Background: Endoscopic surgery is currently a standard procedure in many countries. Furthermore, conventional four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy is developing into a single-port procedure. However, in many developing countries, disposable medical products are expensive and adequate medical waste disposable facilities are absent.

A 72-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of upper abdominal pain and back pain. Advanced gastric cancer was found at the fundus of the stomach, and severe dysplasia was found at the lower esophagus. We proceeded with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (S-1+CDDP) because the lymph nodes in the lesser curvature of the stomach were metastasized and invasion of the pancreas and some vessels was suspected by computed tomography.

Background: Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome. We have recently demonstrated that the administration of edaravone before reperfusion attenuated reperfusion injury in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Methods: Plasma MCP-1 levels were measured in 45 consecutive patients with AMI (edaravone group, n=25; control group, n=20).

This clinical pilot study was a randomized, controlled, open-label study in 80 patients with acute myocardial infarction and was designed to examine the effects of a novel free radical scavenger, edaravone. Administration of edaravone before myocardial reperfusion was associated with smaller enzymatic infarcts and better clinical outcome.

Five pilomatrixomas with anetodermic cutaneous changes are presented. Four large tumors revealed soft, atrophic, pink translucent skin covering a firm subcutaneous mass, and their appearance was similar to that of a keloid or hypertrophic scar. One small tumor revealed soft, slightly atrophic, reddened or purplish skin covering a firm subcutaneous mass: its clinical appearance was similar to that of a hematoma or minor infection.

The elastic pressure/volume (P/V) curve obtained by the multiple linear regression (MLR) technique using a new model, was compared with the quasi-static P/V points obtained by the rapid airway occlusion technique. Seven infants were studied during mechanical ventilation using a pressure controlled mode. The resistive pressure was subtracted from airway opening pressure, thus determining the elastance related pressure, which was then plotted against the volume to make an MLR-elastance curve.

Plast Reconstr Surg

December 2000

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Fukuoka Tokushukai Medical Center, Japan.

This study reports the authors' 5-year experience with treating lower extremity injuries in bicycle passengers caused by the spokes. This patient group was selected from 716 lower extremity injuries that received treatment at our outpatient plastic surgery clinic. A total of 26 patients were treated during the study.

We evaluated the usefulness of endovascular treatment of posterior circulation aneurysms with GDCs and IDCs. Five cases were treated with IDCs, and 15 cases were treated with GDCs. In this study, 8 aneurysms were identified at the basilar bifurcation, 3 at the PI segment of the posterior cerebral artery, 1 at the origin of the superior cerebellar artery, 2 at the vertebrobasilar junction, 1 at the origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, 1 at the distal anterior inferior cerebellar artery, and 4 dissecting aneurysms at the vertebral artery.

The authors evaluated the embolization effects on experimental aneurysm models with a liquid material. This material is a mixture of poly (HEMA-co-MMA), Iopamidol, water and a small amount of ethyl alcohol. We have satisfactorily treated over 30 cases of AVM with this material.

Characteristics of a newly developed liquid material for embolization of AVM and its clinical experiments are reported. This liquid is composed of dissolving poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) in Iopamiron with adding a small amount of ethyl alcohol. Thirty-two cases of AVM and 5 cases of spinal AVM were embolized with this liquid with good results.

Interventional radiology is becoming one of the standard treatments of arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Cyanoacrylate derivatives and polymer solutions are widely used to occlude the AVM nidus by their injection through a catheter, but they are far from satisfactory embolic liquids. For instance, cyanoacrylate derivatives sometimes glue the catheter to the artery, resulting in serious complications; in addition, the organic solvents used to dissolve polymers cause damage to the surrounding brain tissue of the AVM.
