Psychological states influence our happiness and productivity; however, estimates of their impact have historically been assumed to be limited by the accuracy with which introspection can quantify them. Over the last two decades, studies have shown that introspective descriptions of psychological states correlate with objective indicators of cognition, including task performance and metrics of brain function, using techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Such evidence suggests it may be possible to quantify the mapping between self-reports of experience and objective representations of those states (e.

Bipolar disorder is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. Despite high heritability (60-80%), the majority of the underlying genetic determinants remain unknown. We analysed data from participants of European, East Asian, African American and Latino ancestries (n = 158,036 cases with bipolar disorder, 2.

Tissue-resident memory CD8 T (T) cells provide protection from infection at barrier sites. In the small intestine, T cells are found in at least two distinct subpopulations: one with higher expression of effector molecules and another with greater memory potential. However, the origins of this diversity remain unknown.

Tolerance to dietary antigens is critical for avoiding deleterious type 2 immune responses resulting in food allergy (FA) and anaphylaxis. However, the mechanisms resulting in both the maintenance and failure of tolerance to food antigens are poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that the goblet-cell-derived resistin-like molecule β (RELMβ) is a critical regulator of oral tolerance.

There is little research on anemia and vitamin D deficiency in HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children. This study was aimed to describe and compare the prevalence of anemia and vitamin D inadequacy in HEU children and HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) children, and to examine the associations of HIV exposure with anemia and vitamin D inadequacy. This was a hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study nested within the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV program in Hunan Province during July and September 2022.

Logarithmic growth-rates are fundamental observables for describing ecological systems and the characterization of their distributions with analytical techniques can greatly improve their comprehension. Here a neutral model based on a stochastic differential equation with demographic noise, which presents a closed form for these distributions, is used to describe the population dynamics of microbiota. Results show that this model can successfully reproduce the log-growth rate distribution of the considered abundance time-series.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have demonstrated exceptional performance across various image segmentation tasks. However, the process of preparing datasets for training segmentation DNNs is both labor-intensive and costly, as it typically requires pixel-level annotations for each object of interest. To mitigate this challenge, alternative approaches such as using weak labels (e.

Personal characteristics, unfavorable weather conditions and air pollution have been linked with reduced physical activity in children. However, among children with asthma the effects of these parameters remain unclear. This study objectively quantified the physical activity of children with asthma and evaluated its association with environmental, personal, and clinical parameters.

Huntington's disease, one of more than 50 inherited repeat expansion disorders, is a dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG expansion in HTT. Inherited CAG repeat length is the primary determinant of age of onset, with human genetic studies underscoring that the disease is driven by the CAG length-dependent propensity of the repeat to further expand in the brain. Routes to slowing somatic CAG expansion, therefore, hold promise for disease-modifying therapies.

Purpose: The expression of the respiratory events in OSA is influenced by different mechanisms. In particular, REM sleep can highly increase the occurrence of events in a subset of OSA patients, a condition dubbed REM-OSA (often defined as an AHI 2 times higher in REM than NREM sleep). However, a proper characterization of REM-OSA and its pathological sequelae is still inadequate, partly because of limitations in the current definitions.

Background: Anastomotic leak (AL) is a major complication in colorectal surgery, significantly contributing to perioperative morbidity and mortality. Among strategies to prevent AL, Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Angiography (ICG-FA) has emerged as a promising method for assessing bowel perfusion intraoperatively. This systematic review evaluates the impact of ICG-FA on AL rates and other postoperative outcomes following colorectal anastomoses.

Maize seedlings in cold regions and high latitude often face abiotic stress. As a result, weak seedlings affect maize production, The commonly used seed coating agents in production are mainly to prevent biological stress of pests and diseases, and have little effect on seedling vigor and abiotic resistance. In this experiment, the combination of graphene oxide (GO) and seed coating agent can effectively prevent pests and diseases and increase the growth of seedlings.

We introduce a quantum-classical generative model for small-molecule design, specifically targeting KRAS inhibitors for cancer therapy. We apply the method to design, select and synthesize 15 proposed molecules that could notably engage with KRAS for cancer therapy, with two holding promise for future development as inhibitors. This work showcases the potential of quantum computing to generate experimentally validated hits that compare favorably against classical models.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data from agroecosystems in low- and middle-income countries is limited. We surveyed chicken (n = 52) and pig (n = 47) farms in Kenya to understand AMR in animal-environment pathways. Using LC-MS/MS, we validated the methods for analyzing eight common antibiotics and quantified the associated risks.

Persistent bacterial lung infections in children lead to significant morbidity and mortality due to antibiotic resistance. In this paper, we describe how phage therapy has shown remarkable efficacy in preclinical and clinical studies, demonstrating significant therapeutic benefits through various administration routes. Ongoing trials are evaluating its safety and effectiveness against different pathogens.

This study aims to elucidate the association between ABSI and BMD using data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving participants aged 20-60. ABSI was calculated using the formula: ABSI = 1000 × waist circumference (m)×weight (kg)×height (m).

Load frequency control (LFC) is critical for maintaining stability in interconnected power systems, addressing frequency deviations and tie-line power fluctuations due to system disturbances. Existing methods often face challenges, including limited robustness, poor adaptability to dynamic conditions, and early convergence in optimization. This paper introduces a novel application of the sinh cosh optimizer (SCHO) to design proportional-integral (PI) controllers for a hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and thermal generator-based two-area power system.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is pathogenic to both humans and marine animals. Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria have been reported to cause mortalities in shrimp, with phage therapy presenting an alternative and eco-friendly biocontrol strategy for controlling bacterial diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and characterize phages for their applicability in lysing Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABSC) comprises a group of environmental microorganisms, which are a concerning cause of opportunistic respiratory infections in patients with cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis. Only 45.6% of MABSC treatments are successful, and therefore this is a need to discover new antimicrobials that can treat these pathogens.

Myocardial infarction (MI) causes the loss of millions of cardiomyocytes, and current treatments do not address this root issue. New therapies focus on stimulating cardiomyocyte division in the adult heart, inspired by the regenerative capacities of lower vertebrates and neonatal mice. This review explores strategies for heart regeneration, offers insights into cardiomyocyte proliferation, evaluates in vivo models, and discusses integrating in vitro human cardiac models to advance cardiac regeneration research.
