Background: Schizencephaly and encephaloceles are rare developmental birth defects, with the former involving abnormal clefts in the cerebral hemispheres connected to the ventricular system and the latter involving a neural tube defect characterized by the protrusion of brain tissue through an abnormal skull opening. These conditions are individually uncommon, and their simultaneous occurrence in a single patient is exceedingly unusual.

Observations: This case report explores the intersection of these two rare congenital malformations in a 2-month-old female patient from an indigenous community in a rural area of Colombia.

  • - The study investigates the prescription patterns of noninsulin antidiabetic medications among 155,381 Colombian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), primarily focusing on the most commonly prescribed drugs and their usage in combination therapy.
  • - Metformin emerged as the most frequently prescribed antidiabetic, followed by empagliflozin, sitagliptin, linagliptin, and dapagliflozin, with a significant portion of patients (55.5%) receiving combinations of two or three medications.
  • - Despite advancements in treatment guidelines, many T2DM patients with related cardiovascular conditions are not receiving optimal antidiabetic therapy, indicating a need for better access to drugs that might reduce cardiovascular risk, like sodium

Dengue is the most important viral vector-borne disease in the tropics, with Colombia being one of the most affected countries. In this context, it is essential to identify and synthesize the existing evidence on the epidemiology of dengue in Colombia. A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42021257985) was conducted by searching for epidemiological data in populations with suspected or confirmed dengue in Colombia from 2012 to 2020.

Objectives: To determine the general state of scientific evidence published in the last 20 years on gastric signet ring cell (SRC) adenocarcinoma metastatic to the breast, and present a case.

Material And Methods: The case of a patient who attended a high-complexity reference institution in Bogotá for a breast metastasis from a gastric SRC adenocarcinoma is reported. A Systematic Review of the literature was carried out, including cohort studies, reports and case series of patients with gastric SRC adenocarcinoma metastatic to the breast, which will present information on the epidemiology, clinical, radiological and histopathological characteristics, and the treatment and prognostic of this disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where it poses a significant burden. In Latin America, the estimated prevalence of COPD is notably high, but the management and treatment of the disease have progressed slowly. This review examines the current status of inhalation therapy for COPD in Latin America, focusing on pharmacological therapies, inhalation devices, and the potential of advanced drug delivery systems.

Despite the global nature of psychological issues, an overwhelming majority of research originates from a small segment of the world's population living in high-income countries (HICs). This disparity risks distorting our understanding of psychological phenomena by underrepresenting the cultural and contextual diversity of human experience. Research from lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC) is also less frequently cited, both because it is seemingly viewed as a "special case" and because it is less well known due to language differences and biases in indexing algorithms.

  • The study focuses on the role of specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), proposing that it could serve as a better biomarker for type-2 inflammation compared to total IgE.
  • Researchers measured both serum (SsIgE) and nasosinusal (NsIgE) sIgE levels against various allergens in 174 CRS patients, finding a significant correlation between sIgE presence and clinical features like nasal polyps and asthma.
  • Results indicated that SsIgE had a higher diagnostic accuracy (79.4%) for predicting outcomes of nasal challenge tests compared to total IgE, suggesting a need for further research into treatments like allerg

Influence of Heat Treatment Temperature on Microstructure, Hardness and Sensitization of UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel.

Materials (Basel)

September 2024

Postgraduate Program in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), Campus Ecoville, Curitiba 81280-34, PR, Brazil.

Improper thermal cycles on duplex stainless steels can lead to the formation of detrimental phases or alter the proportion of ferrite and austenite phases, thus influencing the material's mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging (at 850 and 950 °C) and solubilization (at 1000 and 1150 °C) thermal treatments on microstructure, indentation hardness, elasticity modulus, and susceptibility to intergranular corrosion of UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel. The sigma phase (σ) formation in the aged samples, with hardness values between 8 and 10 GPa, was confirmed.

Despite recent advancements in colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, particularly with the introduction of immunotherapy and checkpoint inhibitors, the efficacy of these therapies remains limited to a subset of patients. To address this challenge, our study aimed to develop a prognostic biomarker based on immune-related genes to predict better outcomes in CRC patients and aid in treatment decision-making. We comprehensively analysed immune gene expression signatures associated with CRC prognosis to construct an immune meta-signature with prognostic potential.

It has been reported that the DAA can resolve in the immediate postnatal stage and do not generate any consequences for the neonate. However, have been described some cases in which the DAA is complicated due to thromboembolic events, rupture of the lesion, respiratory symptoms, and even death.
