Piwi‑interacting RNAs (piRNAs) comprise the largest class of non‑coding RNAs. They represent a molecular feature shared by all non‑aging biological systems, including germline and somatic cancer stem cells, which display an indefinite capacity of renewal and proliferation and are potentially immortal. They have been identified in animal stomachs, but their relationship with human gastric cancers remains largely unclear.

Background: Lung cancer remains a major global health problem, which causes millions of deaths annually. Because the prognosis is mainly determined by the stage of lung cancer, precise early diagnosis is of great significance to improve the survival and prognosis. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has been recognized as a sensitive and specific biomarker for the detection of early- and late-stage lung cancer, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) of ctDNA has been accepted as a noninvasive tool for early identification and monitoring of cancer mutations.

Department of Microbiology and Infectious Disease Center, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Beijing University, Beijing, 100083, China.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an important clinical problem, which has received more attention in recent decades. It can be induced by small chemical molecules, biological agents, traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), natural medicines (NM), health products (HP), and dietary supplements (DS). Idiosyncratic DILI is far more common than intrinsic DILI clinically and can be classified into hepatocellular injury, cholestatic injury, hepatocellular-cholestatic mixed injury, and vascular injury based on the types of injured target cells.

Methane is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. We investigated the potential neuroprotective effects of methane-rich saline (MS) on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury and determined that its therapeutic benefits are associated with the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Rats received 9min of spinal cord ischemia induced by occlusion of the descending thoracic aorta plus systemic hypotension followed by a single MS treatment (10ml/kg, ip) and 72h reperfusion.

Liver ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury is characterized by defective liver autophagy accompanied by alterations to the endogenous defense system. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) is a natural flavonoid that demonstrates a wide range of physiological functions, and has been implicated as a regulator of autophagy. This study investigates the protective effects of DHM pretreatment on liver injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and elucidates the potential mechanism of DHM-mediated protection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how the osteoprotegerin (OPG) system relates to acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) classification.
  • It involved 210 ACS patients and 200 stable angina patients, measuring serum OPG and its ligand sRANKL, finding significant elevations in ACS and stable angina compared to controls.
  • The results showed that as the number of diseased coronary vessels increased, OPG levels rose while sRANKL levels decreased, correlating with TCM classifications where certain syndromes showed significantly higher OPG levels.

Hypoxia promotes the radioresistance of laryngeal carcinomas and CD133 is one of the markers expressed by tumor-initiating, human laryngeal carcinoma cells. In order to investigate whether CD133-positive Hep-2 cells exhibit a radioresistant phenotype and to determine whether hypoxia promotes this phenotype, we performed a series of experiments. Hep-2 cells, and Hep-2 cells stably expressing hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-targeted small interfering RNA (siRNA) were cultured under hypoxic and normoxic conditions and were treated with varying doses of γ-rays (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 Gy).
