Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how effective nutrition support teams (NST) are in preventing central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in healthcare facilities.
  • - Researchers analyzed CLABSI rates from 47 facilities between 2019 and 2021, noting significant differences before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, with lower rates found in facilities with NST support.
  • - Results showed that although CLABSI rates increased during the pandemic for both groups, the NST group consistently had lower infection rates, highlighting their effectiveness in infection prevention.

Article Synopsis
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) can be life-threatening, and this study aimed to identify factors contributing to mortality in these patients, with a focus on nutritional aspects.
  • The study analyzed data from 453 in-patients diagnosed with CRBSI across 33 hospitals between January 2019 and December 2021, utilizing logistic regression to determine mortality risk factors.
  • Key findings indicated that factors like Candida presence in blood cultures, earlier CRBSI onset after catheter insertion, concurrent infections, low serum albumin, and high C-reactive protein levels increased mortality risk, while using a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) decreased it.

Background: The impact of different stroke types on specific activities of daily living (ADL) is unclear.

Objective: To investigate how differences between intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and cerebral infarction (CI) affect improvement of ADL in patients with stroke within a hospital by focusing on the sub-items of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM).

Methods: Patients with first-stroke hemiplegia (n = 212) were divided into two groups: ICH (86 patients) and CI (126 patients).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impacts of dietary interventions on cancer survivors regarding their survival, health-related quality of life (QOL), and nutrition.
  • Eight randomized controlled trials were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in improving clinical measures and dietary habits among adult cancer survivors.
  • While some studies reported enhancements in QOL and dietary habits, the results indicated no positive effects for cancer survivors experiencing undernutrition, suggesting that more standardized and targeted research is needed.

Background: Drivers with dementia are at a higher risk of motor vehicle accidents. The characteristics of driving behaviour of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) have not been fully elucidated. We investigated driving ability and its relationship with cognitive function and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) morphometry indicators.

Practicing walking in a safety suspension device allows patients to move freely and without excessive reliance on a therapist, which requires correcting errors and may facilitate motor learning. This opens the possibility that patients with subacute stroke may improve their walking ability more rapidly. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that overground gait training in a safety suspension device will result in achieving faster supervision-level walking than gait training without the suspension device.

Objectives: Antiemetics have been widely recommended for treating opioid-induced nausea and vomiting (OINV). According to a previous study, the use of prophylactic prochlorperazine at the initiation of treatment with oral oxycodone was ineffective in preventing OINV. This study examined whether prochlorperazine injection prevents OINV and induces drowsiness in patients with end-stage cancer (a different patient population from the previous study).

Objective: During the mastication of solid food, the tongue pushes the bolus laterally to place it onto occlusal surfaces as the jaw is opened. This movement is referred to as tongue-pushing (TP). TP has an important role in efficient chewing, but its kinematic mechanisms remain unclear.

Aim: To compare the isolated and identified bacterial species colonizing on the genital skin between patients with and without incontinence-associated dermatitis.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 102 patients with stroke admitted to an acute hospital in Japan. Swabs were collected, and bacterial species found in swabs were isolated and identified using a selective agar medium and simple identification kits.

Objectives: Patients with cancer, especially those with lung cancer, are at high risk of developing thrombosis. Intralipos infusion 20% is contraindicated for thrombosis, and there is no consensus on whether it can be safely used in cases of advanced cancer. We conducted a retrospective observational study to elucidate the impact of fat emulsion administration on blood coagulation in patients with terminal lung cancer.

We aimed to investigate the association between the presence of cutaneous urease-producing bacteria and the development of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) using an original urea agar medium as a step toward developing advanced preventive measures. In previous clinical assessments, we developed an original urea agar medium to detect urease-producing bacteria via the medium's colour changes. In a cross-sectional study, specimens were collected via the swabbing technique at genital skin sites in 52 stroke patients hospitalised in a university hospital.

Objective: Tolvaptan, a vasopressin V receptor antagonist, is an oral diuretic. Patients with terminal cancer develop marked fluid retention, and oral diuretics other than tolvaptan have been used as treatments without clear therapeutic effects. Herein, we aimed to study the efficacy and safety of tolvaptan in patients with terminal cancer.

Background: There is an extensive library of language tests, each with excellent psychometric properties; however, many of the tests available take considerable administration time, possibly bearing psychological strain on patients. The Short and Tailored Evaluation of Language Ability (STELA) is a simplified, tablet-based language ability assessment system developed to address this issue, with a reduced number of items and automated testing process.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to assess the administration time, internal consistency, and validity of the STELA.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation has been used to assess plastic changes in the cortical motor representations of targeted muscles. The present study explored the optimal settings and stimulation intensity for simultaneous motor mapping of multiple upper-limb muscles across segments. In 15 healthy volunteers, we evaluated cortical representations simultaneously from one muscle in the shoulder, two in the upper arm, two in the forearm, and two intrinsic hand muscles, using five stimulation intensities, ranging from 40% to 100% of the maximum stimulator output.

Objectives: In stroke patients, the assessment of gait ability over time is important. For quantitative gait assessment using measuring devices, the walking speed condition for measurement is generally based on the patient's preferred walking speed or the maximum walking speed at the time of measurement. However, because walking speed often increases during the convalescent stage, understanding the effects of change in walking speed on gait when comparing the course of recovery is necessary.

Short-course remdesivir for healthcare-associated COVID-19: Case series from a non-acute care hospital.

J Infect Chemother

January 2023

Departments of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Fujita Health University School of Medicine, Toyoake, Aichi, Japan; Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Electronic address:

Healthcare-associated COVID-19 among vulnerable patients leads to disproportionate morbidity and mortality. Early pharmacologic intervention may reduce negative sequelae and improve survival in such settings. This study aimed to describe outcome of patients with healthcare-associated COVID-19 who received early short-course remdesivir therapy.

Department of Rehabilitation, Fujita Health University Nanakuri Memorial Hospital, 424-1, Oodoricho, Tsu, Mie 514-1295, Japan; Department of Rehabilitation Medicine II, School of Medicine, Fujita Health University Tsu, Mie, Japan.

Objectives: Falls can occur daily in stroke patients and appropriate independence assessments for fall prevention are required. Although previous studies evaluated the short physical performance battery (SPPB) in stroke patients, the relationship between SPPB and fall prediction and walking independence remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to verify whether SPPB is a predictor of walking independence.
