Ophidism is a public health problem in tropical countries, occurring predominantly in rural areas. In Colombia, among the species responsible for snakebite envenomation, inflicting high mortality, is the Chocoan bushmaster, , better known locally by the names " (warty)" and " (rot-causing)". In this research, the cardiotoxic effect of the venom of in male Wistar rats weighing 230 ± 20 g was evaluated.

Purpose: Anterior plagiocephaly ( AP), secondary to isolated frontosphenoidal synostosis (IFS), represents one of the rarest forms of craniosynostosis documented in medical literature. Therefore, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the long-term (> 2 years) postoperative outcomes of this minor suture synostosis.

Methods: This study presents the long-term outcomes of two patients previously treated for IFS, detailing their clinical, imaging, and postoperative characteristics.

Grupo Interdisciplinario en Ciencias Marinas y Ambientales (GICMARA), Facultad de Ciencias Básicas, Universidad del Atlántico, Puerto Colombia, Colombia; Departamento de Patología y Medicina Preventiva, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, Universidad de Concepción, Chillán, Chile. Electronic address:

Phlebotomine sand flies are critical vectors of Leishmania parasites, impacting public health significantly. This study focused on assessing the diversity of sand flies in a rural area of El Carmen de Bolívar Municipality, northern Colombia, employing rarefaction curves and Hill numbers to understand potential vector communities and inform environmental management. From January 2018 to April 2019 (five samplings), sand flies were collected using CDC light traps with blue LED in domestic/peridomestic/sylvatic ecotopes, identifying species per Young and Duncan (1994) and Galati (2003).

We present a case of obstruction in the third portion of the duodenum secondary to a phytobezoar in an adult patient with no surgical history and without a vegan diet. High intestinal obstruction due to a phytobezoar is rarely described in the literature, posing a diagnostic challenge when evaluating potential differentials in the emergency setting. Subsequently, we conduct a review focusing on tomographic findings and the surgical specimen, highlighting key points to consider when addressing such pathologies.

March 2024

Departamento de Anatomía y Embriología Humanas, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Cádiz, 11003 Cadiz, Spain.

Neurogenesis is the process of forming new neurons from neural stem cells (NSCs). In adults, this process takes place in specific areas of the brain, known as neurogenic niches. These regions have unique anatomical features that have been studied in animal models and in the human brain; however, there are differences between these models that need to be addressed.

Departamento de Biologia Estrutural e Funcional, Instituto de Biosciências, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, SP, Brasil.

Germ cell transplantation in fish is a promising technique for surrogate broodstock parents with broader application in aquaculture and conserving endangered and valuable genetic resources. Herein, we describe the establishment of an intrapapillary xenogeneic transplant of germ cells from sexually mature goldfish () males into common carp () males cytoablated with a thermochemical treatment (two doses of busulfan at 40 mg/kg at 35°C). To analyze the presence and development of donor germ cells in recipient testes, donor germ cells were labeled with PKH26, a fluorescent cell membrane dye, before transplantation.

One of the main challenges in the clinical management of dengue is the early identification of cases that could progress to severe forms of the disease. A biomarker that may enable this identification is the presence of genetic polymorphisms in genes associated with immune responses. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of the Latin American literature on these genes.

Background: The emergency derived from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has taught us important lessons in public and environmental health, particularly in the alarming numbers of existing noncommunicable diseases. However, one aspect to which little attention has been paid during the pandemic is mental health and its relationship with the gender perspective, in spite of gender being a determinant associated with health. In contrast, regarding health, few schemes and theories consider health from a positive and comprehensive perspective.

During infection in pregnancy, VAR2CSA is expressed on the surface of infected erythrocytes (IEs) and mediates their sequestration in the placenta. As a result, antibodies to VAR2CSA are largely restricted to women who were infected during pregnancy. However, we discovered that VAR2CSA antibodies can also be elicited by Duffy binding protein (PvDBP).

Background: Family functionality is that which promotes the integral development of its members, as well as a favorable state of health in them; fulfilling the basic parameters of adaptation, participation, growth, affection, and resources. Family dysfunction is understood as the failure to comply with any of these functions due to an alteration in one or more of the subsystems.

Objective: There is little research on variables related to family functioning with a case-control design, for this reason, we present the family functioning of school students, identify variables found to be related to family functioning, and describe a model of variables related to family dysfunction.

Motivation for the study: there is a lack of studies in Latin America on the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients who receive liver transplants. Main findings: two-thirds (66%) of patients who received liver transplantation between 2013 and 2017 at the Specialized Center San Vicente Fundación de Rionegro, Antioquia, Colombia, subsequently presented metabolic syndrome. Implications: this study confirms that liver transplant recipients very frequently develop metabolic syndrome; however, the frequency found by this study (66%) was almost double that reported in other regions of the world, suggesting that patients from the Specialized Center San Vicente Fundación de Rionegro, Antioquia, Colombia, may present some additional condition.
