Background: Web-based cognitive behavioral therapy (wb-CBT) is a scalable way to reach distressed university students. Guided wb-CBT is typically superior to self-guided wb-CBT over short follow-up periods, but evidence is less clear over longer periods.
Objective: This study aimed to compare short-term (3 months) and longer-term (12 months) aggregate effects of guided and self-guided wb-CBT versus treatment as usual (TAU) in a randomized controlled trial of Colombian and Mexican university students and carry out an initially unplanned secondary analysis of the role of differential predicted compliance in explaining these differences.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, specifically empagliflozin and dapagliflozin, on the prevention of heart failure hospitalizations and the improvement of metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) without documented high cardiovascular risk. The study aimed to assess the impact of these treatments on glycemic control, blood pressure, weight, and cardiovascular outcomes over an 18-month follow-up period in a Colombian population.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 122 patients with uncontrolled T2DM at the Clínica Imbanaco in Cali, Colombia.

Background Acromegaly is a rare, chronic, and progressive disorder characterized by excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) after the closure of the epiphyseal plates. The disease has an estimated annual incidence of 5 cases per 1,100,000 individuals. Sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) affects up to 80% of individuals with acromegaly and is recognized as an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.

Publication of articles in international scientific journals has been one of the main strategies for the communication of scientific findings and ideas. Prepublication peer review is a fundamental aspect of the publishing process in indexed scientific journals and, associated with the large growth in journals and articles, there has been a recent challenge in having adequate peer reviewers for international journals. In this article, we provide a short overview of the publishing process, give recommendations to early career researchers about writing peer reviews of adequate quality, and discuss some possibilities for the future.

Treatment involves surgery and pharmacological therapies, focusing on biochemical normalization. This study analyzes the biochemical control in Colombian patients with acromegaly, seeking to improve the understanding of the effects of treatments in the management of the disease.

Background: Heterogeneity of treatment effects (HTEs) can occur because of either differential treatment compliance or differential treatment effectiveness. This distinction is important, as it has action implications, but it is unclear how to distinguish these two possibilities statistically in precision treatment analysis given that compliance is not observed until after randomization. We review available statistical methods and illustrate a recommended method in secondary analysis in a trial focused on HTE.

Aim: To describe the distribution of refractive errors by age and sex among schoolchildren in Soacha, Colombia.
Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted in five urban public schools in the municipality of Soacha. A total of 1161 school-aged and pre-adolescent children, aged 5-12y were examined during the school year 2021-2022.
Endoscopic gastric plication is an emerging procedure for obesity management, facilitated by advances in intraluminal suturing technology. However, concerns persist regarding the complete transfixion of sutures and their long-term durability. We present the case of a 28-year-old patient with a BMI of 31 kg/m² who underwent laparoscopic gastric plication using nonabsorbable sutures to ensure complete transfixion under direct visualization.

Zoledronic acid, or zoledronate, is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate widely used to treat osteoporosis and metastatic bone disease. It inhibits osteoclast function by binding to hydroxyapatite, reducing bone resorption and increasing bone mineral density. Despite its proven efficacy in increasing bone mineral density and reducing the incidence of fractures, adverse effects have been documented, including ocular side effects such as acute anterior uveitis.

Background: Muscle strength is often used as an indirect indicator of metabolic health across different age groups in healthy individuals. However, in kidney transplant recipients, this measure may be less accurate due to metabolic changes induced by immunosuppressive medications.
Aim: To compare muscle strength between kidney transplant recipients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and those without this condition.
The simultaneous occurrence of more than two types of neoplasms is rare due to their significant phenotypic differences. Thyroid carcinoma is regularly associated with genetic alterations and endocrine syndromes. However, the etiology of the forms of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)/medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is still not fully understood.

The use of Lufenuron 50-EC pesticide in oil palm crops affects water quality and aquatic life. This study investigated the adsorption of Lufenuron 50-EC from an aqueous solution using activated carbon derived from oil palm shells (OPSs). Activated carbon (AC) was prepared through physical and chemical activation processes in carbon dioxide environments, using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a chemical activating agent.

Background: Contemporary diagnostic frameworks in the realm of mental health have garnered criticism due to their categorical paradigm. Given the propensity of emotional disorders to manifest overlapping features, these frameworks fall short in comprehensively encapsulating their intricate nature. As a strategic response, Brown and Barlow introduced an innovative composite approach, amalgamating dimensions and categorical classifications, to adress this concern.

This chapter overviews genetic techniques' fundamentals and methodological features, including different approaches, analyses, and applications that have contributed to advancing health and disease. The aim is to describe laboratory methodologies and analyses employed to understand the genetic landscape of different biological contexts, from conventional techniques to cutting-edge technologies. Besides describing detailed aspects of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and derived types as one of the principles for many novel techniques, we also discuss microarray analysis, next-generation sequencing, and genome editing technologies such as transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) and the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated (Cas) systems.

The innovative performance of manufacturing and service companies can be impacted by the existing relationship between open innovation (OI) and the generation of confidentiality agreements (NDAs) as a tool for the protection of intellectual property. Based on the analysis of a cross-sectional sample of 6,798 industrial companies (2019-2020) and 9,304 companies in the service sector (2017-2019) that are part of the directory of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) in its Technological Innovation and Development Survey (EDIT and EDITS), it can be suggested that the interaction of these two variables (OI and NDAs) generate positive effects for the manufacturing industry but negative ones for the service sector. It could be deduced that the positive effect is due to the greater tradition of OI in the manufacturing industry and the negative effect to the caution that the service sector presents when collaborating with external actors.
