Background: Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) infection is a common cause of exacerbations in pediatric patients with asthma. However, the effects of corticosteroids on HRV-induced exacerbations in pediatric asthma are unknown. We conducted a prospective observational study to determine the viral pathogens in school-age pediatric inpatients with asthma exacerbations.

Background: Studies on the association between preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) and dementia are limited. Indeed, PRISm has often been overlooked or ignored as an index of lung function impairment. Therefore, we investigated the association of PRISm with the risk for the development of dementia in an older Japanese population.

Background: We determined the effects and an accurate marker of periodontal treatment on serum interleukin (IL)-6 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP) levels in systemically healthy individuals with periodontal disease.
Methods: This multicenter study included systemically healthy individuals with periodontal disease who received initial periodontal treatment and had no periodontal treatment history. Periodontal parameters, including periodontal inflamed surface area, masticatory efficiency, and periodontal disease classification; serum IL-6 and HsCRP levels; and serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G titers against periodontal pathogens were evaluated at baseline and after treatment.

Significance: Evaluation of biological chromophore levels is useful for detection of various skin diseases, including cancer, monitoring of health status and tissue metabolism, and assessment of clinical and physiological vascular functions. Clinically, it is useful to assess multiple different chromophores with a single technique or instrument.
Aim: To investigate the possibility of estimating the concentration of four chromophores, bilirubin, oxygenated hemoglobin, deoxygenated hemoglobin, and melanin from diffuse reflectance spectra in the visible region.

Enamel forming ameloblasts move away from the dentino-enamel junction and also move relative to each other to establish enamel shape during the secretory stage of enamel development. Matrix metalloproteinase-20 (MMP20) is a tooth specific proteinase essential for proper enamel formation. We previously reported that MMP20 cleaves cadherins and may regulate ameloblast movement.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is one of the most common immune disorders characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, especially involving the respiratory tract and mucosal surfaces of the mouth, gingiva, and nasal sinus. Because dental surgery and general anesthesia may pose an increased risk for systemic infections, management of IgA-deficient patients requires caution during dental procedures and intubated general anesthesia. We report a 5-year-old female patient with IgA deficiency who underwent extraction of 18 deciduous teeth under general anesthesia.

Background: The effects of oral health on mortality have been reported; however, the association between mortality and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHQOL) is unknown. We investigated the effect of OHQOL on total mortality in a cohort consisting of dentists.
Methods: In this cohort study, we analyzed data from the Longitudinal Evaluation of Multi-phasic, Odonatological and Nutritional Associations in Dentists study.

Adipocytic neoplasms are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT) is a locally aggressive but non-metastasizing adipocytic neoplasm that primarily occurs in the proximal extremities of middle-aged to older adults. Histologically, ALT is divided into adipocytic (lipoma-like), sclerosing and inflammatory subtypes.

The liver has long been deemed a tolerogenic organ. We employed high-dimensional mass cytometry and immunohistochemistry to depict the temporal and spatial dynamics of immune cells in the spleen and liver in a murine model of spontaneous liver allograft acceptance. We depicted the immune landscape of spontaneous liver tolerance throughout the rejection and acceptance stages after liver transplantation and highlighted several points of importance.

Microglia play versatile roles in progression of and protection against neuroinflammatory diseases. Little is known, however, about the mechanisms underlying the diverse reactivity of microglia to inflammatory conditions. We investigated how human induced microglia-like (iMG) cells respond to innate immune ligands.
