Introduction: Living kidney donation is currently low in Colombia, and this is associated with the lack of knowledge of the risks and renal function outcomes of potential donors; there are no studies that evaluate these outcomes. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of renal function, the incidence of metabolic diseases, arterial hypertension, as well as the finding of albuminuria and/or proteinuria in living kidney donors with a 2-year follow-up post donation.

Methods: Observational study in living kidney donor patients, in which renal function outcomes were evaluated between the predonation period and up to 24 months postdonation.

Transport intoxication in the form of body stuffing, a dangerous practice involving the ingestion or insertion of psychoactive substances into the body to evade detection during drug trafficking, represents a major medical problem that requires immediate attention in the emergency department. Unlike body packing, where substances are encapsulated and swallowed for later extraction, body stuffing involves direct ingestion without wrapping, which greatly increases the risk of serious intoxication and even death. Benzodiazepines, due to their high demand on the black market, are among the most common drugs used in body stuffing.

The simultaneous occurrence of more than two types of neoplasms is rare due to their significant phenotypic differences. Thyroid carcinoma is regularly associated with genetic alterations and endocrine syndromes. However, the etiology of the forms of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)/medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is still not fully understood.

Background: The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery hosted the third in a series of webinars focused on innovative endoscopic spine surgery techniques. This session aimed to discuss and evaluate advanced treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis and related conditions utilizing multiportal endoscopic approaches; articulating instruments; unilateral biportal endoscopy; transforaminal techniques for facet cysts, herniated disc, and spinal stenosis; as well as percutaneous endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (PELIF).

Objective: To analyze the level of surgeon endorsement for the presented endoscopic spine surgery techniques before and after the webinar, utilizing polytomous Rasch analysis, and to evaluate the potential for these insights to inform clinical guideline recommendations.

[Mitochondrial adaptations in acute respiratory distress syndrome].

Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc

May 2024

Fundación Universitaria María Cano, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud. Santiago de Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.

Mitochondria play an important role in cell energy metabolism due to the main function of producing biologically available energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), through biochemical processes such as oxidative phosphorylation, beta oxidation of fatty acids and the Krebs cycle. Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a severe lung disease characterized by the appearance of diffuse alveolar infiltrates, dysregulated immune response and alveolocapillary injury that limits gas exchange. Alveolar cells maintain an oxygen tension of 5% and mitochondria consume oxygen through the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme in the electron transport chain, allowing ATP production.

  • GLP1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) are medications that mimic the incretin hormone GLP1, first used for diabetes in 2005 and for obesity in 2014.
  • Recent studies suggest that GLP1-RAs may also help slow kidney disease progression, leading to the Flow study, which examined semaglutide's effects.
  • The Flow study confirmed semaglutide's benefits on kidney health, but the exact mechanisms of how GLP1-RAs affect renal function remain unclear, necessitating further research.

Low and sustained doses of erythropoietin prevent preterm infants from intraventricular hemorrhage.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

January 2025

Centre de Recherche de l'Institut Universitaire de Cardiologie et de Pneumologie de Quebec, Universite Laval, Quebec City, Quebec,  Canada; Brain Research Center, High Altitude Research Foundation, La Paz, Bolivia. Electronic address:

In addition to its hematopoietic function, erythropoietin (EPO) has demonstrated neuroprotective properties in preclinical studies, particularly in cases of reduced oxygenation or ischemia in the neonatal brain. While these findings have sparked optimism for its potential clinical application, the efficacy of EPO remains contentious in translational assays. Notably, while repeated administration of low doses of EPO has correlated with a decrease in adverse outcomes, the use of high EPO doses has shown either negligible or potentially detrimental effects on the incidence of brain injury.
