Functional Genomics of Epileptogenesis in Animal Models and Humans.

Cell Mol Neurobiol

October 2021

Health and Sport Sciences Research Group, School of Health and Sport Sciences, Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina, Bogotá, Colombia.

It has been estimated that epilepsies are among the top five neurological diseases with the highest burden of disease. In recent years, genome-wide expression studies (GWES) have been carried out in experimental models of epilepsy and in samples from human patients. In this study, I carried out meta-analyses and analyses of convergence for available GWES for epileptogenesis in humans and in mouse, rat, zebrafish and fruit fly models.

Background: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of inherited metabolic diseases caused by impaired function or absence of lysosomal enzymes involved in degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Clinically, MPS are skeletal dysplasias, characterized by cartilage abnormalities and disturbances in the process of endochondral ossification. Histologic abnormalities of growth cartilage have been reported at advanced stages of the disease, but information regarding growth plate pathology progression either in humans or in animal models, as well as its pathophysiology, is limited.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has provided enhanced chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured in micro-mass without the addition of exogenous growth factors. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that ES of MSCs encapsulated in an injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) - gelatin (GEL) mixture enhances the chondrogenic potential of the hydrogel. Samples were stimulated for 21 days with 10 mV/cm at 60 kHz, applied for 30 min every 6 h a day.

Department of Health Sciences, Public University of Navarra, Navarrabiomed-Biomedical Research Centre, IDISNA-Navarra's Health Research Institute, C/irunlarrea 3, Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra, 31008 Pamplona, Navarra, Spain.

The adverse effects of fat mass on functional dependence might be attenuated or worsened, depending on the level of muscular strength. The aim of this study was to determine (i) the detrimental effect of excess adiposity on dependence in activities of daily living (ADL), and (ii) whether relative handgrip strength (HGS) moderates the adverse effect of excess adiposity on dependence, and to provide the threshold of relative HGS from which the adverse effect could be improved or worsened. A total of 4169 participants (69.

Normal-weight obesity (NWO) has been shown to be associated with cardiometabolic dysfunction. However, little is known regarding this potential relationship in early adulthood. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between NWO and cardiometabolic risk factors in a large population of Colombian young adults.

The short physical performance battery (SPPB) is a physical performance test of lower extremity function designed for non-disabled older adults. We aimed to establish reference values for community-dwelling Colombian adults aged 60 years or older in terms of (1) the total score; (2) the three subtest scores (walking speed, standing balance performance, and five times sit-to-stand test); and (3) the time to complete the five times sit-to-stand test, s and the walking speed test. Additionally, we sought to explore how much of the variance in the SPPB subtest scores could be explained by anthropometric variables (age, body mass, height, body mass index, and calf circumference).

2Laboratory of NeuroPsychiatric Genetics, Biomedical Sciences Research Group, School of Medicine, Universidad Antonio Nariño, Bogotá, Colombia.

The aim of the current study was to test the hypothesis that a functional polymorphism in the synaptosome associated protein 25 () gene could be associated with impulsivity scores in a sample of young Colombian subjects. Impulsivity has been postulated as an endophenotype for several psychiatric disorders of high epidemiological relevance. There is a need for the study of additional candidate genes for impulsivity.

Coping strategies have an impact on substance use disorders (SUD), relapses, and clinical variables, but knowledge on this area is scarce. We explored the coping strategies used during treatment in patients with dual diagnosis (DD), SUD, and severe mental illness (SMI), and the relation with clinical course and relapses at one-year follow-up. A sample of 223 patients was divided into three groups depending on diagnosis: DD ( = 80; SUD with comorbid schizophrenia or major depressive disorder), SUD only ( = 80), and SMI only ( = 63; schizophrenia or major depressive disorder).

In Vitro Evaluation of the Effect of Stimulation with Magnetic Fields on Chondrocytes.

Bioelectromagnetics

January 2020

Biomimetics Laboratory, Instituto de Biotecnología, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia.

Magnetic fields (MFs) have been used as an external stimulus to increase cell proliferation in chondrocytes and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis of articular cartilage. However, previously published studies have not shown that MFs are homogeneous through cell culture systems. In addition, variables such as stimulation times and MF intensities have not been standardized to obtain the best cellular proliferative rate or an increase in molecular synthesis of ECM.
