of BD.

The widespread adoption of electronic devices has enhanced living standards but has also led to a surge in electronic waste (e-waste), creating serious environmental and health challenges. Although various methods exist to recover valuable metals from e-waste, each has notable drawbacks. Among these, chemical leaching with aqua regia is widely used but is both highly corrosive and hazardous.

Microbial fermentation of agro-industrial residues is gaining significant traction as a sustainable and economically viable approach in bioprocessing. This study explored lactic acid production from selected agro-industrial residues: pre-treated sugarcane waste, potato peel waste, or milk processing waste with alfalfa pellets using strains of organic origin. Five homo-fermentative strains (VITJ1, VITJ2, VITJ3, VITJ4, and VITJ5) were assessed for compatibility and formed into 15 consortia.

Heparin is a highly valuable active pharmaceutical ingredient, typically derived from porcine intestinal mucosa. Traditionally, various commercial resins have been used as adsorbents for heparin extraction; however, there has been growing interest in exploring more cost-effective adsorbents in recent years to improve heparin recovery. Zeolites, a typical aluminosilicate known for their high surface area, porosity, and thermal stability, were selected for evaluation in this study.

Background: Recent studies demonstrate a link between corticosteroid injection and surgical complications when procedures occur shortly after steroid administration. These publications focus on single procedures like carpal tunnel release. This study seeks to demonstrate how surgical site infection risk changes across thirteen common elective hand procedures when steroid injection is performed contemporaneously.

Unlabelled: Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide and a leading cause of mortality. Chemotherapy medications are often limited in use due to issues like drug resistance, P-glycoprotein efflux, and relapse of chemotherapy. In this study, we formulated a nanosuspension with curcumin and nimbin to address these limitations and assessed its anticancer potential using molecular docking and MTT assay.

Despite the necessity of improved nutrition for these groups, some members do not fully meet their recommended daily micronutrient needs, a challenge exacerbated by different socioeconomic, cultural, and communal constraints resulting in malnutrition. Iron deficiency anaemia is a major concern among children and mothers, especially in pastoralist communities, due to poor nutrition and other related factors.

Heat stress (HS) poses a significant challenge to the United States swine industry. Sows and their piglets are particularly vulnerable to HS, as the periparturient phase is characterized by heightened metabolism and increased oxidative stress and inflammation. The study examined the effects of using conductive electronic cooling pads (ECP) and dietary supplementation with 4% Moringa (M) leaf powder on controlling oxidative stress and inflammation caused by HS in sows and their piglets.

In this study, the NiFe-LDH doped with different Pt group metals (Pt, Ru, Ir, Rh) was prepared as a cocatalyst for photocatalytic H production over g-CN. It is found that the doped NiFe-LDH loaded g-CN generally displays higher photocatalytic activity than the raw NiFe-LDH modified one, where the NiFeRu-LDH loaded g-CN shows the optimal H evolution rate of 77.4 μmol h, about 5.

Stoma surgery is frequently used to treat conditions such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory diseases. While it can extend patients' lives, it often introduces challenges that negatively affect quality of life. Convex skin barriers are commonly recommended for managing flat or retracted stomas and addressing irregular peristomal surfaces, such as creases or folds.

A comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF-MS) method was developed to analyze 25 traditional phthalate esters (PAEs) and 19 novel alternatives in indoor dust samples. PAEs are ubiquitous in indoor environments because they are widely used as plasticizers in a variety of consumer products, and potential health concerns have prompted the need for effective monitoring methods. In this study, dust samples were collected from various indoor settings in a university campus, including classrooms, cafeterias, laboratories, and dormitories, and were subsequently ultrasonically extracted with hexane-dichloromethane (1∶1, v/v) solution for 30 min.
