Phenotypic and genetic spectra of galactose mutarotase deficiency: A nationwide survey conducted in Japan.

Purpose: Galactose mutarotase (GALM) deficiency was first reported in 2019 as the fourth type of galactosemia. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and genotypic spectra of GALM deficiency.

Methods: This was a questionnaire-based retrospective survey conducted in Japan between February 2022 and March 2023.

Herein, we report the case of a 7-year-old girl with a history of atopic dermatitis because of infancy. Her grandfather grew Egoma (Perilla frutescens), and her family frequently consumed food items prepared using Egoma; however, she never consumed them because she did not enjoy these food items; she experienced vomiting, facial swelling, and oral discomfort upon ingesting Egoma during school lunch for the first time. Her food oral challenge test was positive, as well as a skin-prick test with sesame powder.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN), as a complication of diabetes, is a substantial healthcare challenge owing to the high risk of morbidity and mortality involved. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of DN, more efficient models are required to develop new therapeutics. Here, we created a DN model in zebrafish by crossing diabetic Tg(acta1:dnIGF1R-EGFP) and proteinuria-tracing Tg(l-fabp::VDBP-GFP) lines, named zMIR/VDBP.

Outcomes of 881 Consecutive Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients Using Heartstring Device.

Backgrounds:  One of the strategies to prevent stroke after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may be the use of a device for proximal anastomosis without partial clamp of the ascending aorta.

Methods:  We retrospectively investigated early and late outcomes in consecutive 881 patients undergoing isolated CABG using Heartstring for proximal anastomosis from January 2008 to December 2022, to reveal the validity to use it. All patients underwent preoperative imaging workups to evaluate neurovascular atherosclerosis.

Protocol for the nationwide registry of patients with polycystic kidney disease: japanese national registry of PKD (JRP).

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) are major genetic polycystic kidney diseases that can progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Longitudinal data on the clinical characteristics associated with clinical outcomes in polycystic kidney disease (PKD), including the development of ESKD and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are lacking in Japan. To address this unmet need the authors are establishing a novel, web-based, Nationwide Cohort Registry Study-the Japanese Registry of PKD (JRP).

Mitochondrial DNA in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid is associated with the prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: a single cohort study.

Background: Extracellular mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is released from damaged cells and increases in the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients. While increased levels of serum mtDNA have been reported to be linked to disease progression and the future development of acute exacerbation (AE) of IPF (AE-IPF), the clinical significance of mtDNA in BALF (BALF-mtDNA) remains unclear. We investigated the relationships between BALF-mtDNA levels and other clinical variables and prognosis in IPF.

CYP19A1 Expression Is Controlled by mRNA Stability of the Upstream Transcription Factor AP-2γ in Placental JEG3 Cells.

CYP19A1 encodes aromatase, which converts testosterone to estrogen, and is induced during placental maturation. To elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying this function, histone methylation was analyzed using the placental cytotrophoblast cell line, JEG3. Treatment of JEG3 cells with 3-deazaneplanocin A, an inhibitor of several methyltransferases, resulted in increased CYP19A1 expression, accompanied by removal of the repressive mark H3K27me3 from the CYP19A1 promoter.

Contributions of endoscopic ultrasonography-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) to the diagnostics of biliary stricture and gallbladder lesions.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) provides high spatial resolution and more detailed images than other diagnostic modalities. Furthermore, EUS-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA), such as EUS-guided fine needle aspiration or biopsy (EUS-FNA/FNB), is an indispensable tool in pancreaticobiliary disease diagnostics, supporting a conclusive pathological diagnosis. In this review, we evaluate the current status and the usefulness of EUS-TA for the diagnostics of the following biliary tract diseases: (A) biliary stricture diagnostics, (B) biliary tract cancer (BTC) itself, and (C) staging of advanced BTC.

Risk Factors for Thrombocytopenia Induced by Capecitabine Plus Oxaliplatin Therapy in Patients With Colorectal Cancer.

Background/aim: Capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CapeOX) therapy is used as an adjuvant chemotherapy regimen for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Although oxaliplatin induces thrombocytopenia, the risk factors for thrombocytopenia in oxaliplatin-treated patients with CRC are not well established. We aimed to investigate the risk factors for thrombocytopenia in CapeOX-treated patients with CRC.

Clinical features of immature leukemias in children.

Early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL), mixed phenotypic acute leukemia (MPAL), and acute myeloid leukemia with minimal differentiation (AML-M0) all originate from immature hematopoietic progenitor cells and have a poor prognosis. We investigated the clinical characteristics of these immature leukemias in 17 children (ETP-ALL: 8, MPAL: 5, AML-M0: 4) at seven institutions. Clinical and laboratory findings were comparable across disease types.

Post-marketing surveillance of quetiapine fumarate extended-release tablets in patients with bipolar depression.

Aim: This study aimed to verify the real-world efficacy and safety of quetiapine fumarate extended-release tablets (Bipresso® 50 mg and 150 mg; marketing authorization holder is KYOWA Pharmaceutical Industry Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan) in patients with bipolar depression.

Prediction Model for Severe Thrombocytopenia Induced by Gemcitabine Plus Cisplatin Combination Therapy in Patients with Urothelial Cancer.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia is often a use-limiting adverse reaction to gemcitabine and cisplatin (GC) combination chemotherapy, reducing therapeutic intensity, and, in some cases, requiring platelet transfusion.

Objective: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with urothelial cancer at the initiation of GC combination therapy and the objective was to develop a prediction model for the incidence of severe thrombocytopenia using machine learning.

Methods: We performed receiver operating characteristic analysis to determine the cut-off values of the associated factors.

Pulmonary function and chest CT abnormalities 3 months after discharge from COVID-19, 2020-2021: A nation-wide multicenter prospective cohort study from the Japanese respiratory society.

Background: No comprehensive analysis of the pulmonary sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Japan based on respiratory function tests and chest computed tomography (CT) has been reported. We evaluated post-COVID-19 conditions, especially focusing on pulmonary sequelae assessed by pulmonary function tests and chest CT.

Methods: For this prospective cohort study, we enrolled 1069 patients who presented pneumonia at the time of admission in 55 hospitals from February 2020 to September 2021.

Global Outcomes Benchmarks in Laparoscopic Liver Surgery for Segments 7 and 8: International Multicenter Analysis.

Background: In recent years, there has been growing interest in laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and the audit of the results of surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to define reference values for LLR in segments 7 and 8.

Study Design: Data on LLR in segments 7 and 8 between January 2000 and December 2020 were collected from 19 expert centers.

Native-lung complications following single-lung transplantation for interstitial lung disease: an in-depth analysis.

Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) represents a heterogeneous group of lung disorders characterized by fibrotic lung tissue changes. In regions with severe donor shortages, single-lung transplantation (SLTx) is often preferred over bilateral lung transplantation for advanced ILD. However, temporal changes and complications in the retained native lung remain poorly understood.

Impact of concurrent antibody-drug conjugates and radiotherapy on symptomatic radiation necrosis in breast cancer patients with brain metastases: a multicenter retrospective study.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the impact of concurrent antibody-drug conjugates (ADC) and radiotherapy on symptomatic radiation necrosis (SRN) in breast cancer patients with brain metastases (BM).

Methods: This multicenter retrospective study uses four institutional data. Eligibility criteria were histologically proven breast cancer, diagnosed BM with gadolinium-enhanced MRI, a Karnofsky performance status of 60 or higher, and radiotherapy for all BM lesions between 2017 and 2022.

Single-Cell Transcriptomic Analysis of Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can lead to infectious mononucleosis (EBV-IM) and, more rarely, EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH), which is characterized by a life-threatening hyperinflammatory cytokine storm with immune dysregulation. Interferon-gamma (IFNγ) has been identified as a critical mediator for primary HLH; however, the detailed role of IFNγ and other cytokines in EBV-HLH is not fully understood. In this study, we used single-cell RNA sequencing to characterize the immune landscape of EBV-HLH and compared it with EBV-IM.
