Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of two types of bioresorbable flow diverters made from a magnesium alloy: bare and PLLA-coated, comparing their bioresorption and biocompatibility in a rabbit vascular model.
  • Both types of MgBRFDs were mechanically tested and implanted into rabbits; results showed that while both had good biocompatibility, the PLLA-coated version exhibited better preservation of structure and lower inflammation over time.
  • The research concludes that the PLLA-coated MgBRFD is more clinically feasible for human use due to its slower bioresorption rate, allowing for improved performance during the healing process.

Usefulness of Nutritional Assessment Indicators in Predicting Treatment Discontinuation Due to Adverse Events from PARP Inhibitors in Ovarian Cancer Patients.

Cancers (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Fukui, 23-3 Matsuokashimoaiduki, Yoshida-Gun, Eiheiji-Cho, Fukui 910-1104, Japan.

Background: Nutritional status is an important factor influencing toxicity of treatment. Nutritional assessment indicators such as the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) have been reported to be associated with treatment-related adverse events (AEs) for various malignancies. However, there are no reports investigating the relationship between nutritional status and AEs from poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi), which are widely used in recent years as maintenance therapy for ovarian cancer.

Cereb Cortex

June 2024

Department of Epilepsy, Movement Disorders and Physiology, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, 54 Kawaharacho, Shogoin, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8507, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • This study revisits the basal temporal language area (BTLA) using electrical cortical stimulation (ECS) to analyze its role in the Japanese language among 11 patients with focal epilepsy.
  • It creates a functional density map highlighting the BTLA's anatomical features and found that spoken-word tasks were more affected by ECS than reading tasks, indicating different levels of language processing.
  • The findings suggest a functional gradient in the BTLA, with the front involved in broader semantic processing and the back, particularly the middle fusiform gyrus, focused on specific types of input.

Improved artificial intelligence discrimination of minor histological populations by supplementing with color-adjusted images.

Sci Rep

November 2023

Division of Molecular Pathology, Department of Pathological Sciences, University of Fukui, 23-3 Matsuoka-Shimoaizuki, Eiheiji, Fukui, 910-1193, Japan.

Despite the dedicated research of artificial intelligence (AI) for pathological images, the construction of AI applicable to histopathological tissue subtypes, is limited by insufficient dataset collection owing to disease infrequency. Here, we present a solution involving the addition of supplemental tissue array (TA) images that are adjusted to the tonality of the main data using a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) to the training data for rare tissue types. F1 scores of rare tissue types that constitute < 1.

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that percutaneous pedicle screw (PPS) posterior fixation without anterior debridement for pyogenic spondylitis can improve patient quality of life compared with conservative treatment. However, data on the risk of recurrence after PPS posterior fixation compared with conservative treatment is lacking. The aim of this study was to compare the recurrence rate of pyogenic spondylitis after PPS posterior fixation without anterior debridement and conservative treatment.

Case: The accordion phenomenon is defined as the difference in the disc space observed on x-ray or computed tomography images taken in both standing and supine positions, which results in a discrepancy of local spinal alignment. Oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) is a less invasive method of potentially correcting both coronal and sagittal spinal alignment. We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis treated with OLIF for degenerative disc disease presenting with hyperlordosis and negative sagittal vertical axis (SVA) because of the accordion phenomenon.
