Cardiovascular diseases, particularly myocardial infarction, have significant healthcare challenges due to the limited regenerative capacity of injured heart tissue. Cardiac tissue engineering (CTE) offers a promising approach to repairing myocardial damage using biomaterials that mimic the heart's extracellular matrix. This study investigates the potential of graphene nanopowder (Gnp)-enhanced polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds fabricated via electrospinning to improve the properties necessary for effective cardiac repair.

Division of Nutrigenomics, SpliceGen, Therapeutics, Inc., Austin, TX78701, USA; Department of Psychiatry, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, OH45435, USA; Division of Addiction Research & Education, Center for Sports, Exercise & Mental Health, Western University Health Sciences, Pomona, CA91766, USA; Department of Molecular Biology, Adelson School of Medicine, Ariel University, Ariel Israel; Division of Personalized Pain Therapy Research & Education, Center for Advanced Spine Care of Southern Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA.

Several trends toward patient-centered multi-care models employing translational research strategies are currently emerging in orthopaedics. These align seamlessly with epigenetics discussions in pain, a clinical approach to pain management that prioritizes tailoring healthcare to individual needs, preferences, and circumstances. Recognizing the unique genetic and epigenetic factors influencing pain perception, healthcare providers can integrate personalized insights into their patient-centered approach, offering more targeted and effective pain management strategies tailored to each individual's experience.

Objectives: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, first published in 2009, has been widely endorsed and compliance is high in systematic reviews (SRs) of intervention studies. SRs of prevalence studies are increasing in frequency, but their characteristics and reporting quality have not been examined in large studies. Our objectives were to describe the characteristics of SRs of prevalence studies in adults, evaluate the completeness of reporting, and explore study-level characteristics associated with the completeness of reporting.

Background: Video-capsule endoscopy (VCE) is an efficient tool that has proven to be highly useful in approaching several gastrointestinal diseases. VCE was implemented in Colombia in 2003, however current characterization of patients undergoing VCE in Colombia is limited, and mainly comes from two investigations conducted before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic period.

Aim: To describe the characteristics of patients undergoing VCEs and establish the main indications, findings, technical limitations, and other outstanding features.

Article Synopsis
  • - Occupational hand and wrist injuries (OHWIs) represented 20.3% of 2,101 work-related accidents treated in a Colombian hospital, predominantly affecting men aged around 31, especially in the mining industry.
  • - Most injuries involved the right upper extremity, with common types including contusions (42.1%) and lacerations (27.9%), primarily impacting the phalanges of the first finger.
  • - The study highlights the need for targeted preventive measures for specific risk groups, particularly for male miners in Cundinamarca, who face longer rehabilitation and potential permanent limitations due to OHWIs.

Genome-wide association studies are employed to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with several traits. The aim of this study was to perform a GWAS to identify causative variants and genes associated with milk yield, frame, and udder-conformation traits in Gir dairy cattle. Body conformation traits were classified as "frame," and "udder" traits for this study.

Machine Learning Models and Applications for Early Detection.

Sensors (Basel)

July 2024

Facultad de Minas, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín 050034, Colombia.

From the various perspectives of machine learning (ML) and the multiple models used in this discipline, there is an approach aimed at training models for the early detection (ED) of anomalies. The early detection of anomalies is crucial in multiple areas of knowledge since identifying and classifying them allows for early decision making and provides a better response to mitigate the negative effects caused by late detection in any system. This article presents a literature review to examine which machine learning models (MLMs) operate with a focus on ED in a multidisciplinary manner and, specifically, how these models work in the field of fraud detection.

Biopolymers are polymers of natural origin and are environmentally friendly, carbon neutral and less energy-intense additives that can be used for various geotechnical applications. Biopolymers like xanthan gum, carrageenan, chitosan, agar, gellan gum and gelatin have shown potential for improving subgrade strength, erosion resistance, and as canal liners and in slope stabilization. But minimal research has been carried out on cellulose-based biopolymers, particularly microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), for their application in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), major depressive disorder (MDD) is the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide and the second most common disease after cardiovascular events. Approximately 280 million people live with MDD, with incidence varying by age and gender (female to male ratio of approximately 2:1). Although a variety of antidepressants are available for the different forms of MDD, there is still a high degree of individual variability in response and tolerability.

Cannulation strategies in aortic arch surgeries are a matter of immense discussion. Majority of time deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is the way out, but it does come with its set of demerits. Here we demonstrate a case with aortic arch dissection dealt with dual cannulation strategy in axillary and femoral artery without need for DHCA and ensuring complete neuroprotection of brain and spinal cord without hinderance of time factor.
