Article Synopsis
  • Neurological issues are prevalent in children hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2-related multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), potentially leading to lasting cognitive and functional problems.
  • This study investigates how severe neurological symptoms during hospitalization relate to new cognitive and functional impairments upon discharge among children under 18.
  • Over 3,500 patients were examined, revealing that those with severe neurological manifestations had a higher likelihood of experiencing new morbidities at discharge compared to those without such issues.

The contamination of water bodies by synthetic organic compounds coupled with climate change and the growing demand for water supply calls for new approaches to water management and treatment. To tackle the decontamination issue, the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using copper magnetic ferrite (CuMF) nanoparticles prepared under distinct synthesis conditions was assessed to oxidize imidacloprid (IMD) insecticide. After optimization of some operational variables, such as CuMF load (62.

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae): Diversity of potential Leishmania vectors in northern Colombia.

Acta Trop

September 2024

Grupo Interdisciplinario en Ciencias Marinas y Ambientales (GICMARA), Facultad de Ciencias Básicas, Universidad del Atlántico, Puerto Colombia, Colombia; Departamento de Patología y Medicina Preventiva, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, Universidad de Concepción, Chillán, Chile. Electronic address:

Phlebotomine sand flies are critical vectors of Leishmania parasites, impacting public health significantly. This study focused on assessing the diversity of sand flies in a rural area of El Carmen de Bolívar Municipality, northern Colombia, employing rarefaction curves and Hill numbers to understand potential vector communities and inform environmental management. From January 2018 to April 2019 (five samplings), sand flies were collected using CDC light traps with blue LED in domestic/peridomestic/sylvatic ecotopes, identifying species per Young and Duncan (1994) and Galati (2003).

Objectives: This study aims to describe resting state networks (RSN) in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC)s after acute severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: Adult patients with TBI with a GCS score <8 who remained in a coma, minimally conscious state (MCS), or unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS), between 2017 and 2020 were included. Blood-oxygen-level dependent imaging was performed to compare their RSN with 10 healthy volunteers.

Article Synopsis
  • Mpox, a zoonotic disease that became widespread in 2022, lacks comprehensive reviews on its occurrence in animals, prompting a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine its prevalence.
  • The study evaluated 15 reports and revealed a pooled prevalence of 16.0% in non-human primates, 8.0% in rodents, and 1.0% in shrews based on molecular or serological tests conducted on 2,680 animals.
  • The research highlights the need for further studies in various animal species to understand Mpox's natural infection rates and stresses the importance of a OneHealth approach for effective public health strategies.

Department of Health, Ethics and Society, Department of Social Medicine, Department of Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Leprosy is an infectious neglected tropical disease, which can cause irreversible disabilities if not diagnosed in time. Colombia continues to show high rates of leprosy-related disability, mainly due to a delay in diagnosis. Limited knowledge is available that explains this delay, therefore our study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of leprosy health professionals with the delay in leprosy diagnosis in the Cesar and Valle del Cauca departments, Colombia.

Article Synopsis
  • Bovine tuberculosis is a significant zoonotic disease affecting cattle in Colombia, where few studies have examined its behavior and none used GIS for mapping its distribution.
  • A study analyzed reports from the Colombian Agricultural Institute from 2001 to 2019 to track the disease's temporal and spatial patterns, involving data management through Microsoft Access 365 and mapping with QGIS software.
  • Throughout the 19-year period, 5,273 cases were reported, with notable fluctuations in case numbers, peaking in 2015 and showing zero cases in certain years, highlighting the importance of GIS in understanding zoonotic diseases and their implications for public health.

The innovative performance of manufacturing and service companies can be impacted by the existing relationship between open innovation (OI) and the generation of confidentiality agreements (NDAs) as a tool for the protection of intellectual property. Based on the analysis of a cross-sectional sample of 6,798 industrial companies (2019-2020) and 9,304 companies in the service sector (2017-2019) that are part of the directory of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) in its Technological Innovation and Development Survey (EDIT and EDITS), it can be suggested that the interaction of these two variables (OI and NDAs) generate positive effects for the manufacturing industry but negative ones for the service sector. It could be deduced that the positive effect is due to the greater tradition of OI in the manufacturing industry and the negative effect to the caution that the service sector presents when collaborating with external actors.

Annotated bibliography of genetic addiction risk severity (GARS) publications, pro-dopamine regulation in nutraceuticals (KB220 nutraceutical variants), and policy documents. Further research is required to encourage the field to consider "Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) Anti-addiction Modeling" which involves early risk identification by means of genetic assessment similar to GARS, followed by induction of dopamine homeostasis by means of genetically guided pro-dopamine regulation similar to KB220. These results suggest that genetically based treatments may be a missing piece in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD).

We present a case of obstruction in the third portion of the duodenum secondary to a phytobezoar in an adult patient with no surgical history and without a vegan diet. High intestinal obstruction due to a phytobezoar is rarely described in the literature, posing a diagnostic challenge when evaluating potential differentials in the emergency setting. Subsequently, we conduct a review focusing on tomographic findings and the surgical specimen, highlighting key points to consider when addressing such pathologies.

Objective: Arboviruses pose a challenge in ensuring the supply of pathogen-free blood components because they are not routinely screened in blood banks, and blood components from infected asymptomatic donors could be transfused. This study aimed to detect and characterize arboviral infections in Colombian blood donors.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, the prevalence of dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses and co-infections of blood donors were compared between an epidemic period (November 2019-February 2020,  = 462) and an endemic period (November 2021-August 2022,  = 1,119).
